Global Boho Art Prints: Boho Styling

July 26, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

global boho art styled spaces

To piggy back on yesterday’s post about adding art as a layer of a globally decorated space, I wanted to round up some of my favorite art that has global boho flair to it. Since thrifting isn’t accessible to everyone and a lot of art on places like Etsy are first come first serve, I went with Minted as the retailer I’ll feature today because there’s essentially enough to go around for all of you who read here should you decide to buy a piece or not. So how about some global boho art to feast your eyes on today?

Hopefully you’ll find something here today that you love. Enjoy browsing!

Everything from the depictions of the land, to inspiration of the culture. They all add a flavor and level on interest to decorating spaces. Choosing global art for your interiors is definitely a great choice for the fan of eclectic.

Art From Other Cultures

July 25, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Week 3 of the “Get The Global Look” series is here. As Katie Gavigan Interiors, Casa Watkins Living and myself walk you through creating a global style space, we’ve tried to break it down into bite size layers. Now that we’ve set the foundation of the space with furniture and we’ve added texture and interest to the space with textiles, it’s time for us to start getting personal. And one of the most personal pieces you can put in a space is Art. Because everyone gravitates towards different styles and types of art, I cannot tell you exactly what to put in your space. But hopefully these ideas and all our ideas combined will help you find what speaks to you.

So we’re speaking of a global style which means encompassing some or all decor influenced and gathered from cultures around the world. There’s a ton of flexibility on how exactly you want to interpret that. And because the majority of the world’s population doesn’t have a lot of practical use for art, there’s a lot of different “art” to choose from other than the standard print in frame.

Here’s what I personally love, own versions of and recommend you start with:

Japanese Hand Painted Plates and Silk

Imari ceramics are my personal favorite, but I’ve also seen painted silk screens that would add a very interesting oriental vibe to any space.

Chinoiserie Framed Mirrors

BAM BOO MIRRORS. They’re quite literally perfection and you need at least one in your life. Go as simple or as ornate as you can handle.

Framed Fabrics

Remember all those incredible textiles we chatted about last week? Sometimes you can’t figure out how to use them as pillows, blankets, etc. So frame it (or free hang it) and you’ll have instant beautiful, rich art. You can read up more about my crush on textiles and ways to use them here.

Baskets

African baskets are the bees knees, but that’s not the only place to get baskets worthy of display on your walls. Mexico and South America have strong traditions in basket weaving techniques, too.

Wall Hanging

I don’t know that there’s much I can say about weavings that would be all that different than what I’ve said about them before. They’re fun to DIY, they bring in a gorgeous element of texture and interest and their impact in limited only by your willingness to let them take over the space or let them stay understated.

Art depicting landscapes, architecture and life abroad.

Do I need to elaborate on this one? Pick a pretty place abroad and stick it on your wall. I did this in my bedroom with a free photo of Morocco (or so it says, I don’t for sure) from pixabay that I had framed through Framebridge for my hallway and now bedroom.

Try your hand at DIY and recreate techniques from around the world.

Think Shibori, Weavings or an abstract art using colors and patterns from your favorite culture.

I hope this little 101 on global boho art has given you some ideas for decorating your own global space.

Your Homework:

Want to get the global style look in your home? Make sure you’re following the weekly challenges to get you moving in the right direction! Week 1 and Week 2.

This Week: Explore the different options for global wall art. Check out everything we’ve shared and then some. Then pick a piece you normally wouldn’t gravitate towards and put it in your home. This is going to be the most challenging because it’s going to teach you to play with colors, patterns and balancing a space visually with different elements.

How Not To Paint A Bathroom Vanity

July 23, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey guys. Yes, you read that right. I’m here to admit another failure in my decorating adventures. Well, not a total failure but it didn’t turn out the way I’d imagined when I started painting my bathroom vanity. Painting furniture is not the easy task that the internet can sometimes make it seem. There’s a lot of patience and elbow grease that goes into painting a bathroom vanity just like any other piece. Even after reading several how to paint furniture tutorials, I still made errors and I hope they’ll help you if you try to do this yourself.

peek of the bathroom and little details of the hallway

When shopping last fall for a bathroom vanity, the color didn’t matter because I knew from the beginning that I wanted it a color I couldn’t buy outright. The folks over at HOMERIGHT provided me with their paint sprayer after meeting them at Haven Conference last year. And I just knew I was going to use it to paint whichever vanity I found for cheap.

I ended finding a vanity, it wasn’t cheap and it wasn’t solid wood. *smacks forehead* But it seemed perfect for me at the time. The weather was starting to cool and all I wanted was to get the thing painted fast so we could get it in.

20151205_145430

Mistake #1

Don’t rush to paint anything. Seriously. Just don’t do it. I now have a ton of clean up on the inside of the cabinet because I didn’t take the preliminary steps to protect surfaces and remove doors, etc.

Mistake #2

I wasn’t 100% confident in my pre sanding abilities so I wanted to give it the best possible chance against chipping. On top of using Kilz primer, I also thought it’d be a good idea to seal with polycrylic. I used it in the paint sprayer and because of my impatience, I hadn’t been cleaning the nozzle very well so it was clogged and I wanted it sealed in 1 coat. The next day the entire piece was coated with drips.

So I had to go back in and sand back breakingly hard anyways.

Mistake #3

This was not a good time to go form over function. I should have bought a wood piece point blank. I’m now having to play surgery on the bottoms of the side panels where the cheap particleboard started to break up.

You can warn others of the mistakes I made by sharing this post. Here’s an image you could share to Pinterest/Facebook/Twitter:

3 mistakes i made painting my bathroom vanity

At the end of the day, I’m still really excited with the piece that I have in my bathroom. I wouldn’t go back to a plain colored vanity any time soon. I just love the substance it gives the space. I would absolutely do everything to get the end product differently if I ever undertake this kind of thing again.

I have used my brand provided HOMERIGHT products for lots of projects at this point and I’ve loved them. I do think it pays to learn a hard lesson of impatience with practice pieces. I do have a good success story coming soon with these pieces so stay tuned for that.

Looking to paint a piece? Try these products:

Spray Shield
Paint Sprayer
KILZ Original Spray Paint
Latex Paint
Sand Paper

My Book Reading Corner: Rattan Lounger

July 21, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A little space in my home that I’ve been doing a tiny bit of work on is a “reading” corner. Ir’s in the dining room and it’s part of the wall I mentioned being a mud room kind of space a while back. I have the piece that is acting as a hideaway office of sorts. To the left of it I have baskets a coat rack and a mess of other things as this space is still coming together. On the other side I didn’t have any ideas.

Until I came across this unique rattan lounger. It’s petite in size, but the really neat part is the foot rest that slides in and out of the bottom. So it goes from cute rattan armchair to relaxing lounger.

Vintage rattan lounger

I’m hoping to put shelves on this wall soon for books to help it function better as a reading corner. I recently put up these clipboards I picked up ages ago from the dollar store. I’ve got artwork created by my son and myself up here so he has a place to display his hobbies, too.

And I had to add the globe. I’m far from someone you’d see having a house with a library so I thought it’d be a bit comical and fun to put the globe here.

You know what else is fun? FEATURES 🙂

There’s a common thread with all these picks this week. I spotted something in each of these pictures that I also own. I started to notice the theme going through all the submissions so I had to go with it 😉
