A Mid Century China Cabinet I Don’t Need & Too Much Work Left

May 4, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Today is the final check in before the reveal of our spaces for the 6 week One Room Challenge. Just to refresh, I’ve chosen to makeover my dining room. The theme for the space is Vintage Eclectic with strong boho vibes. I’ve split the space into 2 main spaces and 4 main functions. Dining and Mudroom are the two main spaces. The backdoor is off this room and we have a parking pad out back. So we go in and out this door an awful lot and it makes sense to designate jacket, bag and shoe drop off and storage here. The 4 main functions of the space are getting in and out the door, eating, crafting and blog work.

Our home is 1,200 square feet and there just isn’t the space to have a separate crafting and working spaces. We all enjoy being right on top of each other while we do different activities so that works out just dandy for us!

We made and cancelled plans for wainscotting. Found and lost a dining set. Fell behind on painting and fireplace plans due to a stomach bug. And I’ve shopped.

Rough Plans for the Faux Dining Room Fireplace

Yesterday the Craigslist Gods finally parted the heavy rains on me and I found a dining set! $200 was more than I wanted to spend right now, but it came with the table, 5 chairs (including 1 captains chair) and a china cabinet. I quite like the china cabinet I have so I may resell this one. Even though I like the color and style a lot. It’s a tough call! Mine has open shelves and cabinet, this one is all glass cabinet. Whenever I figure this out I’ll resell the one I won’t keep.

Late Night Chair Arranging- Couldn’t Lift the Table Alone!

Basically, I have all of the pieces to make this happen. But, I need to squeeze out the time to get it all together! I still have the next week and a half to finish up at my day job and hubby has started with a new job and won’t be home much the next couple of weeks. Life threw quite a bit at us this past month. I wouldn’t have thought any of this would happen!

In the next few days I’d really like to:

  1. Install the new pendant light
  2. Resize fireplace mantle
  3. Hang art and lights above fireplace mantle
  4. Finish getting the junk out of this space
  5. Finish Painting walls

And what I’d like to get done in the next month:

  1. Put up wallpaper
  2. Add some new trim (saving the fun job for another time)
  3. Refinish the table and chairs

This should get interesting! Follow along with the project: Sign Up For The Newsletter

Wainscotting Plans & Lighting

April 27, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It’s time to check in on the progress of our dining room makeover. The design for the space is overall eclectic with strong boho notes and a retro vibe. This past week has been incredibly stressful with a lot of intense life changes. So progress has slowed and it looks like it may hurt the overall project getting completed. Whaaa!

I’ll briefly gloss over the big stressor and that is my job! There was a huge issue that they don’t want to resolve so I’ve been voluntold that my last day is May 13th. Without set income, my cute wainscotting plans are on the back burner. And this totally sucks, but we’ve already started work on the roof (and that needed to be done ages ago). So we need to be careful about our spending here on out.

But the plans were really cute! Wanna see my terrible sketch?

rough mission style wainscoting plans for dining room

It’s supposed to be a simple flat panel design with strong mission/arts and crafts influence. I love mission style home details so this was going to be that special touch. I have a fireplace mantle that’s way too big my husband and I are having a bit of fun figuring out how to resize it. We can still put that in place even if the the rest of the feature isn’t panning out.

Lighting and art arrived! None of it has been installed because the art and the 2 swing arm lights are supposed to go above the fireplace and I was waiting because of the trim work but since that’s on hold we’ll go ahead and move along with that. And the overhead light I’m waiting to install until we’ve got our table situation figured out.

I’m using the hairpin legs from the round table I thrifted from Craigslist way back and we’re making a table top. It’s taking longer than was planned which was also a bummer because I had planned on having it finished in time for It’s So Ugly It’s Cool. But my gals totally rocked it and you can check out their projects: Framed Graphic Prints for Under $10, Dresser to Media Stand Makeover, It’s So Ugly It’s Cool: Kitchen Table Set, chinoiserie to velvet reupholstered vintage couch, How to Update a Thrifty Vase, and Thrifted Find | A Pretty Welcoming Vase.

What’s Left? My revised budget friendly list is:

  • Wallpaper
  • Finish Table Top
  • Install Lighting
  • Hang art
  • Resize and Install fireplace mantle and surround

Unless I make enough in sales from my craigslist listings, I will reuse chairs I already have to go with the table. I also have a really cool fabric I’ll hem down for a tablecloth (but that’s not in my final to do list, that may wait until later). And I want to get some of my plants hung instead of all over every surface I can clear off.

Progress I did make was getting the china cabinet cleared out and moved into the kitchen. And the rolling cart that was on that wall is emptied, cleaned and listed on Craigslist. Progress made? Yes. Still lots to do? Yup! Plans changed much? Absolutely! Ha, wish me luck!

Check out the other spaces at Calling It Home.

Huge Thank You To Lamps Plus, Minted, Wallpaper Boulevard, RusInUrbeHome and Purdy for providing product to make this space happen!

Epic Etsy Finds & The Shops Behind Them: Ball And Claw Vintage

April 17, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Epic Etsy Finds and The Shops Behind Them- part II

If you know anything about me by now, I love to get off topic. Especially when a room has a deadline. Instead of talking about the dining room I’m supposed to be working on, I wanted to chat a little bit today about another Epic Etsy find of mine and the shop behind the item! Because every great item on Etsy has an awesome shop behind it. Today, the spotlight is on Ball and Claw Vintage.

Have you seen their Instagram feed– holy beautiful boho!

So the reason why I wanted to chat about this particular shop today is because of their mud cloth inventory. And the reason why I wanted to chat about indigo mud cloths is because they are really beautiful faux upholstery fabrics. I love draping them over a chair, tucking it into the sides and keeping it that simple to cover old/ugly fabric.

And here’s a really cute clock I picked up to eventually use in my son’s room when that space gets finished. I love the turquoise!

The shop has a lot of other really cool merchandise, too. You’ll see the merchandise styled in their Instagram feed to give you an idea of their potential, but these pieces will look so good in an array of space. Here are a few of my faves:

Isn’t their stuff so cool? Perfect if you’re loving boho vibes like I do! Or if you just need a dose of cool textiles, they’ve surely got you covered. If you stop by their Instagram or Etsy shop, be sure to tell them I sent you.

My 6 Week Vintage Boho Dining Room Makeover

April 6, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It’s that time of year again.

I’ve just starting looking at doing some pretty intense changes to our dining room. Actually, right now it’s not a dining room. It’s the catch all room that I desperately need to address. When we bought the house, it was listed as the “den.” We don’t need two living spaces and no eating space. Without making this a dining space, we continue playing playdough and eating dining on the couch.

I dream of a vintage filled space with fun patterns, pops of color and boho. Give me all the boho 😉 And having it in 6 weeks sounds pretty awesome.

ORC

So I’m going to attempt to finish the One Room Challenge again! As a linking participant, I share my post with tons of other bloggers on Calling It Home‘s blog. Linda is the host of the challenge and that’s her blog. It’s not a competition, but just like the name suggests, it is a challenge. I’m going to show you a bit of the before and for 6 weeks I’m going to feverishly try to finish all my projects and get the room completed.

Here’s the Vintage Eclectic Dining Room moodboard I put together a few weeks ago when this vision was first starting to form:

vintage eclectic dining room mood board

Featured in my mood board: Hairpin Bench,  Chairs, Shades, Tapestry, China Cabinet from Retro Therapy Rehab, Dresser, Rug, Light, Bar Cart, Boho Chair

And here’s what I’m starting with:

2016-02-28-06.26.19-1.jpg.jpg

The part of the room you can’t see? Assume it looks like a tornado ripped a bunch of junk about. Just, trust me.

If I’m not posting here a whole lot in the next month, it’s because I’m knee deep in a million projects at once. But if it all turns out as I see it in my head, it’ll be worth it. Because look at this inspiration space. Yeah, I want those walls.

Where to buy global inspired and sourced bathroom accessories

April 5, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Global decor is having a hot moment right now and that is awesome. Even more traditionally decorated spaces are getting a fun pop with moroccan inspired tiles and mexican textiles. It’s a trend you totally ought to give a chance. Besides the obvious choices of baskets, tiles and pillows. What kinds of things can you use to infuse the styles of other parts of the world in other rooms of the house? Specifically a space like the bathroom, you know, because most of us aren’t using a ton of throw pillows in our bathroom.

Since I’ve been working on my own bathroom remodel with a strong emphasis on incorporating global sourced and inspired pieces, I thought it’d be a great time to share with you where I’m sourcing those items. It’s kindof my segway to letting you know I’m diving into One Room Challenge later this week and won’t be talking about the bathroom for another two weeks.

So where do you buy global inspired and sourced bathroom accessories? Let’s chat…

The ring of “Handmade in Guatemala” has a really cool sound, right? And you may be baffled why you can jump on Amazon and find really cool gems for reasonable prices only to find them elsewhere for a whole lot more. Is it a joke? Are the more expensive ones a rip off?

I promise not to make this whole post one big ethics speech, but I do want to point out that the “bargain” globally made items are more than likely made with slave and/or other forms of forced labor. Our buying power is strong and supporting fair trade companies is a really big step towards equality in the world. If it’s not “Made in the USA” or made in another company with clear and enforced labor laws, business owners care about money and you should know that your dollar supports the unfair treatment of people.

1. Artisan Connect (now merged with Nest)

That’s why I’ve really enjoyed perusing Artisan Connect. I stumbled onto this site when looking for Le Souk Ceramique for sale. They do exactly what their name implies, they’re the connecting force between artisans and us. Here’s an excerpt from their “Impact” page:

“We source exclusively from organizations that provide fair wages and social services to their artisans and the communities where they live, promoting the broader goals of empowerment, inclusion and self-esteem.”

Here are a few items you can find in stores like West Elm and Madewell:

Peruvian Wall Mirrors at West Elm

Reclaimed Textile Throw Pillow at Madewell (partnered with Nest)

Asena Area Rug at Jaipur Living

2. Etsy

Looking for more selection or something specific? Everyone’s favorite handmade and vintage retailer is a great place to look. Vintage is my favorite because you can find really unique mirrors, wall art and textiles. And handmade is fantastic for supporting artist. Handmade towels and soaps are some of the best you’ll use!

I’ve admitted to having a soap problem in the past. One of shops I discovered at the Coastal Virginia Home and Garden Show is Symphl Creations and they even made vegan soaps so they get a huge recommendation from me. But any reputable shop on Etsy is going to be a fantastic alternative to buying chemical laden soaps at the drugstore. And you’ll support someone’s craft!

And who doesn’t love a candlelit bath? One of the Etsy shops I discovered through GlobeIn is Sundos and I did because of a candle I received in one of my boxes. It smelled beautiful and did everything I wanted from a candle and it’s organic, fair trade and no GMO. Winning!

3. GlobeIn

And speaking of GlobeIn, they’re also a fantastic resource for bath products. I pay for an Artisan box monthly subscription service and each month is a different theme.

The main point of the service is the subscription service. It’s a curated box that supports remote artisans and farmers. Every box includes a handwoven basket and a few other items specially chosen for their support of small artisans around the world. A little booklet is included each month that explains where the finds came from and information about the person behind the product.

50% off 1st Box on any 3-month “GlobeIn Premium Subscription Box” – with code “TRYUS50”

But there’s also “the shop” where you can buy items from past boxes as well as other items that haven’t been included in a box. Like, body lotion, soaps, shampoos, towels, makeup cases, and more.

4. Anthropologie

Anthro has got the classy boho thing down. And a lot of their pieces are influenced by the patterns, styles and crafts of other countries and especially artisans. Mixing a piece or two or a lot with your existing decor or decor from the other sources is an easy way to get a gathered look.

  • Anthropologie Artist Collabs – supporting a diverse group of artists
  • Eco Friendly & Sustainable Textiles – organic, eco fabrics, artisan-made

I’m pretty heart eyed emoji stricken for their shower curtains. But their towels rods and soap dishes are also really beautiful. They’ve pretty much got everything you’ll ever need to decorate a bathroom but even with their massive inventory, I still say it’s best to source from multiple places since it’ll give your space a more real life look than if it were all sourced from the same space.

5. World Market

No global decor source list would be complete without including WORLD market. Right? It’s in the name! This store can get pretty addicting to walk around. I have better luck going in store than online because so many items are for purchase in store only. But with departments clearly laid out and all the awesomeness in one building, it’s worth the drive for me.

I especially like their bathmats, but their towels are also stunning. They also have good candles to choose from, too. Oh, and I love the soap dish I included below. Like, love that thing.

6. Home Depot

I’m throwing this one in as a bonus because they’ve really been on top of the encaustic tile look alikes. And since those tiles are the absolute must to stay on top of your home decor trends, I figured I’d include my three faves as part of this resource for globally inspired and sources bathroom decor 😉

Vintage Bohemian Spring Home Tour

March 22, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hello! Today I’m giving you a little glimpse into how we do Spring around here. Most rooms are chaos right now (bathroom on the tail end of a renovation, kitchen getting a facelift, dining room just started furnishing and decorating, and all bedrooms are storage/dumping grounds right now. In a house with this much chaos, the one room that is in useable and shareable shape is the space we need to enjoy. And it’s our living room.

bohemian eclectic living room tour

Our living room is a multifunctional space. It’s not a living room in any traditional sense of the room but more a family room. We watch TV here, we listen to music here, we eat in here, we play games with our little one here, I use that white chair to do a lot of my blogging from, and drink tea in the chairs by the large window. We do pretty much everything but cook and sleep in this space.

Hopefully once we finish the dining room we can remove the eating responsibility from this room. And move some of the games/arts and crafts, too. Right now I’ve simplified this space as much as possible, but kept as much seating and storage as possible. We keep the large carpeted space open for play and dancing. Anyone else find themselves dancing a whole lot more with Spring’s arrival?

I’ve switched out the heavier throw blankets for lighter ones and swapped candles from cinnamon to lighter fragrances like mint and citrus.

And I don’t think any proper Spring tour would be complete without flowers somewhere. I like to get out and go on walks to the beach when the weather allows and I pick wild flowers along the way. But the weather hasn’t been forgiving enough yet for that so these store bought blooms worked.

My decor doesn’t change a whole lot with the seasons. The biggest change for me is the removal of holiday decor and thankfully that’s been packed away for a minute. It’s mostly taking the time to make sure the space is working for us in the current moment. With less hot cocoa and more dancing, a table in front of the sofa is no longer needed. With less cold days than warm, we’re needing fewer heavy blankets. And with the front door open to let in the cool Spring breeze, I moved my little one’s toys to the other side of the room.

What changes do you find yourself making as the weather changes? Do you find yourself using the rooms of your house differently as the seasons change?
