The Global Styler: Tiled Headboard

July 3, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

rp_FB_IMG_1486355182324-e1486355214984.jpg

Bringing the global decor look to your home adds a richness that is unmatched. An appreciation for other cultures is unique to each person and bringing that interest to how you decorate makes the space more definitively yours. For me, I’ve always been obsessed with lanterns, embroidered fabrics, patterned tiles and weavings. Where in the world will you find all these things? Morocco.

This month I’ll be taking on the $100 room challenge and the room I’ll be making over is my bedroom. When the theme, “PATTERN,” was chosen for this month, I knew I wanted to cheat a little and try out a project I’d had on my mind for a while.

Stephanie from Casa Watkind Living and Kathy from Up To Date Interiors are also sharing global inspired projects today with the theme Pattern. Make sure to stick around until the end and head their way next.

tutorial

1. Have the home improvement store cut the plywood (1/2 in. X 4 ft. X 8 ft.) At 44 inches and then the remainder in half.

2. On the halves pieces (approximately 26 inches), use the construction adhesive to attach the tiles to the plywood.

3. With a rag and stain, wipe over the 44 inch piece and around the tiles.

4. Lay the 44 inch piece over top the halves pieces and press the pieces together until the tiles meet up to the sides of the 44 inch piece.

5. Use wood screws to attach at the bottom. Place a dollop of construction adhesive between the pieces at the top and clamp.

6. Once adhesive dries, secure the top with more screws from the back.

7. Drill from the back of Tara bed headboard frame to secure headboard to bed.

It’s much bigger than the DIY headboard I had in here before. I find the larger more stately furniture to be more reminiscent of middle eastern style than the low profile is Scandinavian. I like the impact.

Now, my friends are also sharing globally inspired pattern projects today. Here they are:

Let’s explore options for budget boho style together. DIY Encaustic Tile Look Alike Landscape Pavers

June 28, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

We are all loving the cement tile look right now. With retro, vintage and globally inspired designs, they truly are suited for a variety of spaces. Even though we’ve started seeing an influx of knock-offs hitting the scene, they can still be pricey when working within a tight budget. And there hasn’t been much to hit the outdoor living spaces scene yet. So I came up with a way to get the cement tile look for outdoor spaces but for a very budget friendly price.

the more you know

“Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles in which the pattern or figure on the surface is not a product of the glaze but of different colors of clay. They are usually of two colors but a tile may be composed of as many as six. The pattern appears inlaid into the body of the tile, so that the design remains as the tile is worn down.” [excerpt from Wikipedia- Read More]

The same process applies for the now popularized encaustic cement tiles. Instead of clay, cement is used. Obviously this process is more labor intensive (even if it’s done by machines and not people) and therefore costs more than the look alikes where the pattern is merely glazed over top a plain tile. In most every interior space you and I would ever deal with, these tiles are perfectly suitable and won’t wear down to reveal the true colors of the tile.

supplies

For exteriors, simple grey pavers are fantastic for recreating the look. They’re neutral enough for more any space and the colors you choose to put onto it will show up easier than if you chose a colored or darker or more textured stone.

I went with the square grey patio stone from Lowe’s. I ordered online, went to the online order pick up desk and they directed me to where I should park my truck. They did all the loading with a fork lift. Pretty awesome.

To make the design, I used the Americana Fleur De Lis stencil with a sponge brush and DecoArt patio paint in the color black.

I am absolutely in love with how they came out and all my friends and family comment on them when they visit, too. It’s a little touch that helps bring style and interest to a space that can look pretty cookie cutter. I find the selection of outdoor landscaping to be pretty basic and complements all styles. But with a little paint and a stencil, those basic pieces can be turned into  a true design feature. I hope you enjoyed!

My Budget Boho Window Curtains

June 26, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

I receive a fair amount of comments on my Instagram from fellow boho babes wondering about the curtains I have hanging in my living room. Today, I’m going to answer the question in my quick and easy budget curtain resource guide. But before we jump into it, how much do you spend on curtains for your abode?

Quick & Easy Bidget Curtain Resourse Guide

The curtains themselves are just inexpensive tapestries that I purchased through Amazon. The designs are all perfectly boho and they come in an array of flattering colors and patterns. You can get them in different sizes and even for large sixes meant to cover a queen or king sized bed is still really cheap.

My Budget Boho Window Curtains- Bohemian window treatments @adesignerathome

But since they’re tapestries and not curtains, there’s no loop or grommets to put it onto a curtain rod. I’m not a seamstress. I don’t own a sewing machine and I’m not keen on hand sewing things when I don’t have to.

The solution for that is also an Amazon buy. Curtain ring clips are perfect for hanging anything up on a rod that doesn’t have loops (like drop cloths and sheets!). They open up the possibilities for window treatments nicely. I’ve used these in the past for regular curtains, too, to give them a bit more length and it makes sliding them open and closed much easier.

And if you don’t have a rod, I’m in love with my double curtain rod. It allows me to layer curtains with tapestries for that layered boho look without multiple holes in the wall. I use them for the large set of windows in my living room so that I can have more light in the room with lace curtains and then when we need privacy or to be shielded some from the sun, I have the large tapestries that can easily be pulled closed.

But you could also do two layers for black out versus letting some light through or multiple tapestries for a truly collected look.

It’s really that simple! I hope this settles the question. I purchase super inexpensive tapestries mostly designed for draping over a bed or for hanging on the wall. I then add clip rings so that they’ll hang from a curtain rod without having to worry about sewing or gluing loops.

What’s your favorite resource for window curtains?

35 Wood Watches Under $35

June 23, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It seems like the recent trend in fashion accessories are wood watches. The look is earthy and I love the boho vibe to it. Plus, any excuse to add in another cute piece of jewelry has me convinced to jump on the trend. But I’m a budget boho babe and I know y’all are, too. So I sat down and did some research to find 35 chic wooden watched for under 35 dollars. Because that’s a price I can get behind.

Have you been on Instagram in the past few months? Have you seen everyone posting about wood watches? I was approached by the brand. They wanted to know if I’d exchange a watch for styled photos and amplification on social media. I looked at the retail price of those watches and was like- heck no! I would never spend that much money on a watch and I certainly wasn’t going to trade my time and trust with my readers for a watch I’d never buy in the first place.

These watches though? I’d definitely wear these ones! In fact, I’m torn between the rainbow and light maple. Which would you choose?

Braided Rope Plant Hanger

June 19, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

If you’re not yet making your own hanging planters, you need to be! They’re quite easy and inexpensive. I’ve made a variety of different hanging planters and today I’m going to show you my favorite one thus far. Minimalistic with boho flair using cotton rope and fringing out the ends makes for a really pretty setting with some cascading greenery.

Simple Minty Eye Makeup Look (Indigenous Beauty Brands)

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]
