You ever first see a trend and think, “nope, not for me.” That was, and still a little, me with the checkerboard trend. I’ve never liked checkerboard walls or floors. At least not enough to semi-permanently put it somewhere in my home. But I am still in pursuit of an interior design certificate and job so I try to embrace every trend. Afterall, every trend is perfect for someone. Since Checkerboard is the latest insta-trend, let’s look at some insta-examples.

Part of mindful consumerism, for me at least, is intentionally seeking out companies founded and owned by marginalized communities. Heritage and pride months are the perfect reminder to seek out alternative sources for goods and services. Join me in celebrating pride month with LGBT businesses below.

As my mental health has improved, I’ve enjoyed getting back into my mindfulness consumerism series. With AAPI month upon us, and quickly coming to an end, I took stock of what I needed to purchase and set out to buy replacements from AAPI skincare and beauty brands. I needed face wash, serum, and oil. For beauty, I didn’t exactly *need* much but there were deals and such. I’ll delve into that more below.

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today.
Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And a dark neutral lip for the moodiness that autumn begs for.

My base makeup for this look is Cheekbone Beauty Sustain Complexion Pencil in the color Fair 2. Glides on the skin comfortable straight from the pencil and blends out nicely with a damp beauty sponge.
Before I do anything else with the face, I move onto another Cheekbone Beauty product. I use the Sustain Eyeshadow Pencil in Seafoam Green straight on the eyelid and blend it out with my finger.
Atop that I press Indigenous Cosmetics’ loose pigment in abalone. A gorgeous blue green shifting powder that really pops against the seafoam green.
I go back to my base makeup while the eyeshadow sets. Cheekbone Beauty’s Sustain Blush/Bronzer duo finishes off the remainder of face makeup I’ll use. A diffused blend of bronzer along my forehead, temples, cheek bones and jawbone. The blush I apply to the apples of my cheeks and over my nose.
For shine, dimension, and just because I love it, I apply bubble gum pigment from Indigenous Cosmetics to the apples of my cheeks and cheekbones.
Back to the eyes, I use Prados Beauty’s Mora Eyeliner to create a sharp cat eye wing liner. It’s a very chic purple felt tip pen. I like to draw the line out towards the side of my face versus up towards my brow because I find it more flattering for my eye shape and crease.

I finish the look by deepening my lash color and adding volume with Cheekbone Beauty’s Sustain Mascara. And while I’m sorting out face hairs, I use their Sustain Brow Gel in brown on my eyebrows. I like to use an angled brush to pick up product from the wand to really carve my shape. Then a spoolie to blend things out to look more natural.
I complete the look with Ikupa Beauty’s Creamy Matte Liquid Lipstick in Praise Rose. I feel like these deeper, grey leaning neutral colors to be the most flattering neutral on me. Most pull too orange, too pastel, or too warm for my skintone.
