Addressing things with the Bathroom

March 6, 2018 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to create my dream bathroom. It had to be done on a budget though. And after majorly messing up some do-it-yourself work, we had to pay pros to come in a do some things. Unfortunately, not all pros are created equal and I ended up a bit deflated with how everything came out. This month I’m going to get myself excited about this room again as I will be working on it for the Bathroom Primp and Pamper Blog Hop.

C964CD61-EE33-47C5-AE91-72B92130997B

I’d like to thank our host Jeweled Interiors for grouping us for this blog hop. It’s always motivating to have peers and a timeline to get something done! I’m excited to go in an make some changes that will make the space function better for us.

If you’ve come here from Maggie Overby Studios– greetings! I’m a fan of Maggie myself! She has the best pottery collection and I’m excited to see how she transforms her bathroom to be the stylish space she deserves. My name is Corinna and I am a bit of a hippie with a boho home. I’m a Gemini, I love textiles and I compost. Let me share what my bathroom looks like in the current…

It looks pretty great (for the size it is and with my taste in decor), but it’s really not in person. Here are some of the problems I want to address:

1. They grouted where there should be caulk.E841A9A3-27BE-4E6A-B366-E0FEE953EEFB

We’ve got this fun gap going on and water has seeped behind the paint because grout doesn’t flex. Caulk does. Bath tubs get really heavy when you fill them with bodies and water. They naturally shift some when that happens and that’s why you use a rubbery material like caulk. So I need to pull up all the grout where it shouldn’t be and put down caulk.

2. I miss having a hand held shower nozzle.

64FA57FA-80B8-4E7E-A57F-7A00C8F0144E

They make cleaning walls of tile so much easier. And sometimes my kid jumps in the bath with me and a secondary way to spray soap out of my hair would be a first world perk for sure.

3. I need a skinnier vanity

0CA14128-114F-443B-8DE5-692492B5847A

When we bought the house, it has a hideously gigantic vanity. It’s a very narrow bathroom and the clearance to get to the toilet behind the tub is tight. I’m tired of doing a shimmy to get back there. This vanity was an improvement, but it’s time to find the smallest depth vanity in the world. Wish me and my budget good luck ????????

4. I need new towels

CC7FAA07-06D7-411B-8898-6582BA6B19CC

I have peshtemals but they aren’t very cozy. I want pretty and plush towels. It’s slightly function but mostly a form request for this one.

Beyond that? I’d really like to paint. Really need to upgrade the window. And I want to put a cabinet above the toilet. But those things aren’t on the short list of musts. I’ll see if time and money permit to get those things done, too.

So what are my blogging pals doing to their bathrooms? Let’s check them out! Next on the Hop is My Eclectic Nest

Boho Shower Curtains

September 18, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

budget boho style

I’m back again for another installment of my budget boho series where I take a single item we would use in the decorating of a space and I show you all the available budget options for a variety of different styles of boho. Previously we covered budget friendly ways to bring suzani into the home. Today we will cover some beautiful boho shower curtains.

I believe choosing a shower curtain is so very important. You should spend a bit of time ensuring the one you choose will bring the right impact to the space. Because at the end of the day, it’s one of only a few ways to bring a textile experience to the space.

I’ve been using a tapestry that I cut to fit the width of the shower opening but It’s too long and starting to get discolored from getting stomped on/soaked and enduring the regular life a 5 year old throws at things. So I’m looking at switching out ours for one that is waterproof. I could throw the tapestry in the wash, but reviews say it removes the gold finish. I think it’s about time for change then.

Whether you’re the jungle vibing bohemian, the hippie bohemian, the ethereal bohemian or the global loving chic, I’ve hopefully included something you’re going to love here.

If you’ve got a bit more spending money, these shower curtains lend something a little extra special, plus they support artists directly.  I also feel like some of these have a more anthro feel to them and are unique.

If you’re not yet using a printed shower curtain, you’re missing out on an opportunity to bring style to the space. Bring a splash of color, a touch of pattern or choose a curtain that extends the vibe from the rest of your home. Boho shower curtains are specifically made for wet spaces and most are designed to resist mold growth, too. So where we would go crazy with whatever we want for curtains anywhere else in the home, these are perfect for what they’re sold for. I’m excited to get a new shower curtain in my bathroom and will show pictures as soon as it arrives!

If you’ve got a fabulous shower curtain, or upgrade yours to something cute soon, share pics with #showmeyourboho so I can see them!

➡️ Save these boho shower curtain ideas for now and later to your bathroom ideas Pinterest board.

➡️ Tag your gal/guy/roommates in a Facebook post hinting at for a new boho shower curtain.

Statement Bathroom Decor: Lanai Mirror

April 2, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Statement Mirrors. We put them in every room of those house. Statement mirrors are popularly used above buffets, behind sofas, over dressers and fireplace mantles. But one place I don’t often see a statement mirror is in the bathroom. And I find that fascinatingly odd because the mirror is the one and only necessary art piece in the room. Especially if you own your house, I have to give you the biggest encouraging thumbs up to go for the mirror of your design dreams. Because you can always take it with you when you move and use it in your new bathroom or another room.

Tip!

Ditch the complicated gallery wall. Go with a sophisticated large scale mirror to fill your wall space.

Previously in my bathroom I had a statement mirror. It was a moroccan style mirror and it’s gorgeous. I’m definitely not getting rid of it, just using it elsewhere in the house. It just didn’t have the “wow” factor the space really needed. So when a PR rep reached out to me to see if I would be interested in reviewing the Lanai Mirror from Serena & Lily, I restrained myself from saying “heck yes!” and agreed in a slightly more professional manner. The mirror was sent to me free of charge. I want to disclose that up front.

the more you know

So, here are my thoughts:

This mirror is heavy. And as a result, it needs to be packaged well to prevent it from being damaged in transit. Thankfully, the mirror came packaged in a careful and thoughtful manner. All of the bamboo that sticks out had specially shaped pieces of foam around them to ensure the mirror truly stayed in place and cushioned on it’s way here.

So these babes aren’t doing as well of a job at concealing my paint fail but maybe they’re being that helpful friend, encouraging me to Get. It. Done. Already. Like, really, the easiest thing I need to fix. Lazy city. Lol. I opted to move the Palm into the living room. ? it survives! I really, really want it to thrive! Rainy day over here. What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods? #showmeyourboho #eatcraftdiy

A post shared by Corinna | Hampton Roads, VA (@adesignerathome) on Mar 31, 2017 at 8:43am PDT

But really, that’s the boring stuff. If you want to know what I think of a $400 mirror, you probably want to know about the mirror, amiright? Like I said, it’s heavy. And that’s because the bamboo is real, lacquered bamboo. It is not plastic, it is not dried out, hollowed out, cheap pieces of bamboo. The lattice, interlocking design goes overtop a single piece of mirror. It’s not a bunch of small mirrors cut to fit in all the little cavities. I was very, very dissapointed with a mirror I bought from a popular flash sale site years ago that did that. When the cheaper route is taken and the mirror is not solid with the design resting overtop it, the image in the mirror is distorted. Plus, all those extra grooves make dust collection inevitable and impossible to clean. Also, the backing is more than just cheap MDF stapled on. This mirror is quality.

New mirror vibes ✌?✌ #showmeyourboho

A post shared by Corinna | Hampton Roads, VA (@adesignerathome) on Mar 28, 2017 at 5:15pm PDT

It’s really freaking pretty. Like, you guys. Really. It’s a warm and lively raw bamboo finish. The mirror itself is of really good quality. The interlocking bamboo pieces are done in a way that looks seamless (and they’re spliced and connected in a way that it won’t ever come loose).

Oh, it can also be hung vertically and horizontally. There is strong hardware on the back to hang it both ways.

Would I buy this mirror? Yes. I have spent this amount of money on a mirror before. And I absolutely, in my mirror buying experiences, beleive this to be worth the money.

Shop

Now, I’m not a salesman. But if a tropical vibe is your thing and you’re in the market for a gorgeous mirror, you can buy it here. I couldn’t find where they participate in rebate sites like Ebates.com, but when I went looking for coupon codes, I found that they have a refer a friend program. So if you’d like 20% off (that’s almost $80 off!), here’s the special link. And you can sign up to refer friends as well and get rewarded (I’m not sure what the reward is yet since that part was vague when I got the link). Then once you’re on the site you can just search “Lanai Mirror.” Either way you shop, if you shop, it’s a good mirror that I think a lot of you would like.

How I Organize My Bathroom

February 21, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Renovating a bathroom is a lot of fun. But when the process is over and you’re actually living in it, that’s when you truly discover what kinds of things make your bathroom work for you. For me, discovering our best storage and organizational needs took some time. I teetered back and forth on some solutions I’d thought up. But, for quite a while now things have been unchanged. Now that our bathroom functions well for us, I thought I’d share just how I organize my bathroom to give you some ideas to try for yours.

If you’ve got any good bathroom storage tips, be sure to leave them in the comments below. I’m always looking for new things to try to make living life as enjoyable as possible.

13 Vintage Must Haves For Your Boho Bathroom

February 17, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

white painted wicker cabinet with baskets, thrifted containers to hide all of the bathroom essentials

global bohemian bathroom decorated

So far you guys have seen bits and pieces of my bathroom. I haven’t shared the whole space yet because there’s still a few final touches I’m dragging my feet on but the bathroom is functioning and all our things are organized. As I put away my toothbrush and deodorant away each day, I have a small spark of joy because even the small things in the space are beautiful. It may seem shallow or you may totally get it, but being surrounded by beautiful things makes me happy. In case your bathroom could use some beautifying in it’s storage, I’ve got you covered with my favorite ways of storing all the bathroom things.

Bohemian Style Bathroom Accessories

  1. Lidded Woven Basket Hamper

Opt for lidded woven baskets instead of plastic or dinky metal frame with linen bag hampers for tossing your laundry into. If you keep a laundry basket in your bathroom, use something cozy and fitting with the decor. It’s a space you see frequently and shouldn’t be reserved for “utilitarian” visual clutter.

2. Matchbox Storage

Do you utilize the whole light a match for number 2s? Kick boring match boxes to the curb and put the matches out loud and proud in a match holder. They come in a variety of materials and designs. A perfect whimsical touch that’ll match your decor.

3. Vintage Bathroom Accessories

Speaking on whimsy, I love using “bathroom” specific items in their vintage form as decor. Like vintage perfume bottles. I figure some farmhouse style bathrooms manage to use vintage laundry boards and old buckets for hand towel storage. And it looks cool and enhances the decor. I think the same can be done for a boho bathroom, too.

4. Hang Your Towels

Hang your towels in style. Enough said.

5. Beautiful Vintage Mirrors

I shared an array of rustic boho mirror options the other day, but here are some beautiful vintage ones to consider as well! Tiles, carvings, and ornate details are the key to a fabulous bohemian bathroom.

6. Chic Magazine and Book Storage

Try instituting a “no phone in the bathroom rule” and encourage book or magazine reading instead. I know my house with it’s one bathroom could benefit from speeding up the amount of facebook scrolling that happens and maybe yours could, too 😉

7. Soap Dish

I love to use bar soap. They’re so easy to change out and there’s a billion ones to choose from. I love that it’s super easy to find really great handmade bars of soap, too. So a unique soap dish is necessary for my bathroom design.

8. Hanging Planters

And while we’re at it. Plants are necessary to any space I design. But since bathrooms are generally notorious for little surface and floor space, use brass wall mounted planters for some plant babies.

9. Stylish Tissue Boxes

Can’t forget to make our tissue boxes blend in with the space as well. We’re all advertised enough to already, wouldn’t you say? I don’t need my bathroom to be a *insert name of tissue brand here* ad.

10. Deck Out The Space Above The Toilet

If you’re lucky like myself, a linen closet, large vanity and free standing storage cabinet is enough storage for your bathroom. Go decorative above the toilet with pretty shelves and cabinets instead of the bulky cabinet.

11. Display Life’s Daily Necessities

Display life’s necessities on vintage trays.

12. Trinket Boxes

And we always need a place to put little things like jewelry, incense, lip balm and the like. I personally love using small brass “cricket cages” to burn incense cones in!

13. Bath Rugs

Oh, and whatever you do, avoid cheap bath rugs at all costs. Really, there are so many other options and they’re beautiful, have history, are interesting and have lasted for longer than a bath rug from the department store will last.

Rustic Boho Bathroom Mirror Sources

Rustic Boho Bathroom Mirrors- get the global style look

Making over a bathroom can be a lot of fun. If you’re working with a budget that allows you to change out cosmetic stuff, either just that or in conjunction with other changes, it opens up a whole world of possibilities in channeling your style into the space.

Going with what you love can be scary when it comes to things like tile because resale value lingers in the back of most renovating homeowners’ minds. But a mirror? You can swap out your mirror for something basic that you won’t mind leaving behind when the time comes to move.

Because of that, you should choose to buy a mirror in a style you’ll love. That compliments the rest of your home and that will really make your space feel custom to you. That’s what I did! And I don’t regret it. I can take my gorgeous mirror with me wherever I move and it can work in multiple rooms.

That’s the key to investing in decor. But that’s not the point of today’s entry. Today, I want to share with you mirrors I’ve found that would look right at home in a rustic boho bathroom.

Tip!

Provided you have a bathroom ventilated the way it should be, you don’t (and shouldn’t) use a mirror labeled “bathroom.” Just avoid that section. Those mirrors are basic and overpriced. You’ll find many more styles in the decor section of home improvement stores.
