10 Places to Infuse Your Style in a Bathroom

January 3, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Renovation, redesigning, and redecorating the only bathroom in our home has taught me so much about what options I have in all those areas, as well as what I do and don’t like in a space that’s mine. Since adding personal style to a bathroom can daughniting in any budget. You may ask yourself questions like, “What are my options?” “Where should I start?” “What can I do and what can I buy?”

10 places to infuse your style in your bathrom

Never fear! Here are:

The 10 places I’ve found where you can infuse your style in your bathroom:

Wall Treatments

Your options are only as limited as your imagination with the things you can do to your bathroom walls. Shiplap, wallpaper, paint colors and stencils. There are products that make all of these options safe for bathroom use.

Paint

Looking beyond the walls, paint can make a cool impact in a bathroom in other ways, too. From spray painting accessories to painting a bathroom vanity, choose a color in a hue that expresses the vibe you want for the space.

Tile

While the line between “your style” and “good for resale” can be a thin and heartbreaking line to tread, it’s still a really great place to look into infusing your style into a space. Even the classic subway tile comes in a few variations that can add just enough interest to be more than basic.

Shower Curtain

Don’t be afraid to look beyond traditional shower curtains. Washable materials in a well ventilated space can be perfect for bringing the unique look your space deserves. From lace curtain panels to vintage fabric you’ve retrofitted, the shower curtain is one space you can make big, inexpensive impact.

Fixtures

Lighting, faucets, curtain rods, towel bars and toilet paper holders are available in so many finishes and styles nowadays. We chose to go with old world bronze fixtures from Moen in our bathroom to fit in line with the mediterranean vibes I wanted to infuse in the space. And sconces in an oil rubbed bronze with seeded glass from Lamps Plus. Whether you want cozy, vintage, spa-like or farmhouse, look into all the available options. While it may not be the cheapest change you can make, upgrading the fixtures changes the whole experience of the space.

Mirror

Get out of the “bath specific” mirror section and explore the styles of mirrors available in the home decor sections and online. Keep measurements on hand so you can be sure the proportion is right. If you don’t need, need, need a medicine cabinet, don’t go for the boring style of mirrors displayed for bathroom use. There are interesting shaped mirrors and mirrors with frames that will better suit your space. Working with what you’ve got and what you’ve got is one of the large slabs on mirror on the wall? Don’t fret! You’re in luck. The internet has so many DIY frame solutions for those mirrors you’ll wish you were mirror shopping instead šŸ˜‰

Towels

From fringe to embellishments to patterns and color, let your towels stand out or blend into the rest of the space. If you’re going for a calmer space, basic fluffy white or muted color towels can be the perfect touch. When going with a globally inspired space, look for patterns or styles that incorporate elements from the culture you’re emulating (or support small artisans by buying towels made by fair trade artisans in those places). Love eclectic and/or colorful spaces? Let the towels add a punch of interest to the space.

Rugs

Traditional bath rugs from the big box stores are out. Don’t use them. Check out retailers that sell merchandise in the style you gravitate towards and see what they offer. Or go with smaller area rugs. As long as your bathroom is well ventilated and you don’t get the rug unnecessarily soaked, area rugs work well in this space like they do anywhere else in the home.

Art

Yes, you totally should add art to your bathroom. Treat this space like any other space in your home. Thing about all the layers you can add. And how much art makes sense for the style you’re after. You can go with inexpensive prints from Etsy or custom framed art prints from minted. Either way, you’ll find an endless supply of options to enhance the design of the space.

Storage

Baskets, acrylic containers, wire baskets, wooden containers, metal bowls, toothbrush holders in every style, towel bars and makeshift towel storage, cabinets, shelves. And then the placements of all these things! If you’ve got to work with what you’ve got and can’t budget much money to adding “you” to the bathroom, the way you store your things is definitely the route to go. Look at bathrooms decorated the way you want your decorated and look at how the things are stored and displayed.

As always, I hope you’ve found this post helpful and interesting. Let’s discuss! What are the ways you’ve added your style to your bathroom? Or tell me some things you’ve seen done to a bathroom that you loved. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask!

Tons Of Storage In A Small Bathroom

August 26, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

When you’ve only got one bathroom in your house and closet space is slim to none, you’ve got to think creatively and maximize what you do with the space in that bathroom. I don’t have the smallest or biggest of bathrooms, but I have jam packed a ton of storage into the space. Today I want to share all of those bathroom storage solutions because even if you can’t make them all work, there’s ideas here that will work for any space.

  1. Build A Recessed Shelf
    • I don’t find organizers that hang over the showerhead or use tension to hang in the corner of the rub to be very effective. They’re normally not stable enough nor are they ever big enough to hold everything.
    • If you can invest to DIY or have someone come in and put a recessed shelf into your shower area, you’ll love it. Our is especially huge but even a small one (or a series of small ones will go a long way in making the space function better.
  2. Double Shower Curtain Rod
    • Don’t waste wall space on towels. A simple and relatively cheap space saver is to change out your shower curtain rod for a double shower curtain rod. Instant double duty. And then while you’re at it, treat yo self to some cute towels.
  3. Ā Install A Cabinet Over The Toilet
    • If your linen closet is better suited to storing things you normally keep in there. Like first aid kits, medicines (that aren’t susceptible to moisture), towels, personal care products and anything else you need to store in there.
    • Also allows you to stock up on things like toilet paper because you’ve got a place to put the extras.
  4. Add A Freestanding Cabinet
    • If you’re really struggling with space, you likely don’t have room for this tip, but I love this! I can basically become a hoarder now that I’ve put this cabinet in my bathroom. Even rarely used bathroom cleaning products and their back ups get stored in here because I have room for everything else.
  5. Choose A Sink With Storage
    • When choosing between sinks for a bathroom remodel, don’t torture yourself with a pedestal sink (I guess unless you’re about to implement the other 7 ideas here). Bathroom vanities have come a long was from the free standing kitchen cabinet look and there are plenty attractive ones that take up minimal floor space.
  6. Shelf Over The Door
    • Steal a little square footage above the door. Extra toilet paper rolls, a basket of makeup, folded towels all display nicely in this space since it’s not a main space the eye rests in a bathroom.
  7. Utilize Wall Space
    • You can use wall space for shelves to display pretties and for all the daily essential.
  8. Baskets & Containers
    • Hang a basket from the ceiling a la macrame planter style for boho storage that takes up little space.
    • Put a basket on the floor for toilet paper/towels/laundry.
    • For storing small items (makeup, travel sized items, toothbrushes, deoderant)
    • Use a basket on the wall for a textural shelf

Bathroom Color Scheme

August 15, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

As I’m wrapping up the last few details of the bathroom remodel, I wanted to pop in and share with you an abstract view of the color scheme for the bathroom. Do you ever scroll pinterest and see those images where they’ve extracted colors from the image to make a color scheme? I wanted to do something similar to that. Just in case you like the overall look and feel of the space but aren’t actually looking to translate the ideas to a bathroom, I think this will help.

Get The Look Bohemian Bathroom Teals And Reds And Plants For Any Room

Vanity Paint Color:Ā Teal MotifĀ MQ6-35

Floor Tile: GBI Tile Madeira Oak

Rug: Persian Runner

Tile: Archivo Fleur De Lis from Merola

So, how would I translate this to any other room?

First, go to your local nursery and pick up a couple of pothos. They truly are my favorite plant and I highly recommend them for anyone wanting to get into plants.

Then you’ve got options. You could tile the space if it makes sense in the same or a similar tile. If you have wood, you can strip it and stain it a similar stain. On a budget or renting? Skip worrying about the floor and go with a huge jute rug.

A big key element of the space is the rug. With the deep blue and dark red, it adds depth and sophistication. The red ties into the copper accents in the space, too. Which helps bring the space together. My favorite resource for vintage rugs like these is ecarpetgallery on either their website or eBay.

The patterned tile is great for accents. Like a fireplace, a feature above an oven, backsplash, etc. But if you’re working in a space that doesn’t need tile, pick up a fleur de lis fabric and upholster a chair, seat cushion or ottoman. Or a stencil and stencil a wall or piece of furniture (heck, even the floor or ceiling).

The mixture of rich blues with patterns are key to the overall vibe of the space. The neutrals for the space are white, cool grey and cool brown. The pops are teal and red. The accents are light blue and a natural wood tone. And the metals for the space are oil rubbed bronze and copper. With so many strong patterns and colors, the lace curtains are a nice grounding feminine element.

As always, I hope this helps you design a space you love. If you have any specific questions, please feel welcome to leave them in the comments and I’ll try my best. Also, let me know what room under $1,000 you want to see next!

All About The Floors Of Our Bathroom

July 30, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

After ditching the too big bathroom vanity, the next plan I had for our bohemian bathroom remodel was the removal of the floors. The 98 cents a square foot tile had to go. They just look awful. I wish builders and flippers would get away from using it. So bad so thatĀ I would’ve preferred starting out with old linoleum than this tile. Call me crazy but I actually like the look of that stuff.

Taking on a bathroom renovation budget is really scary. We’re not DIYers and we don’t have any skills. So the cost for us to remodel the bathroom was much higher than a lot of bathroom renovations on other blogs I’ve read. It felt like the first place in our home that really needed a makeover though. Costs ended up quite a bit more than we initially contracted out for because every layer that came down led to needingĀ the next layer pulled down.

Vintage Bohemian Bathroom Remodel

Because I was already nervous about the cost, I also wanted to make sure I was mild in my choices. I was originally planning for and in love with cement encaustic tile for the floor and a bright turquoise hexagon wall tile. But I worried that it would be too out there for a buyer if we needed to sell in the next 5 years. We certainly wouldn’t be able to afford retilingĀ it just to sell the house.

So I went a hunt for a tile that was white, but still in a shape that echoed the same interesting pattern as the encaustic tile I adored. I ended up with the Jeffrey Court Marrakech tile. It’s a white tile. So I did the white tile with white walls (this may change soon…).

Middle Eastern and Mediterranean inspired vintage bohemian bathroom remodel

Some preliminary ideas for the floors were marble hexagon or slate or a light colored polished stone. But those fell off the table really soon in the planning stages.

For the floors, I wanted something that wouldn’t contrast too much with the wood flooring of the hallways. Well… wouldn’t you know, there’s this relatively new and cool tile that looks like wood. And it’s pretty cheap!

Inexpensive wood look tile with vintage rug

Initially I started looking for a tile that matched the warm pine color. But I hate the finish of these floors and dream of one day replacing them or settling for restaining them. In the end it wouldn’t match so I change my focus for a tile that is similar in color to what I plan for the hardwood’s future. I shared about this floor choosing process last fall here.

So they’ve been installed for about 8 months now and I really love them. They’re quite beautiful and they were inexpensive. That really helped balance the already over the top budget for the space. Have I mentioned how much I budgeted? Gulp. Now, mind you, this includes the relocating of the hot water heater and the new unit- $12,000. But it really did help to go high/low on the space. I digress… I’ll chat all about that another day.

Vintage Bohemian Bathroom: All about the floor choices

So now we’ve got these sweet wood look tiles on the floor. But like most bohemians, I don’t like bare floors. I like rugs. Lots of them.

I tried using grey and black geometric rugs that I picked up last year on clearance at target. I didn’t like it. Then I tried the blue ones I had picked up last summer. But it was too much blue. And then when playing some musical rugs, I pulled this one out of the bedroom.

Vintage middle eastern rug with maroon and navy: a vintage bohemian bathroom

I like it a lot. I bought it for a great deal through ecarpetgallery on eBay (they also have a website you can shop from). I’ve now bought 3 rugs through them and they’re all really lovely. They don’t know I’m writing this, but if they ever did want to collaborate, I’d love to work with them.

Some people may worry about it getting wet. It’s small enough to where I can roll it and throw it in my washer. And it’s heavy enough to where I can vacuum it frequently. So I don’t think I’m going to have much of an issue with mold/mildew.

Maroon and navy runner rug with lace curtains and teal bathroom vanity

When looking all together, you can probably see why I may want to paint the walls. I feel like they need a dark color as heavy as the floor is in the space. But I love the copper stencil border and if I take on painting the walls, I’ll want to redo that too. Who knows if I’ll ever make the time to do all that though.

I don’t know how much of any of this is all that helpful. If you’re taking on a bathroom renovation yourself, I would definitely give the wood look tile a consideration. They’re much easier to DIY, too if you wanted to try and go that route. And weigh in on the whole painted wall dilemma I’m having in the comments below. I’d love to pick your brain!

Details On Our Bathroom Lighting

July 16, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

lampsplus lighting collab disclosure

I don’t remember dedicating a whole lot of time chatting about our bathroom lighting situation so today I’m going to make sure I’ve covered all my bases. A lot of designers like to make a statement with their lighting choices. And while I may be the person who chose to stick a sputnik in a small hallway, I actually prefer to choose lighting that understated but still pretty. Because I like to have a lot going on in a space, I like to leave visual space for the eye to wander on all the pieces I’ve painstakingly pulled together.

So in the bathroom, that’s just what I did. I chose lighting that was pretty, affordable and that would blend in with the space. Because after spending $300 on the mirror, I wanted to ensure it got the spotlight that budget deserved.

Processed with VSCO

Seeded glass, old world bronze sconce in bathroom

When I was debating which lighting to put into this space, I was torn between using a bronze finish and an oil rubbed bronze finish. In the end, they both would have worked beautifully in the space, but I went with the oil rubbed bronze because the mirror is gold. And I didn’t want too much gold on gold. In retrospect, if the light I wanted was available in gold, I probably would have preferred that at this point. Not that I don’t love the current choices, I just theorize the lighter color may have looked slightly better.

So, which sconce did I choose?

Kichler Braelyn 9 1/2″ High Olde Bronze Wall Sconce

There is one on either side of the mirror.

And why?

I’m a fan of things that hang and/or have the appearance of hanging. I don’t know the specific reasoning behind it, but I gravitate towards it. I also really like the look of the seeded glass. I feel like these particular lights have both a vintage and modern feel to them.

They’re also not very big. At 9 and a half inches tall, they don’t overwhelm the space.

I did end up using LED bulbs instead of the edison bulbs they came with because the edison bulbs are very yellow and I couldn’t find any that weren’t yellow. Since I do my makeup at this mirror frequently, I needed something that didn’t alter the colors on my face (that foundation match struggle is real).

Is there any other lighting in the space?

Yes. We decided to keep the ceiling light/fan combo to help keep the space within budget. It works perfectly. And it wasn’t within our budget to have our contractor install a new one. Installing lighting I’m comfortable with, but the fan part took this out of my comfort zone.

Between the sconces, ceiling light and the bright window, we have plenty of lighting in this space. If the time ever comes to add an additional bathroom to the house, I wouldn’t hesitate the consider these lights or similar for that space.

Built In Recessed Shower Shelf

July 12, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A white and blue bathroom with global influence and bohemian style

I have a random post for you today. I haven’t talked about our bathroom remodel in forever. There were still so many things I wanted to chat about the last time we left off on the space so I’m going to just dive into those topics these next couple of weeks while I’m in between other projects. Today, let’s start with theĀ Recessed Shower Shelf.

The Backstory Of TheĀ Built In Recessed Shower Shelf

It was really important for me that we jam pack this bathroom full of more storage than we could ever possibly need. I’m a recovering product hoarder. At least, I’m on the tail end of recovery. I still have more than 1 set of every personal care item, but it’s better than it used to be. I digress. I wanted to make sure there was room for extras should I want to take the linen closet to use as something else or if I buy a larger bulk package than usual, it would easily fit in the logical storage space (mine end up in the garage a lot :/)

So one of the many solutions I’ll have to share with you if the recessed shower shelf. In the design for the space, I requested our contractor make room for a built in shelf in the wall between the toilet and tub. He pointed out that we’d get a much deeper shelf if we went into the wall on the side of the tub. It’s a thicker wall separating the bathroom from the kitchen pantry.

during-a-bathroom-bath-remodel-renovation-built-in-tiled-shower-shelves

So we went with the right side of the wall to keep it out of the spray path of the shower head. He surprised me and told us that he’d be able to make it approximately 32 inches wide because he could take out one of the studs since it isn’t a load bearing wall. And just because I’m a little extra sometimes, I went with 2 shelves. The taller shelf is good for shampoo bottles. The bottom shelf is good for bars of soap and razors.

About The Grout:

I think in the near future I’m going to change the grey grout color. There’s some imperfections in the Jeffrey Court tile placement and the darker color grout amplifies them. I’m thinking either the same blue grout as the shelf, White/very light grey or a matching tan grout as the brown in the tile. I imagine the tan would be just as bad as the grey at showing imperfections with the placement of tile. And I did really enjoy working with the GlamourĀ grout from STAINMASTER. It was so easy to use that even it may justify removing all the existing grout. If I went white I could probably just use a grout colorant. And another worry is that it may then make the color in the alcove look out of place :/

About The Tile:

The main tile for the surround is the Jeffrey Court Marrakech tile. I freaking love this tile. It’s white to keep things airy, but the shape is the strong nod to moroccan that I wanted for the space. Unfortunately my contractor said that this tile would be very difficult to use in the alcove. So Ā I chose to use Archivo Fleur De Lis from Merola Tile. I absolutely love this tile. But because of a mix up with my contractor, we only had enough blue grout left to do the shelf. And I don’t think it looks good because the grey grout clashes with the brown in these tiles. The brown is much more intense than what it looks like in the picture online and it wasn’t available in store.

Earth, animal and skin friendly bath products

Functionality:

Despite that, I have really loved this decision. It’s been functioning wonderfully for us. I like that my child can’t waste my products when I’m not looking, I like not having gross tub corners when I go to take a bath, I like looking at it, I like being able to space out my products.

Anyways, the recessed shelf has been wonderful to have and look at. I really enjoy the tile we chose and the decision to go big has been so helpful. I wish I had been able to see some of it get put together so I could give you an idea of the process, but I was working a lot at the job I recently quit at the time. I think it’s also unique that we did it in the side wall. At the time when I was looking up ideas for the bathroom, all the alcoves were in the wall with the plumbing of the wall at the other end of the tub. SoĀ here’s another idea for you if it’s something you’ve considered!
