Shower & Tub Surround Tile and Grout

December 1, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A Boho Globally Inspired bathroom renovation using patterned moroccan inspired tiles

Hey guys,

As I promised, I’m checking in with an update on our bathroom remodel. Things slowed down quite a bit with the Thanksgiving holiday but there’s still a bit of progress to share with you.

I had a few questions from you all about grout. Originally the plan was to use turquoise blue grout. And then my contractor used it as adhesive for the shower tiles. And then told me he couldn’t use it to grout the tiles because he needed unsanded grout for the measurement of gap between the tiles. How discouraging!

I was pretty bummed out that he used the grout as adhesive without speaking to us about it first. The cost difference between generic ol’ adhesive and the turquoise grout is hefty. And I have used it in a tiling project where the grout size was quite small (remember my tiled ottoman tops?). So the whole ordeal has been really frustrating.

With the use of the turquoise grout out the window because it’s a sanded grout, we went shopping at The Home Depot to check out their selection of grouts. We chose an inexpensive unsanded grout by Polyblend in the color “New Taupe.” It’s a very pretty color. Striking against the white. A very classy combination. Not exactly the vibe I was going for, but I think that it’s offset by the patterned tile insert quite nicely.

Speaking of the insert, I’ve had to put my foot down and demand that he use the turquoise grout here. I know it can be used in a smaller tile gap and I really wanted it used in the space. With only 1 tub left (out of the 8 I had), this is going to have to be the unexpected pop of fun I crave.

moroccan-inspired-tile-old-world-bronze-bathroom-fixtures

I don’t want to come off completely underwhelmed, ungrateful, or pissed off. I appreciate all the hard work my neighbor has done. And I’m not pissed off. Things didn’t go quite according to plan. While I would have preferred he discuss the use of the product in this way with us, he wouldn’t have used it to grout the whole shower surround anyways. And it really is beautiful how it’s turning out. I’m betting this color will be a whole lot easier to keep clean looking anyways so this could just be a blessing in disguise.

So that’s what we’re looking at for progress on the shower surround.

wood-look-floor-tile

The floors are really exciting. They’re actually going perfectly according to plan. We’re using the same Polyblend grout in “Tobacco.”  The floor tile is from Lowe’s and it’s GBI Tile & Stone Inc. Madeira Oak Ceramic Floor Tile. It’s a touch warmer than the picture online shows. We bought ours online and picked up in store.

*Lowe’s & The Home Depot are Ebates stores so you get cash back when you buy online and pick up in store 😉

So there’s a lot of really good things moving forward right now. With the holidays upon us, I’m not so much focused on getting projects done for the bathroom. Our contractor is doing what he needs to do on his end, but I won’t be picking back up on any projects until after the new year. I’ll still keep updating, but keep a look out for a few holiday themed posts. It’s the most magical time of year 🙂

Removing Sliding Doors from a Shower

November 24, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

How to remove sliding shower doors & why you really should!

Hey Guys!

Today I’m popping in with one of those nitty gritty posts that have a better looking after but it’s far from pretty but what I learned may help someone else so I’m sharing for the love of everyone being capable of doing things to their home to make it a space they want to be in. That was probably a run on sentence. If you have a sliding doors enclosing your bathtub and want to remove them, I’m going to walk you through how we removed ours (Unfortunately I can’t say for any certainty that mine were installed like yours and different models may have differences in the deconstruction process).

We have 1 single freaking bathroom in our home. We aimed to buy a house that we could afford in the event one of us lost our job and that meant making sacrifices like 2nd bathrooms and square footage. We hope to one day have the funds to add onto the house and in that addition a second bathroom, but for now we are renovating the existing bathroom to be our “dream on a budget bathroom.”

One of the first things we did, even before the full blown renovation, was remove the shower doors. They were obviously harboring mold and they’re a pain to keep clean. I prefer the ease of use and interchangeability of shower curtains. These doors had to come down. So I mentioned to my dad that I was removing them and was running into a few issues figuring out how they came apart and my dad is awesome so he came over to help out.

The doors were easy. Ours hung from wheels on a track from the top. So we just lifted those right off and hauled them off to live in our garage for a few years.

Then the top piece lifted right off the sides.

And this was where I was a bit stuck. The sides were screwed into the tile. But when I took the screws out, the sides didn’t budge. And I didn’t fully expect them to since I could see an adhesive oozed out from the sides in a few spots. So with the direction of my dad, we took putty knives and worked it behind the sides. And it was a simple matter of prying and working the putty knife further down the frame.

How to remove sliding shower doors without damaging tile

The pieces were not salvageable because they were quite flimsy and bent with the slightest tug against the wall.

Once the sides were off, we started to see just how much mold these doors were harboring. I cannot recommend sliding shower doors after seeing what was growing after living in the house for just 2 years (the bathroom was “remodeled” just before we moved in). We have a great exhaust fan and use it every time we shower.

How to remove sliding shower doors without damaging tile

And then it became abundantly clear what kind of situation we were living with. Things. Were. Gross.

I will forever be a fan of shower curtains.

So all in all, I would have to say you shouldn’t ever install them. And if you have them, grab a screwdriver and a putty knife and get that thing out.

Warning- this makes my stomach queasy-

So I hope you’ve found this post helpful. And if this is the first post of mine you’ve seen, please stick around and check some other things out. I’m normally not showing you gross pictures of mold! I prefer pretty things 😉

So guys, today is the day. It’s Calling It Home‘s One Room Challenge reveal day. And I have no finished bathroom to reveal. It would be un-human of me to claim this wasn’t some kind of learning experience. These things always are a learning experience. I’ve never lived through a bathroom renovation before.

I’ve never selected lighting and tile. I didn’t know there was a difference between a left and right hand tub (though it’s existence doesn’t boggle my mind in the least, it just wasn’t something I had ever thought about). I had good and bad craigslist encounters in this adventure, I had the chance to work with some awesome companies (MOEN, Jeffrey Court for Home Depot, STAINMASTER, LampsPlus, DecoART, Purdy, HomeRight and Minted), I’ve learned so much about a neighbor I barely greeted before. This whole experience has been phenomenal.

I did not finish my bathroom remodel in 6 weeks. The first 2 weeks were spent on the design, the second two weeks were spent sourcing most supplies and a contractor, and the past 2 weeks were spent on the actual work.

If I were to do this again, I would preplan some aspects and purely spend the 6 weeks on the actual labor.

So what did we get done?

The bathroom was completely gutted. A layer of the plywood floor was taken out to even up the floor with the hallways. The walls were removed down to the studs. The toilet, sink and tub were removed. We did have a lead test since our home was built 1954.

Then we had the walls insulated and drywalled. An electrician came in to move the wires for the vanity lights, fix up some of the mess left from a previous baseboard heater, and run a line for the hot water heater we’re putting in our pantry (I have an “interesting” post coming up on that!). The pipes for the tub had to be reworked to accommodate the new fixtures. The floors and shower surround have durock and our awesome contractor put in a nice big 2 level recessed nook for all our shampoos, conditioners, soaps, etc.

A couple nights ago we had to find 2×6 and 6×6 bullnose tile that matched the tub wall tile. Can I just sarcastically ask who’s bright idea it was to name a warm leaning white tile “snow?” They look beige against a true white tile. So we shelled out a couple hundred dollars from The Tile Shop to order matching bullnose tile. This combined with the tub fiasco has set us nearly a week behind schedule.

I bought a lot of pretty things for the space and I figured the next best thing to showing a finished space would be to show the unfinished space and a few pictures of all the pretty things that I picked up for the space. Here they go!

Ashville collection towel bars and toilet bar (the sink/tub fixtures are also Ashville but are already installed). Banbury sink faucet. Moen shower curtain rod and rings in old world bronze.

When Design Plans Change – Sink Faucet Dilemma

November 10, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey Guys!

Today I wanted to sit down and chat a little bit about one of the roadblocks we hit during this bathroom renovation. Everyone knows that taking on a remodel of any kind in a house that’s a bit older is nearly always going to lead to a surprise of some kind. Thankfully we’ve found no leaks, no lead, no structural issues, no bad wiring. None of the usual culprits at least. So basically we’ve been so blessed in this process. But one thing we did run into is something I’ve never seen brought up before and that’s why I felt like I had to chat about it.

Design Dilemma- how we handled out faucet design plans being foiled by SCALD GUARD

Older faucets don’t have scald guard.

My original design plan involved the use of oil rubbed bronze and brass/gold. One of the pieces I was excited to use in the space is the brass circlet toilet paper holder. It is a beautiful piece, but that wasn’t the only reason for my excitement. The octagonal base actually closely resembles the base of the shower/tub fixtures in our old bathroom. How cool, right?

36228591_027_b3 vintage-kohler-sink-faucet-tapered-base vintage-kohler-shower-faucet-base

I figured I’d pull out the ol’ Pinterest trick of spray painting the fixtures and call it a day.

Unfortunately, in one of the visits from potential contractors, it was pointed out to us that the fixtures in the bathroom were original to the build of the house. OK, who cares, was my initial reaction. And then they proceeded to explain what it is (regulates the water temperature so that it doesn’t get too hot, causes scalds or a burn) and I thought that sounded like something we really should have in a house with a 3 year old who likes to start his own baths.

I know it’s the right thing to do to replace the fixtures not only for my child’s safety, but for anyone else who may live in this house in the future.

And that’s when I started having fun looking at new fixtures for the bathroom. Luckily, I’ve had the awesome opportunity to work with Moen for this bathroom remodel. So we did not have to come out of pocket for the fixtures, but they are within the budget we initially set for them.

Bathroom fixtures can we an expense that hits hard, especially if you’ve never taken on a bathroom remodel before. We’re talking hundreds of dollars here. But the great thing about choosing fixtures is that they’re easy to take with you when you move. You see them every day so they provide function but also add to the feel of the space. I personally do feel like they’re worth investing some money into. Especially if you’ve already splurged in another area of the same space. Fancy tile with a basic towel rack? That tile won’t feel as fancy…

2b417185-e51b-4a63-9e20-83fce050040c_400 e041d029-2795-4ff7-87c2-b2ec2f8bdf74_400

The fixtures we chose to use in our space are the MOEN Banbury 4 in. centerset high arc sink faucet, and for the tub/shower we chose to use the Ashville 1-Handle Tub and Shower Faucet. Our toilet paper holder and towel rods are also from the Ashville collection, for reference. One thing I have to note here is that the finish appears to be oil rubbed bronze with gold/bronze peeking through. Those gold spots are actually quite copper. Which works fabulously with out oil rubbed bronze and copper metallics theme.

My home was built in 1954 which meant that we were on the teetering edge of possible problems. While we avoided all the well known problems, scald guard was something I’d never heard of. I hope this gives you helpful insight into the considerations that need to be accounted for in a bathroom remodel and that you’ve found this helpful!

Bathroom Vanity Lighting Options

November 3, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

bathroom vanity lighting ideas. Both splurge and Save options- but they all look so nice!

Hey Guys!

One thing I’ve gotten to do in this whole bathroom remodel that I haven’t gotten to do in any other space is choosing lighting! I’ve made overhead lights for two other rooms I’ve designed. And the living room didn’t have any hardwired lamps. In the bathroom, we are replacing the dated 80’s vanity lighting. I’ve seen fabulous makeovers for these exact lights, but I just didn’t want to mask a “problem” in this space. Choosing new sconces to flank the mirror were a given for us and our situation.

But, considering we’re totally human and we’re working within a very real and very tiny budget, I have a second wish list of lighting I’m considering. If you’re already following me on Facebook, you hopefully saw my call for your help in making a decision on our lighting last month. It was so helpful because it got me thinking about a lot of things I hadn’t considered, but it also made my decision harder because you guys had good arguments for lights I was thinking of pulling off the list.

Congress 13″ High Clear Glass Oil

Rubbed Bronze Wall Sconce $149

*Money Saving Alert: If you’re totally loving the Artcraft Legno Rustico Dark Pine Wall Sconce, the Quoizel Edison Western Bronze Wall Sconce is SO similar and half the price. Mount it onto a piece of wood stained in a similar tone and you’ve saved yourself dollar dollar bills, y’all.

There are a lot more Oil Rubbed Bronze options in the budget friendlier choices. I’m pretty much right on the line as far as which finish I love more. True Story: I actually had made a decision on the bathroom sconces. But when I went to put in the order they were discontinued! Why?! It’s actually the last lamp shown under the “totally reasonable pricing” lamps. I just had to have it in that brassy finish. It’s now only available in oil rubbed bronze and chrome. I just don’t completely love the lamp in those finishes. So the hunt continues…

Up to this point I’ve made little progress to show! Completing this task in a mere 6 weeks is looking unlikely. A disappointing craigslist exchange left us 2 days behind schedule with the new tub installation. But that was both a blessing and a curse. We’ve got a much nicer one that’s deeper now. It’s this one from Lowe’s if you’re interested in checking it out.

So far everything is coming together beautifully. At least everything looks very well coordinated and beautiful laying on the floor in the corner of my living room. My contractor is really wonderful and hard working so even if we miss the 6 weeks, it’ll be very soon after.

There are loads of showstopping pieces in the space, but I think a subtle and beautiful detail like lighting can really tie together lots of eye catching elements and help make them make sense. That’s what it’ll do for us in our space. Lighting can also be the show stopper. So if you’re working with a bland space that you’re wanting pretty a pretty instant upgrade in, check out lighting. It’s easy to swap lighting out and just skim above and you’ll see possibilities are endless.

I hope you’ve found this post helpful and interesting. If you did, please be sure to leave a comment and give it a share!

Demolition, Spray Paint, Decisions Made – Bathroom Remodel Progress

Global Craftsman Boho bathroom remodel demo progress updated design board, thrifted vanity and carefully sourced accessories

Hey Guys!
I’m checking in today to update you all on the progress of our bathroom remodel. There’s just two more weeks until the reveal and things are looking bleak. My bathroom is completely gutted!

If you’re just checking in with me, I’m sharing my adventure through a 6 week room design (actually a full blown renovation) as part of Calling It Home‘s One Room Challenge. I’m redesigning our bleh bathroom to a global and boho oasis with intentional craftsman touches. Today is week 4!

demo-demolition-bathroom-reno-renovation-progress

Today my contractor is putting in the new tub and will start reassembling the walls and insulation. Insulation was really important. I’m hypothyroid and I have arthritis so the cold is nearly intolerable. A good insulation is going in the wall to the outside and the wall between the bathroom and bedroom (simply for noise reduction).

This past weekend we scored a new vanity through Craigslist. It’s the Glacier Bay Artisan Vanity (the 36 inch wide one). It’s so much nicer than the one we were going to purchase (the one in between this one and the first one I told you about). I’m stoked to have drawers. And I only spent as much as I was going to be spending on the not as nice or big one- yay! I specifically switched gears to find one without a splash guard (I just learned what that was!) because of an ultra cool surprise I can’t wait to share. I’m painting the vanity blue or green this weekend.

When we arrived to the address, we found it was actually a small shop. He also had bathtubs so we purchased one then, too (and hubby’s truck was out of the shop just in time to pick it up yesterday!).

I started working on small projects a few weeks ago. The first one I’ve shared is the DIY leather tassels on a basket tutorial. It’s got video 🙂 Go check it out.

I’ve also started working on spray painting a few decorative pieces and the IKEA Ekby shelf brackets. There will not be any chrome or steel in this place. This is a cozy bathroom, not a sterile one.

I ended up sourcing out the creation of the shower curtain to a coworker. She actually knows how to sew (I don’t) and she’s nice and reasonably priced and she knows how to make soaps. She’s also making custom soap for me because she’s amazing.

Oh! And we picked up floor tile. It’s going to look so great with the tub surround tile we chose!

I think I’ve remembered to touch on everything. I think. There is a ton of other stuff going on behind the scenes right now (do you like giveaways? then you want to be here next week, there’s 2 of them!) but I think that’s the only relevant stuff going on with the bathroom.

I hope you’re all having an awesome day 🙂
