Hallway Decorating: New Year New Room Refresh

January 12, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hallway Decorating: Vintage Bohemian Hallway Design- vintage and rustic elements create a cozy path to other rooms of the house

Hey guys! It’s 2016 and it feels like a good time to give new life to a new project, amiright? I’ve been working on the bathroom for ages now and I had to take a little bit of a break. So when my friend Stephanie from Casa Watkins asked if I’d be interested in joining in on a challenge- New Year New Room Refresh I was happy to accept. The space I chose to refresh is not a room per say, but rather the space leading to lots of spaces- The Hallway. Because hallway decorating is totally a thing, right?

We have one long narrow hallway to leads to a couple closets, the only bathroom in the house and all the bedrooms. There’s 1 light fixture that doesn’t provide much light for the space and no natural light, even with the doors open because we have awnings that deflect a lot of natural sunlight (project for the spring, maybe?)

Why make pretty spaces if I don’t like heading to those spaces, I thought to myself. So that’s the space I’ve narrowed in on.

The main challenges of the space that I plan on addressing:

  • Lack of Light
  • Lack of Plants
  • Lack of Color
  • No Rug- hard and cold floors are not cozy
  • Ugly brass doorknobs
  • Storage (there’s never enough!)
  • Eyesores On The Walls

Hallway Decorating Thoughts:

boob light in a dark hallway

The light should be pretty easy. It’s a frosted boob light now so there’s plenty of room to improve it. I already cheated and painted the walls (see which tools made the job easier here!) a bright white which does a lot for a space without natural light.

I can’t put real plants in here unless I want to remember to rotate them through spaces with real sunlight. But, I do think I have an interesting idea to bring plants in without bringing plants in. Plants are pretty much a top 5 necessity for decorating with me, which you could probably tell.

long hallway decorating makeover

I like color and I feel like that it brings life and warmth to a space. So artwork and a colorful rug is a must. I’ll see if I can work up anything else, but for now I’m relying heavily on great artwork and a great vintage rug.

No rug should be easy. As I mentioned yesterday, I did some rug shopping recently!
ugly hallway full of polished brass door knobs

It seems the Pinterest trick of spray painting door knobs holds up well so I’ll probably do that instead of forking out those kinds of dollars for all new hardware. Next trip to Home Depot will involve some Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint for sure.

There’s 3 closets in this hallways but I want to add a small chest or cabinet at the end of the hallway to make the space feel more like a room and for additional space to store linens.thermostats don't look cute on the wall

And then there’s the eyesores on the wall. The thermostat and the other dials and knobs and outlets on the walls are ugly. I’ll have to get creative but I want them hidden. With all the other pretty visions floating around in my head, I’ve got to figure something out to conceal these. Otherwise they’ll be a huge buzzkill in the overall design. Any ideas?

I’d also like to replace the doors and trim, but that’s not in the plan for the refresh since that would take too much time for a 3 week challenge! And too much money, just being real here. We replaced the trim in the bathroom so eventually we’ll bring the other spaces together but for now this area is simply getting a facelift.

Make sure you’re following along for all the updates and ideas and please check out my friends who are also participating in the challenge:

Boho Bath and Kitchen Buys

January 11, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

I can’t believe we’re already nearly halfway through January. I ended up doing a lot of selfish shopping for myself around the holidays and I thought I’d share the boho bath and kitchen purchases with you. Because you guys get me, I’m sure you’ll totally get the excitement behind these buys. And I think they kind of give a small glimpse into where things are going these next few months (I gave a vague forecast in this post). And, of course, they’ve got a boho style I think you’ll enjoy.

Vintage Family Jewels

January 7, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

thrift score thursday11

It feels a bit strange to sit down and write a #thriftscorethursday post! We’ve taken the last 2 weeks off to enjoy The Holidays and it was so nice to decompress and focus on other things. But I’ve missed chatting thrifty finds so I’m excited to jump back into the swing of things and share what a recent score of mine as well as loads of great thrifting inspiration from the #thriftscorethursday feed on Instagram. Yay!

First I’ll get my find out of the way since I’ve already sortof spilled the beans on it anyways.

wpid-2016-01-06-06.39.26-1.jpg.jpegA few weeks back my grandmother gave my mom a large jewelry box full of vintage jewels from my grandma’s husband’s mom. They’re getting to be pretty old and maintain 3 properties so they’ve slowly been passing along duplicate items or things they just don’t need hanging around anymore.

My mom knows I just live for this stuff so when I came over for a visit, she told me to take first grabs on anything I liked. There were tons of things to pick through, and my OCD-like self had to sort and bag everything, but I also found a lot of stuff that I wanted to keep.

There’s the necklaces that I think suit my style and look perfectly. And the necklace charms only need the right chain to be chic. And the watch my dad had snuck off and gave to me later. I love it! It doesn’t photograph well since it needs some repairs- one day though!

And then there’s the lot of brooches I scored. Many have matching earring, too! I have a fun idea for these in the
future (just too busy with other things right now), so for now they’re sitting in bas so they don’t get damaged.wpid-2016-01-06-06.40.59-1.jpg.jpeg

I didn’t want to take anything that was broken because I’m notorious for holding onto broken things for far too long. I just end up tossing it years later.

But there were a couple pieces with really interesting detail. I just couldn’t pass them up and risk them getting tossed aside.

Pretty cool, right? It’s the second time I’ve inherited jewels from a deceased family member and it’s still such a special moment.

If I can find a fashionable way to share styled pics with them, I’ll post them to Instagram @adesignerathome

And now for the heaps of jealousy inducing thrift scores. You may want to skip these if you envy easily 😉

@mariaski63 Lord of the Rings. The background for these ? brass napkin rings I scored at an estate sale, is from a book I also thrifted, "The World We Live In" (Editors of LIFE magazine & Lincoln Barnett, 1955). It is filled with various stunning illustrations & photography. Here's more on this photo..."Uplifted land, a fold of layered rock raised by subterranean pressure, created Sheep Mountain on Wyoming's Bug Horn River. Millions of years ago the once-level sediments of an ancient sea bed were arched up into a massive dome far greater than the present mountain. Assailed by frost, wind and rain, it too was worn away. But its inner spine and a rampart of concentric hogback ridges remain as monuments to the ceaseless conflict between earth-shaping forces." #brass #napkinrings #brassnapkinrings ##vintage #tablesetting #tableware #placesetting #brassaddict #brassforeva #brassisback #brassisbadass #estatesalefinds #thrifter #thrifted #thriftstorefind #thriftscore #thriftscorethursday #naturephotography #lifemagazine #theworldwelivein #1955 #sheepmountain #bighornriver #wyoming

@vwbuggythrifter Rain keeps the thrifters away ... but not this girl. Rainy winter nights are perfect for having the whole store to yourself. Picked some ginger jars for $5.99 and $3.49 both made in Japan. Funny story my mom collected Chinoiserie as a kid as I thought it was hideous and HATED dusting it all. In fact mom still has some pieces in her garage...which I need to raid soon. And here I am 20 years later buying it all up in thrifts. #becomingmymother #scarystory #thriftscorethursday #salvationarmyfinds #thiftedhomedecor #chinoiserie #gingerjars

Which Painting Tools Do I Need?

January 5, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

which paint tool do i really need an arthritic who likes to paint walls has found tools that make the job better and easier

If you asked me this same question a year ago, I would tell you that you want to spend little money. I used and recommended the dollar store for painting supplies. But the more I’ve painted (and I’ve painted entirely too many walls for such a tiny house), the more I’ve started to wonder if there really is a difference between the more expensive stuff and the cheap stuff. I was sure their was some quality differences. But I’m honestly pretty terrible about taking care of paint brushes, which is why I thought it was a better investment just to buy the cheap ones since I’d likely let it dry out anyways. I’m here today to wave my white flag and tell you that I’ve experienced a difference in the quality of paint application, not just in the construction of the brush, but the paint going onto the walls and trim look better.

I found myself curious a while back and bought a Purdy brush on the recommendation of Mandi from Vintage Revivals. She wasn’t the only one I’d read that said that the tools matter, but I trust her (and adore her) so on a whim I picked one up. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the brush. I’ve been getting less streaks in my paint and a more even application. Bristles are not longer strewn throughout my paint job. (the one I bought is the Purdy 2 inch XL angled sash brush)

what will make the job of painting better and easier

What Tools Make Painting Better & Easier?

So when Purdy reached out to see if I would be interested in trying out and reviewing some of their products, I happily jumped at the opportunity. I picked out a few products I knew I would be needed, originally for the bathroom remodel (my contractor ended up using his own stuff- more about that story in a second) but I ended up using them in a space I’ll be chatting about next week- the hallway. And I’ve started using them in the dining room (I’m not sure I’ll ever share the before photos, it’s a hot mess).

As you can probably guess, I’m thoroughly impressed. One of many drawbacks of the dollar store roller frames is that they’re not made to hold the weight of a paint soaked roller. So they literally slip off mid painting. They also don’t distribute the pressure equally across the roller so there’s heavier paint application on half the roller’s trail. These problems are amplified now that I’ve experienced a roller frame that does equally distribute pressure and holds the roller in place. It’s easier and it saved me time from cleaning up and readjusting- it’s the little things.

We have a very long hallway with lots of doorways so it’s a genuine pain in the butt getting around it all. I have arthritis in my knees and it’s just plain painful to go up and down a ladder constantly down the space. The power lock professional grade extension pole has been a blessing. I worried at first that this wouldn’t work out so great because I imagined the roller slipping off the frame from far above my head, but because it doesn’t slip off, it made the job relatively pain free. The pole also wasn’t too heavy so it didn’t make me lose my balance.

The white dove roller was also pleasing to use. It held a good amount of paint without getting drippy or too heavy. I didn’t experience any little hairs in the paint either. Which brings me back to my contractor story. My contractor used his own supplies. And there are micro hairs all over the walls. It’s driving me nuts. I figure what I’ll have to do is sand them all flat and repaint the walls with my Purdy tools. It’s pretty irritating, but at least I know of better now.

The final item I used, and I save it for last because it made the perfect finishing touch on the space, is the Nylox glide 2 inch angled brush. Unfortunately the last time I painted a room, it was late at night and I fell asleep with paint on my Purdy brush. They both perform well and I like them both equally. The XL is approved for exterior and oil based paints whereas the Nylox is not, so that is worth noting in shopping Purdy products.

Products Used:

  • 2″ Nylox™ Glide™ Paint Brush
  • 2″ Angled Sash Brush
  • White Dove Rollers
  • Revolution Frame
  • POWER LOCK™ Professional Grade Extension Pole

Have you ever used a Purdy product before? What do you paint with? Have you found it matters or is it all basically the same for you? I’m grateful Purdy reached out with this offer because it’s taken a bit of the sting out of my own painting so if you’re looking at paint products, I have to recommend you give them a go.

New Year: Plans for 2016

January 4, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey guys! We haven’t chatted in 2 weeks and I miss being here quite a lot!

Since this is my first post of 2016, I wanted to give you an idea of what I have planned for myself, life and this blog this year.

I figured the best start to this is my “focus word.” If you’ve read blogs for a while, you’ve probably seen them release a focus word at the beginning of the year. And it’s the “word of the year” for them. I thought I’d take a go at that this year and share my own:

2016 word of the year

Contentment

Not to be confused with complacency. I want to be content with where I’m at in life.

  • Content with my weight, but still continue to make strides in making a difference with it.
  • Content with the home I live in, because I’ve witnessed much worse. I crave character, but this is a solid house that keeps us sheltered with more space than we could ever need. I’m ready to stop dreaming of other houses and focus on making the one we have the most beautiful and comfortable one it could ever be.
  • Content with my employment. I’ve longed to leave my job for years now. I haven’t been able to because of finances. This is where I am, it pays our bills, we are debt free because of this job and God has always made sure I’ve had it when we’ve needed it. Which means I probably need it right now, so I’m going to trust his plan and keep chugging along.
  • Content with this blog. This blog is supposed to be a happy place, not a place of frustration. I had the opportunity to work with so many of the brands I wanted to work with this past year. I made it into several online publications that made my mom proud. I want to continue creating content here that I enjoy and I hope the people who want to see it, do see it and enjoy it.

2016 Word Of The Year Contentment

I want to be content.

Some things I want to do for myself this year is to slow down and refocus on things that are important to me.

This past year I made buying choices that I’m not proud of. I want to live a greener life, which includes beauty, personal care, household care and more. I’m going back to that value and am replacing all of the chemical laden products (and products that are tested on animals) with cruelty free, better for the environment and better for me options.

I’ve had a lot of health problems come up the past few years. I’m only 25 years old. I’ve read in numerous places that the chemicals in products around us can negatively affect our bodies. And it makes sense to me. I want to get better, feel better and do better.

I have a lot of projects and materials for projects that have been sitting around collecting dust for the longest time. I’ve started working on a purge of sorts to get rid of the materials for items I’m no longer interested in cmpleting, finish projects I think someone else might like, and pare down the supplies I have to things I will use soon with a clear vision of what I’m doing with it.

The spaces I plan on tackling this year and will be sharing on le blog this year are the kitchen (a facelift, it’s not a bad space at all), the dining room (the space really needs paint and a few pieces of furniture), and the bedrooms (one has been an “office” and it’s just an excuse to hoard stuff so it’s got to go). I’d also love to do a bit more sprucing up outside the house with the exterior and landscaping, but that may have to wait until the following year.

There won’t be a whole lot changing as far as content. Still have lots of remodeling stories coming, tutorials for DIY projects, thrifted treasures, home advice, interior design and the like. I may be posting a bit less especially as the weather turns colder (I have arthritis and have trouble getting about to do projects when it gets cold). But you can expect the same me, same blog, just less stress, more happiness and contentment.

About Econet- And How To Use It

January 1, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

how to control your hot water temperature and modes from your smartphone- econet

Hey Guys!

I actually meant to have this post up earlier this week but there was the camera fiasco (the quality of pictures from my DSLR was consistently going downhill and I’d had enough). I now have a new one thankfully so I hope to have more posts up here soon. Today I’m checking into chat about my Rheem Econet as part of the informative series Rheem and I are bringing you.

I have to be honest, it took me an embarrassingly long time to get mine set up. I was so excited to have hot water in the house that I wasn’t concerned with getting the WiFi portion set up. I did finally take a break from hot showers earlier in the month to get it set up though and it’s actually pretty cool!

The set up was simpler than I had anticipated, but I’ll share some screenshots to give you an idea of what I did in case you’re considering getting one for yourself.

The first two are my WiFi networks, the third is the EcoNet.

So all of that was pretty quick and painless. I was happy to see I didn’t have to divulge too much information while still having control over how I’m contacted in the event of a problem. When my unit was first installed, it was automatically set to Energy Saver. Which is fine by me. It’s the setting I would have chosen but it’s not hard to change between Energy Saver and Performance.

Screenshot_2016-01-31-10-31-34

This whole journey was for us to be more eco friendly and to save on our utilities, but if you’re in need of pumping out top notch hot water heater activity the Performance mode should do that. For reference, I figured I’d share what my screen looks like when I go into my unit. I keep my unit at 125 degrees Fahrenheit but now that I have “the power” I’m going to bump that up before my shower because I like to scorch myself 😉

Screenshot_2016-01-31-18-09-05

The obvious control you have with this is on demand temperature changes and changing from Energy Saver to Performance mode. But you can also schedule a vacation so the unit works less while you’re away for an extended period of time and you can view your alerts.

I hope you’ve found this all interesting. I love to share what goes on with making our home more comfortable for us and this is more than I ever imagined when we started these renovations. (PS- haven’t forgotten about the bathroom, I’ll be back to chatting about that soon)
