Addressing things with the Bathroom

March 6, 2018 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to create my dream bathroom. It had to be done on a budget though. And after majorly messing up some do-it-yourself work, we had to pay pros to come in a do some things. Unfortunately, not all pros are created equal and I ended up a bit deflated with how everything came out. This month I’m going to get myself excited about this room again as I will be working on it for the Bathroom Primp and Pamper Blog Hop.

C964CD61-EE33-47C5-AE91-72B92130997B

I’d like to thank our host Jeweled Interiors for grouping us for this blog hop. It’s always motivating to have peers and a timeline to get something done! I’m excited to go in an make some changes that will make the space function better for us.

If you’ve come here from Maggie Overby Studios– greetings! I’m a fan of Maggie myself! She has the best pottery collection and I’m excited to see how she transforms her bathroom to be the stylish space she deserves. My name is Corinna and I am a bit of a hippie with a boho home. I’m a Gemini, I love textiles and I compost. Let me share what my bathroom looks like in the current…

It looks pretty great (for the size it is and with my taste in decor), but it’s really not in person. Here are some of the problems I want to address:

1. They grouted where there should be caulk.E841A9A3-27BE-4E6A-B366-E0FEE953EEFB

We’ve got this fun gap going on and water has seeped behind the paint because grout doesn’t flex. Caulk does. Bath tubs get really heavy when you fill them with bodies and water. They naturally shift some when that happens and that’s why you use a rubbery material like caulk. So I need to pull up all the grout where it shouldn’t be and put down caulk.

2. I miss having a hand held shower nozzle.

64FA57FA-80B8-4E7E-A57F-7A00C8F0144E

They make cleaning walls of tile so much easier. And sometimes my kid jumps in the bath with me and a secondary way to spray soap out of my hair would be a first world perk for sure.

3. I need a skinnier vanity

0CA14128-114F-443B-8DE5-692492B5847A

When we bought the house, it has a hideously gigantic vanity. It’s a very narrow bathroom and the clearance to get to the toilet behind the tub is tight. I’m tired of doing a shimmy to get back there. This vanity was an improvement, but it’s time to find the smallest depth vanity in the world. Wish me and my budget good luck ????????

4. I need new towels

CC7FAA07-06D7-411B-8898-6582BA6B19CC

I have peshtemals but they aren’t very cozy. I want pretty and plush towels. It’s slightly function but mostly a form request for this one.

Beyond that? I’d really like to paint. Really need to upgrade the window. And I want to put a cabinet above the toilet. But those things aren’t on the short list of musts. I’ll see if time and money permit to get those things done, too.

So what are my blogging pals doing to their bathrooms? Let’s check them out! Next on the Hop is My Eclectic Nest

5 Minute Dollar Store Spring Wreath

March 5, 2018 by CORINNA HENDERSON

the-global-styler-header

With Spring practically right on us, it’s the perfect time to add a lively feel to our homes. But we are busy spring cleaning right? That’s why this month’s edition of The Global Style is 5 minute or less home decor crafts for Spring. Here on A Designer At Home, we are taking supplies from a quick trip to the Dollar Store to make an easy Spring Wreath.

supplies

  • Grapevine Wreath
  • Faux Succulents
  • Hot Glue Sticks and Gun

tutorial

Arranging faux succulents for a spring wreath

This is really, really easy. First, you’ll have to heat up your glue gun.

Then, do a dry run of where you want everything placed. If you can find the same or even just similar succulents as the ones I uaed, you can follow my design. If not, it’s pretty easy to group a few larger bundles. Add vines to either end and add an interesting bundle on the lower end and in the center.

For pieces that have wire in the stem, stick it into the wreath and wrap it around a branch. For the pieces that done have wire, try to wedge it into the wreath where it is stuck between two branches.

Then place a generous amount of glue to hold it in place.

This sweet little greeting for our guests is an easy way to usher in the warmer and longer days. And it’s incredibly easy on the wallet!

March #showmeyourboho Daily Insta Story Prompts

March 1, 2018 by CORINNA HENDERSON

march-daily-insta-story-showmeyourboho-challenge

We’ve made it through two months of the year with daily #showmeyourboho Instagram photo posts. Now we are going to shake things up and challenge ourselves to use the Instagram stories feature every day. The prompts are designed to take you around various different spaces of your home. Be authentic! Don’t skip a day just because you’re nervous about how a space looks. But if you’re not feeling inspired to take the challenge each day- definitely skip a day. And if a prompt doesn’t apply to your abode, share something else that works better for you.

You can still tag in your stories. Just the text option and typing a handle or hashtag with tag the story. So make sure you’re sharing your stories with #showmeyourboho.

We will also be picking back up with our daily threads in the Facebook group- Bohemian Interiors. So each day you can leave your profile link so the tribe can come watch your stories and you can easily find and watch theirs, too.

I hope you enjoy this spin on the daily challenges. If you just aren’t into stories but still want to play along, you can use the prompts as daily photo inspiration, too.

Boho Botanical Spring Tablescape

February 28, 2018 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Boho tablescape
Bohemian meets Spring in this whimsical small space and budget friendly tablescape.

I thought the verdict for this year’s winter on Groundhog Day was that we were in for a long winter. But it’s surely seemed the opposite! I’ve been so inspired by the milder days that we’ve dove into getting the garden ready and adding spring touches to our home. In a little celebration of the spring feel, I’ve joined a blog hop to share spring tablescape ideas. I’ve gone with a colorful bohemian table setting with birds and flowers. I do love a little whimsy and spring is the perfect time of year to let it play out in a fun way!

Before I jump into my ideas and the bohemian tablescape I enjoyed creating, I want to say “hello!” to any new faces that may be stopping by from Ariel’s blog (PMQ for Two). My name is Corinna and I have a colorful bohemian style in a basic 1950’s brick ranch home. Thank you for coming by and I hope you enjoy the ideas I have to share with you ♥️

Whimsical Boho Spring Tablescape

For the tablecloth, I used a flower shaped tapestry with fringe that I bought through Amazon. It adds a flirty and fun feel to the whole space and it’s easy to switch out for activities and other occasions.

I pretty much always opt to use dishes from the dollar store. The colorful glass cups, the bowls and the larger dinner plates are from my local dollar stores. We’ve broken some expensive dishes I the past so these are perfect for this phase of life.

Budget Friendly spring tablescape

Vegan friendly fettuccine Alfredo spring table setting

I chose to pick greenery and flowers from the garden. Usually I’d pick up a bouquet from Trader Joe’s, but the weather was unpleasant and I had daffodils and camellias in the yard anyways. I use clippings from one of my houseplants to fill it in and add a special touch to the silverware.

Tips To Get The Look:

• Start with a bright floral inspired tablecloth
• Layer placemats, chargers and smaller plates and bowls
• Group candlesticks, salt and pepper shakers and small decorative crystals around a vase
• Fill vase with foliage from the yard
• Mix drinking glass and napkin colors

Thank you again for coming by! To continue the blog hop, you’ll visit Kathy from Up To Date Interiors. And you’ll definitely want to see her ideas if you haven’t! She lives in Japan and incorporates some of that influence into her decorating. Enjoy and be well!

The Colorful Jungle Boho Kids Room

February 6, 2018 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Colorful Boho Kid's Room with Bunkbed and live plants via @thebohoabode at ADesignerAtHome.com

If you asked me last year if I thought my son’s room was going to be the space it is now, I probably would have just cried. The space fell to the wayside for so long that it had started to resemble a storage unit gone bad. There was the failed attempt at refinishing floors and piles on top of piles of things that needed to be dealt with but was hidden instead. But now the room is finished! And feels like we’ve gained actual square footage in our home! Today, im sharing with you my labor of love: The colorful jungle boho kids room reveal.

If you need a refresher on where we started, here’s the first blog post and a flashback:

The Before.

Final Week Vlog:

The Room Reveal

Since this is my baby, I treated it like so and took many pictures. To make it easy to navigate and understand what exactly I’m throwing your way, I’ve split it into sections with introductions.

The Bunk Bed

The first thing he ever asked for in his room was a bunkbed. He had to have one simply for the novelty of it. He still excitedly talks about how he can have his friends and family sleep over and stay on either bunk. Previously I’ve shared my tips for making the bunkbed a stylist focal point for the room. And now I’m going to show you how it came out!

The Top Bunk

I actually really want to nix the top mattress and use plywood and carpet to make it a play area, like a loft. But I haven’t finalized the logistics on that idea yet so we’ve decked it in a fun mix of pillows and a simple elephant tapestry. While he likes the idea of sleeping up here, he’s just not quite ready to make that leap. He’s also a very sprawled out kind of sleeper so a twin would be tight. So he uses it sofa style during the day to hang out and watch videos on.

The Windows

They’re the first thing you see when you walk into the room so I wanted them to be a beautiful welcome. My son sits at windows often to watch the birds and has a bird feeder outside his window that I wanted him to be able to enjoy from here. My simple formula for boho beautiful windows is a natural material shade + soft patterned or embellished curtains + hanging macrame planters. It seriously looks so good every time!

This beat up piece of furniture was a Craigslist find a few years ago. For $20 I had to have it for the hardware alone! Unfortunately it’s not solid wood and it’s starting to fall apart so it’s here, but not for too long. After begging for a bunkbed, my kiddo started begging for a fishtank in his room. Naturally it wound up here and it actually blends in with the other decor pretty well!

Seriously the squeals of delight every time progress was made from my kiddo were the sweetest of icing on the cake. It’s not quite as jungle as he wants it to be but we will get there in time. We have to be sure the plants we add will fare well with the weird lighting in this room so we will take it slow.

I hope you’ve enjoyed following along with this year’s challenge! A lot went into this room but nothing that’s going to cost you a fortune to replicate nor are there any special skill DIYs to tackle. If youve got a little one in your life with a flair for color and plants, I hope this transformation gives you ideas for making their room magical ????

Now I’m going to pass you off to the wonderful ladies who participated in this challenge and are revealing their spaces, too. And if you refreshed anything this mobth, make sure you take the opportunity to link up the finished project in the link up below!

Boho Henna Inspired Napkin Rings Tutorial

Create a special handmade piece for your romantic Bohemian table setting this Valentine’s day with these painted napkin rings. Using paint pens makes this craft an easy and relatively mess free one!

1. Prepare the napkin rings by making sure they are clean.

2. Prime the paint pens by shaking and pressing them until the tip is saturated with ink.

3. Using a pencil, draw 4 tick marks equal distance around the base of the ring.

4. Draw 4 more ticks on the other end rotated so that they are halfway between the marks on the other end.

5. With the pink pen, use the tick marks as a guide to create a petal shape.

6. Then create a skinnier petal shape by following the same shape.

7. Using the white pen, draw dots between the two layers of petal shapes.
