Mix & Match – An Eclectic Gallery Wall

July 31, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Mix & Match to create an epic gallery wall

Hey Guys!

I hope you’re not sick of hearing me talking about things related to my living room yet. Since revealing the “finished” room, A Boho Vintage Living Room, I’ve wanted to share every element that went into the space. One of the remaining pieces to chat about is the gallery wall. It’s the first gallery wall I’ve put together but I really love how it turned out. It’s more eclectic than I’d normally lean, but every piece that went into it makes me happy.

Mix & Match- A Guide to Eclectic Gallery Walls via A Designer At Home

Shop The “Wall”: Target Rope Wrapped Mirror West Elm Trio Of Shaped Mirrors Urban Outfitters Himo Art Wall Hanging Urban Outfitters Rope Disc Wall Hanging West Elm Set of 4 Mandala Prints West Elm Abstract Terrarium Print West Elm Watercolor Burst Urban Outfitters Dream Catcher West Elm Coordinating Frames Lochness Studios Palm Print Mod Cloth Himmeli Diamond Wall Art Minted Rainforest Print

Here are some key pieces that I personally feel makes for a visually interesting and naturally coordinates:

Some Order + Coordinating Colors + Handmade + “Real Art” + Natural Element + Dimension + Reflective Elements

Some Order: Sometimes the eyes need something “easy” to rest on and that’s easy when there’s “order.” Order can be the way elements are lined up or a coordinating set of frames. An example of this would be the peach painted frames lined up in a row in my own gallery wall.

Coordinating Colors: Just as with designing a space, you should choose a color scheme and stick to it. Think like you would with a space. You could do a bunch of neutrals or black and white with a pop of color or vice versa with a lot of color and pops of neutral. Look into color theory and trust your judgement. Your brain and eyes know what’s pleasing, and it’s most important that it makes you happy. My color scheme is peach/orange/magenta/gold/grey and it’s very colorful. I also really love the mostly neutral with pops of green and blue that I created in the pseudo gallery wall above.

Handmade: I have to encourage you to attempt to DIY an art piece. My handmade elements are most of my gallery wall, but himmeli is pretty easy to get the hang of, framing decorative paper in a painted frame is easy, and I’ve even shared here on the blog the easiest way to make a wall hanging. You can totally paint an abstract painting and throw it into a mix of thrifted and purchased prints and it will make an absolutely stunning gallery wall.

“Real” Art: “Real” Art is stuff like the prints you can get from Minted.com, Etsy shop owners, thrift stores and more. It’s really just an element that you did not make but that was made by someone else. I just think it’s a really great way to show appreciation for other’s work and it adds an element to a gallery wall that gives something more. My “real” art piece is a print from Lochness Studio on Etsy. It’s the flamingo. It’s a total pop against everything else going on but it’s interesting and in the right colors.

Natural Element: This one definitely should be interpreted to fit your style. I have a lot of natural elements going on, the agate slice and the natural fibers of the wall hanging are examples. Cotton rope from a wall hanging or rope wrapped mirrors also work great for this. Got a beach vibe? Try adding in a sea fan. This is a great element to get creative on and will definitely bring in an eclectic feel.

Dimension: Think outside the box and get 3 dimensional with your wall. Anything from clay sculpture to metal work to anything that pops out against the wall (faux taxidermy anyone?). You’ll be glad you took the plunge and gave it a chance. My favorite dimensional element is my pink vintage ukulele, it’s so unique and adorable.

Reflective Elements: I believe that mirrors are totally necessary in every room. They bounce light around and let you catch an alfalfa moment. But you can also do reflective elements with metallics and sparkle.

Every element should fit your style and tastes. I love my gallery wall and want you to love yours too. Definitely play with things and omit what just doesn’t work for you (but totally give it a chance, first!). I hope you’ve found these tips inspiring and useful and I hope you’ve learned something new today. I would love to check your gallery wall out if you’ve got one (leave me a link if you’ve got one in the comments) and if you don’t have one- what element do you love most in an eclectic gallery wall?

How I Made It: Black and White Planter

July 27, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Black and White Kilim Inspired Planter - the easiest boring planter upgrade ever!

Hey Guys!

I have a really easy how-to to share with you today. Sometimes that’s what we need though, amiright? Plants make wonderful decor but they need something to go in. And if you’re a plant junkie like I am, you know that planters can be an expensive item to add to your decor! Pick up one of those boring, basic, plastic planters though- because I’m going to show you have to dress it up and make it look fabulous!

Supplies:

  • Plain plastic planter
  • Electrical tape
  • Scissors

How I Made It:

black and white kilim inspired planter easy decor

The most important part to this simple DIY is cleaning the planter. Make sure all debris and dust is off the planter because you’ll see it trapped beneath the tape.

plain basic white planter from amazon

Then cut lots of short pieces of electrical tape. Between 1.5 inches and 2 inches is a good length to eyeball. I just did this by cutting one and sticking it atop the tape and just kept cutting along the bottom of each piece,, repeating until I had a thick stack to start applying.

cut strips of electrical tape the same size

Then, just apply them to the planter in a staggered/staircase pattern. The tape peels off and reapplies easily so you can readjust as needed to fit around the planter.

As is the case with any DIY, this can be super customized. Don’t like the look of black on white? Grab a yellow planter and use white electrical tape on top! Don’t like the plain color on color? Try a printed washi tape! Don’t care for the staggered design? Make any shape your heart desires!

I hope this “how to” was helpful and that you found it interesting. If you did, please give it a share! I’d love for you to share this idea with your friends!

Crushing On: Textiles

July 24, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey Guys!

Did anyone else cringe when History class brought up textile manufacturing? I didn’t know what textiles were and the only the I do remember from those lessons were how badly I couldn’t understand how History class was going to help me get ahead in life. Fast forward to present day and I adore the treasure of History and I swoon for swanky textiles.

Textiles either make or break a space. And I love to lay them on thick. Textiles are fabric. Who doesn’t love good fabric? From suzani to shibori and faux fur to embroidered. Textiles are a great way to add color, texture and mood to a space.

Here are my favorite uses of textiles from some of my favorite Home Tours.

The beautiful fabric adorning this wall is too cool, amiright? And I love the way the rug below picks up on those gorgeous saturated blues. This whole home tour is loaded with textiles. It’s definitely decor eye candy!

Linen + Small print pattern + kilim makes for quite the combination. It’s pretty soft and easy on the eyes but still loaded with different textures and visual interest. Tread carefully when perusing this home tour because the envy grows great with all the fabulous vintage pieces!

1. I love to hate how beautiful this rug is. 1. I love how all the textiles in the space coordinate. Blue and White, Blue and White, and Blue and White. It’s so fun and soothing all in one.

This home is such a good example of how to do boho with textiles. That rug, that sofa, those pillows, that dog’s face! Haha, just kidding. Totally love the dog but he’s not a textile 😉 With the right balance, though, mixing lots of different patterns through fabrics paints the perfect room.

You can get so much decorating “bang for your buck” by using lots of neutrals in different textures and propping up a few “star” pieces within it all. Who wouldn’t want to cozy up in this bed?!

And another All Star of a decorated space. You’ll spot several different textures, which I personally fan girl for, and beautiful deep jewel toned colors. Paired with that fabulous hammock in the background, that I couldn’t get out of my mind so bad I bought a fringed hammock for myself, and you have one beautifully styles space!

Boho Vintage LIving Room Source List

Hey There!

I’m so happy you’re here for my Boho Vintage Living Room‘s Source post. Granted, a lot of the pieces in the room are thrifted. But, I’ve had a lot of interest in many of the items that are actually store bought. I think it’s a perfect way to decorate a space because you get the unique look of not looking like your space jumped right out of Target (though that’s not bad either) and you still get to add in trendy items as they appear on the shelves. So let’s dive into all the things that you can buy from my Living Room if your heart so desires 😉

frames marbled paper and a flamingo! eclectic at it's best!

Many of the Art on the walls I’ve made. I’m still working on sharing the tutorials for those DIY’s here on the blog, so please do make sure you’re following along via email, bloglovin’, or you other favorite ways of following your favorite blogs so you can see the updates on those tutorials when they’re posted!

Flamingo Print– I adore this print. My friend Vanessa owns and operates the Etsy shop, Lochness Studio. You can now order instant downloads from her shop which I think is a really cool feature!

Ukulele– eBay. I can’t really say a whole lot about this. I had a craving for a cute pink ukulele one day and found one on eBay. I guess the lesson here is, if you want something, the internet has it.

Gold Mirror– I bought this mirror from One Kings Lane. Because the items on the OKL site change often, this mirror is no longer available. But, if you wanted to sign up, you can use my link for a $15 credit for purchases of $30 or more.  Or you can check out Target’s cute selection of mirrors. Because we never need another excuse to go to Target, amiright?

Baskets– All of the baskets in this room are from Target. The blue and pink rimmed ones are/were from the Threshold line and the golden/black and jute one that my mass cane hangs out in was from the Nate Berkus line.

3 Cube Wood Cubby– It’s actually a wine bottle holder from Target’s Threshold line. I think they’re phasing these out right now and there’s a few coupon codes showing for it, too. I like that it gives a bit more visual interest to my smaller items. But I’m sure it works well for wine, too.

Large faux teak Picture Frame– Also from Target. I don’t believe they have this frame anymore either. But I would definitely recommend perusing their clearance end caps whenever you’re there for really unique frames.

Himalayan Salt Lamp– My lamp was a gift to me from my family, but I have several in my Amazon “Save for later” section because I love mine and want one for every room of my house. You can check out the assortment Amazon has here.

Entering a casually boho eclectic decorated space the living room of a 1950's brick ranch

White Garden Stool– I picked mine up from Lowe’s because it’s metal, not ceramic (i.e. breakable by a toddle) and it was a really good deal!

Teal Rug– This rug is gorgeous. And it’s soft, easy to clean, and hasn’t stained once with my son’s several spills a day phase he’s going through. It’s Target :). You can buy it here– take advantage of sales and promo codes. I remember buying mine for $170.00 for the 7′ x 10′.

Candle Sconces– On either side of the TV. I found them on a Target clearance end cap after debating for a long time over buying between 2 other way more expensive ones. Definitely gotta peruse those endcaps!

gilded bamboo look acheived with spray paint and discarded bamboo

Gold Arch Lamp– The lamp was not gold when I bought it! It’s this lamp from Amazon and I coated it with grecian gold rub n buff.

Navy & Jute Floor Pouf– I picked up the floor pouf from Target. Their selection is massive, but it doesn’t look like there’s any of this particular style left.

Teal Planter– From Lowe’s. It’s a really pretty deep teal color.

Mongolian Fur Pillow– Burlington Coat Factory. They’ve got loads of super beautiful pillows and I never wouldn’t have know if it weren’t for Instagram (i ♥ Instagram!)

Soda Crate– Etsy.

Mexican Blanket– 7-11 convenience store. (no joke!)

Crushing On: Lush Boho Houseplants

July 17, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

crushing on lush boho houseplants in interiors inspiration

Hey There!

I am so excited to be chatting here today about what I’m crushing on. Houseplants have been a life long obsession of mine. It’s also been a life long quest of mine to keep them alive! While I still may not be a pro at keeping houseplants alive and thriving, I am at least mediocre now. Beautiful spaces featuring the use of lush houseplants inspires me to get better at caring for plants.

I find it especially interesting and charming when plants are in kitchens and bathrooms. Those spaces can feel cold and sterile, lacking the vibrancy that plants bring to a room. Plants add something special to an ambiance of a room. Personally, I don’t like to spend a whole lot of time in a kitchen. But homes featuring lots of plants in a kitchen draw me in and I actually want to be in those spaces. Plants are the friend that always listens.

The best way to get the most impact with houseplants is to cluster them. Especially for those of us who haven’t had the best of luck and are working with smaller plants, grouping them together makes them visually bigger. Bigger is better, right? Plus it’s just so boho chic, who can’t love that?

It also helps to have cute containers for them to live in. Terracotta is perfect in a lot of the spaces featured because it plays well with wood tones and vintage/boho decor. Planters really are as limited as your imagination though. If you’d like to see a post featuring unique plants, leave me a comment below letting me know and I will happily get that together.

Here are a couple planters on Amazon I’m crushing on:

If you’re struggling to keep houseplants alive, here are a few of my all time favorite, can’t kill plants: Pothos, Sansevieria, Peace Lilly. I can do a more in depth post on fabulously hard to kill house plants, too. Just let me know if you want to see that (really, just tell me what you want me to talk about, and if I have anything to say about it, I’ll get you a post STAT.).

That’s all for today internet! If you’re reading, leave me a comment! It helps so I know whether or not I’m talking to crickets! Stay Rad.

Used Living Room Furniture

July 13, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

how to score cheap and cute second hand furniture

We all know that used furniture is the cheapest way of furnishing a home. Free is actually cheapest, but there aren’t many of us that can say that all the pieces we’ve ever wanted have just fallen into our laps. So we’ll just go with second hand furniture being cheapest (for what we want). The smaller the budget, the harder it becomes to get our hands on pieces we covet, but I’m going to share a little bit with you today my process for getting my hands on used furniture, some things I’ve learned to expect, and what I’ve scored that’s second hand in my living room (and spoiler alert – It’s a lot!).

How I Score Cute and Cheap Furniture:

I set a budget, stick to the budget, search multiple sources and don’t get too picky. It can be easy to see a piece that we’ve been searching for but see it’s twice as much as what we know we should be paying for it. Not that it’s not worth twice as much, but that we have a limit to what we can afford and we need to remain realistic while looking at things we want. Keep looking or attempt to negotiate if you’re brave. And if they won’t come down, go back to looking.

I check out a few local thrift stores a few times a month, check in on the OfferUp app, and have alerts set up on Craigslist. That way I’ve covered more ground and have a better chance of finding what I want.

And then I try to be as broad as possible. If I’m looking for a mid century style dresser, I try to broaden my search to include things like “old” “vintage” and “wood.” People don’t know what they have more often that not. Those are the people you want to buy from. And if you’re looking for a particular style of mid century, you’re limiting yourself, so be prepared to wait.

What to Expect with Second Hand Furniture:

Sometimes thrifted furniture can have a smell. Most smells can come out though so I make sure it’s not coming from upholstery, it’s not due to it’s condition (bad smell from mold for example), and I have an idea of what I’m going to do to fix it before I buy it. Most pieces I’ve picked up smell like normal furniture after a wipe down. Others I’ve had to leave in the garage for a couple weeks but then it’s fine again.

Upholstery may need replacing or a professional cleaning. You’ll still score a fabulous piece for cheap, but bear in mind that this also comes out of your pocket so budget for it.

Spiderwebs are abundant. If you’re squeamish, try to find someone that would love to do you the favor of brushing them off for you in exchange for lemonade (or whatever, I love lemonade). But make sure there are no bug eggs because you don’t want to introduce critters to your precious home.

My Living Room’s Used Furniture:

My Sofa

have a seat! the puppy doesn't bite and I promise it's okay to move the pillows!

I found my sofa through a vague Craigslist ad. My sweet friend went with me and let me use her truck to pick it up. When we arrived at the address I was sure I’d arrived at the wrong place because it was a church! But it was the right place, and priced at $25!

My End Table

thrifted craigslist side table perfect toy storage with pretty brass details

The first piece I found through OfferUp was this end table. I love the brass detail and trim on the doors. That combined with a ton of storage within sold me. I paid $20, but it’s a solid piece with good detail so it’ll last a long time.

My Coffee Table

have a seat! the puppy doesn't bite and I promise it's okay to move the pillows!

This retro little table has such a fun story. I found it through Craigslist, as I do with most pieces. The seller wanted $20 and I was quite alright with that since I know there are loads of resalers in the area who would also snatch it up at that price but to resell. The lady and her husband were some of the nicest people I’ve met! She mentioned she had several other people contact her but followed through with us because we contacted first. Seriously, that never happens. And she sent me home with several of her mature houseplants!

My Arm Chair

Entering a casually boho eclectic decorated space the living room of a 1950's brick ranch

Everyone loves this piece. I love this piece. And for $50 it was one hell of a deal. The upholstery needs some TLC but I’m actually happy about that because I have a destructive little boy. Later in life I’ll have it reupholstered, but for now it’s stylish and in a condition that can take a few pen marks.

My Bar Cart

gold vintage bar cart full of lush plants the perfect way to use a bar cart with little kids around!

This was a mother’s day gift for me in 2014. The seller wouldn’t budge on price but it wasn’t a terrible deal at $120. The gold is in pretty good condition and I love it as a plant stand.

My Credenza/Media Console

vintage credenza gone media console looks so good with all those rescued brown glass bottles!

The second most expensive piece in our living room in this credenza. I found it through a Craigslist ad but it led me to a thrift store. It’s beautiful and it great condition. The caning inserts are all untouched and the wood has very few scratches. It has provided so much storage as the left 2 sides has drawers and the right 3 have a single shelf. This piece was $95.

My Wicker Chair

wicker low back peacock chair

I like chairs. But who doesn’t? Hashtags like #moschairjunkie and #chairfeaturefriday prove that! I snatched this chair up for $20. It needs minor cosmetic work but I am such a sucker for imperfection so I’ve left it.

My Wicker Plant Stand

rattan wicker foot stool used as a plant stand

For $10 this slightly saggy foot stool became a fabulous little plant stand. I love that it raises up my thrifted plant inside it’s thrifted planter enough to be a statement.

My Elephant Plant Stand

white elephant plant stand stacked lucite lamp, be still my heart!

I scored this white elephant plant stand through a Craigslist ad for a thrift store for $30. It was originally glazed ceramic with hand painted designs. I wanted white at the time so I painted it, but I may strip the spray paint off one of these days when I stop being lazy about it. My taste changed a bit but I still love it as is. The foot stool beside it was also scored through Craigslist, for $10.

bentwood rocker paired with mexican blanket serape. love the contrast!

And finally, this bentwood rocker came home with me because it was listed with a bentwood foot stool that I wanted but the seller wouldn’t sell them separately. So for $50, I’ve got both. I like the rocker but don’t love it so I’ll get around to cleaning it up for resale soon.

I hope you’ve found this post interesting and useful! What kinds of furniture have you scored thrifting? Are you shy from buying upholstered pieces or do you go for it?

If you have questions about second hand furniture, leave them below and I’ll answer them as best I can!

Give this post a share! Your friends will love it and it helps me out a lot!

a great overview for second hand furniture purchasers!
