Interior Design Coloring Books

Interior Design Coloring Books Matching Passion with Stress Relief

Many of you who follow the happenings of this blog already know that recently I quit my job without a backup for that income. The stress I was feeling was affecting all parts of me, mentally, physically and emotionally. So my husband and I agreed to have me quit and we’d figure it out day by day. So far, it’s been the biggest blessing I’ve ever experienced. Without getting too emotionally and making this awkward for anyone else to read, I’ll leave at I did it, I’m happy and I’m not nearly as stressed out as I was before.

So what do I do to fill my days? Besides being more present my son, friends, family and husband, my house is cleaner, more projects are finished, I garden more successfully, pray more deeply and I cook. I’m not more present here on the blog, but I am enjoying refining and growing my interior design style during this time, too.

Between practice and reading I feel like I’m learning a lot. I’ve found a way to have fun with this passion and destress at the same time are interior design coloring books. It’s something I can do to keep busy and off of facebook while my son plays with his friends and it’s therapeutic and fun. And since it’s related to the realm of decorating and design, I thought I’d pull together some of my favorite coloring books and others I’m personally wanting to try here on the blog to share with you.

I’m a huge fan of the blog and book author, Melissa Michaels. She writes at The Inspired Room and even though our styles differ quite a bit, her ideals and practical approach to decorating is one I admire. I’ve been part of the book launch promotion group for her past 3 books and I’m in the group again for her coloring book release. I’m not obligated in any way to share the coloring book here today but I have been luh-ving it so I wanted to mention it just in case you’re in the market, I do think you should check it out.

The Inspired Room Coloring Book: Creative Spaces to Decorate as You Dream

The ones I’m most excited about trying next are these next two. The subject matter of the first is right up my alley and I think if you’re into the boho/eclectic style, you’ll find yourself drawn to this one, too. And the other just looks hilariously reassuring because that cover- it’s actually messier than most of my house (this shocks me ;))

If you’re into lots of little details, these two below are ones I really liked the concept behind. The pages show clear scenes but give you lots of options for making the details as different as you want.

Color At Home: A Young House Love Coloring Book

Granted, a lot of the books cater to a specific style. But I still find it fun taking those bones and transforming them with color. It’s like a challenge. Probably one designers on tight budgets feel often since the ideal piece doesn’t always magically appear for a good price.

There are even series of books dedicated to the stress relief properties of this hobby. Pretty cool, eh?

Some things I’ve been looking for in coloring books that may help you, too:

  • Clear lines. Not enough definition of the subjects on the page and they become fustratingly difficult to color.
  • A variety of designs to color. Some rooms, some pillows, etc.
  • Removeable pages.
  • Designs on only 1 side of the page so the colors don’t get muddles.
  • Thicker than printer paper pages so the pages don’t ripple.

So there you go! I hope you give book coloring a try. It may not be for everyone, but they’re pretty inexpensive to pick up and try so I think the investment is worth it. Do you have any favorites? I’ll be honest, I really like the ones with mandalas, too!

Brass and Wood Tones End Table Styling

June 23, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey guys! Recently I’ve been working on lots and lots of little projects around the house. Lots of puttering between things that from the surface don’t look like a lot is evolving. But I’m chipping away and slowing refining and adjusting things to match what I’ve dreamed for these spaces for years.

Today I wanted to share a look at the end tables in my living room that just got a slightly new look thanks to 2 recent thrift scores. 1. The brass thing with legs. Reminds me of a trivet but the legs are much too tall… or are they? And 2. The cute wooden box with coaster “drawers.” I love the little hardware and am a die hard lover of wood. So it came home of course!

The tray is also thrifted, the basket I’ve had for 10 years originally purchasing it at the Dollar Tree, the woven bowl and metallic “planter” (actually a votive, or a vase? Maybe? Now I realize I don’t remember) were purchased a while back on clearance at Target. And the lamp I found second hand via eBay.

Now that I’ve shared my recent thrift scores, here are my favorites from the feed:

Wanna Play? Here’s The Rules!

  • We want you to participate! Hit up your local thrift stores, craigslist, yard sales, estate sales, side of the road, anything! Thrifty doesn’t necessarily mean from a thrift store. We want to see your good deals, wacky finds and treasures.
  • Don’t feel like you need to save those finds for Thursdays! Yes, features are shared on our blogs and Instagram on Thursdays, but we’re all checking in on (and using!) the hashtag all week long. So, when you see/find it, feel free to share it!
  • Want to get featured? Add the #thriftscorethursdsay hashtag, Follow the hosts (@the_gathered_home, @primitiveandproper, @adesignerathome and @maggieoverbystudios) and tag a friend to play along, too!
  • Each week, Cassie from Primitive and Proper, Brynne from The Gathered Home, Maggie from Maggie Overby Studios and  Myself (A Designer At Home) will pick a favorite thrift score or two to feature! So please note that by linking up with #thriftscorethursday, you are giving us permission to share your finds via social media or on our blogs.

All Instagramed out yet? I sure hope not! Because you’re not finished. Yup, you’ve got more thrift scores to look at. I know you’re not disappointed. Ha. Click on my beautiful cohost’s faces below to check out what they’ve scored and featured.

Bell Garland Fireplace Screen

June 21, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Colorful bohemian gypsy eclectic fireplace in dining room

Hey, hello!

There’s a monthly challenge that my friend Jess from Domicile 37 hosts every month that invites your favorite bloggers to create a project inspired by the months themed retailer or designer. This month’s themed shop is Urban Outfitters.

Always on top of current decor trends, urban outfitters is a place with really cool pieces- most of which are within the average bears reasonable budget.

But reasonable enough budget isn’t always my and your reality so we’re going to get creative, okay?

Before I share what I created, let’s get into a little “why?”

If you’re new here, you may not have seen my recent faux fireplace project for my dining room. It’s teal and fun and my dreams come true. It’s a focal point in my dining room aservice a fireplace (even faux) should be. But the space below the fireplace has been bugging me.

I don’t have the budget right now to do anything tile related like I’d like to do. And I don’t care for the chalkboard inserts, they’re really cool for the right space but this isn’t the vibe or look for mine. Plus I just did a ton of work doing a wainscoting look in here so I’m wanting to keep that partially visible for a bit (yeah I can see it elsewhere in the room but still). So I really settled on a screen type feature.

I had found this one on Offer Up. It’s like Craigslist in app form if you’re not familiar. But it sold before I could pick it up.

Bell fireplace screen

I really liked the bells and the slight nod to oriental decor that I love. When perusing Urban Outfitters for inspiration, I found the Magical Thinking Klara Hanging Wall Decor, I thought, “Hey, this has bells and has a cool shape. I like it.” And then I thought about it a bit more and decided it would make the perfect simple project to adjust a bit for my preferred location.

So I picked up 2 dozen adorable 2 inch tall bells, found a skein of black embroidery floss, grabbed 2 tacks and a pair of scissors and I was ready to create.

Teal fireplace with hanging bells for faux fireplace screen

Decorating with peacock influence and attempting to add old house charm to a basic brick ranch

DIY home decorating adding missing character like teal fireplace, wainscoting and bell charm

You’ll notice I didn’t use 2 dozen bells here. And that’s because I also recreated the bell garland chime from Urban Outfitters. If you want to see how that turned out, I’m also sharing my front porch alternative and some curb appeal updates today. The bell garland makes an appearance there. 🙂

I hope the idea of using popular retailers gives you some inspiration to take inspiration from their merchandise to create decor for your own home. Creating is therapeutic so it’s sure to be a lot of fun. Please also visit my friends who have shared their own inspired by creations today. Thanks so much for stopping by!

Front Porch Alternative: A Welcoming Boho Patio

June 21, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It’s here! The curb appeal improvement challenge is coming to an end officially. It’s been a fun 5 weeks sharing little bits and pieces but today there are 11 reveals.

Our yard started off bland, brick and uninviting. I felt so behind the curve after seeing where these other lovely ladies were starting off. I had lots of ideas and dreams for the space, ones that will take much longer than 5 weeks. But I used this time to address 2 main problems.

1. The doorway was dirty, dim and just hadn’t been cared for.

2. There’s no front porch area for sitting and greeting friends.

1950's built brick home before a curb appeal makeover project

And here’s the progress I’ve made:

Curb appeal progress on a 1950s basic brick ranch

Unfortunately I didn’t get the whole front yard looking spiffier but it’s a great start and I’m anxious to get going on this other side:

Future garden bed

I also have plans to paint the awnings. So make sure you’re keeping up with me via your favorite blog reading methods and we’ll get to this side next.

But let’s look at the prettier side, because that’s why we’re here today 🙂

The metal side table, citronella candle, welcome mat and rug are from AtHome. The chairs and wicker set are Craigslist finds. The “table cloth” is a thrifed scarf. Blush pillow, front porch and side yard lighting, and wall decor is from LampsPlus. Pavers and plants are from Lowes. Mailbox is from Amazon.

I created the door bell garland with extra bells from an Urban Outfitters inspired faux fireplace screen project I’m also sharing today.

Catch up with the other reveals for all the inspiration youll need to get your own curb appeal looking better:

Starting LDN and everything else I’ve tried for CFS so far…

I’ve been taking low dose naltrexone (ldn) for just over a month at this point and I wanted to share an update on how it’s been going thus far. I started taking ldn because I tried everything else in an attempt to feel better. At my last PCP appointment, I told him I’d be trying […]

Checkerboard: The Latest Insta-Trend

You ever first see a trend and think, “nope, not for me.” That was, and still a little, me with the checkerboard trend. I’ve never liked checkerboard walls or floors. At least not enough to semi-permanently put it somewhere in my home. But I am still in pursuit of an interior design certificate and job […]

My best Amazon Prime Purchases Ever

Simple Minty Eye Makeup Look (Indigenous Beauty Brands)

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]
