Boho Vintage Living Room Tour Sources

Boho Vintage LIving Room Source List

Hey There!

I’m so happy you’re here for my Boho Vintage Living Room‘s Source post. Granted, a lot of the pieces in the room are thrifted. But, I’ve had a lot of interest in many of the items that are actually store bought. I think it’s a perfect way to decorate a space because you get the unique look of not looking like your space jumped right out of Target (though that’s not bad either) and you still get to add in trendy items as they appear on the shelves. So let’s dive into all the things that you can buy from my Living Room if your heart so desires 😉

frames marbled paper and a flamingo! eclectic at it's best!

Many of the Art on the walls I’ve made. I’m still working on sharing the tutorials for those DIY’s here on the blog, so please do make sure you’re following along via email, bloglovin’, or you other favorite ways of following your favorite blogs so you can see the updates on those tutorials when they’re posted!

Flamingo Print– I adore this print. My friend Vanessa owns and operates the Etsy shop, Lochness Studio. You can now order instant downloads from her shop which I think is a really cool feature!

Ukulele– eBay. I can’t really say a whole lot about this. I had a craving for a cute pink ukulele one day and found one on eBay. I guess the lesson here is, if you want something, the internet has it.

Gold Mirror– I bought this mirror from One Kings Lane. Because the items on the OKL site change often, this mirror is no longer available. But, if you wanted to sign up, you can use my link for a $15 credit for purchases of $30 or more.  Or you can check out Target’s cute selection of mirrors. Because we never need another excuse to go to Target, amiright?

Baskets– All of the baskets in this room are from Target. The blue and pink rimmed ones are/were from the Threshold line and the golden/black and jute one that my mass cane hangs out in was from the Nate Berkus line.

3 Cube Wood Cubby– It’s actually a wine bottle holder from Target’s Threshold line. I think they’re phasing these out right now and there’s a few coupon codes showing for it, too. I like that it gives a bit more visual interest to my smaller items. But I’m sure it works well for wine, too.

Large faux teak Picture Frame– Also from Target. I don’t believe they have this frame anymore either. But I would definitely recommend perusing their clearance end caps whenever you’re there for really unique frames.

Himalayan Salt Lamp– My lamp was a gift to me from my family, but I have several in my Amazon “Save for later” section because I love mine and want one for every room of my house. You can check out the assortment Amazon has here.

White Garden Stool– I picked mine up from Lowe’s because it’s metal, not ceramic (i.e. breakable by a toddle) and it was a really good deal!

Teal Rug– This rug is gorgeous. And it’s soft, easy to clean, and hasn’t stained once with my son’s several spills a day phase he’s going through. It’s Target :). You can buy it here– take advantage of sales and promo codes. I remember buying mine for $170.00 for the 7′ x 10′.

Candle Sconces– On either side of the TV. I found them on a Target clearance end cap after debating for a long time over buying between 2 other way more expensive ones. Definitely gotta peruse those endcaps!

Gold Arch Lamp– The lamp was not gold when I bought it! It’s this lamp from Amazon and I coated it with grecian gold rub n buff.

Navy & Jute Floor Pouf– I picked up the floor pouf from Target. Their selection is massive, but it doesn’t look like there’s any of this particular style left.

Teal Planter– From Lowe’s. It’s a really pretty deep teal color.

Mongolian Fur Pillow– Burlington Coat Factory. They’ve got loads of super beautiful pillows and I never wouldn’t have know if it weren’t for Instagram (i ♥ Instagram!)

Soda Crate– Etsy.

Mexican Blanket– 7-11 convenience store. (no joke!)

There’s everything! I hope you’ve found this Source Post helpful and interesting. If there’s anything not listed that you’re curious about, leave a comment and I can let you know what the deal is. If it’s furniture, you can check that out in my All About Used Furniture post. Have a wonderful day and thank you for being here!

Crushing On: Lush Boho Houseplants

July 17, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

crushing on lush boho houseplants in interiors inspiration

Hey There!

I am so excited to be chatting here today about what I’m crushing on. Houseplants have been a life long obsession of mine. It’s also been a life long quest of mine to keep them alive! While I still may not be a pro at keeping houseplants alive and thriving, I am at least mediocre now. Beautiful spaces featuring the use of lush houseplants inspires me to get better at caring for plants.

I find it especially interesting and charming when plants are in kitchens and bathrooms. Those spaces can feel cold and sterile, lacking the vibrancy that plants bring to a room. Plants add something special to an ambiance of a room. Personally, I don’t like to spend a whole lot of time in a kitchen. But homes featuring lots of plants in a kitchen draw me in and I actually want to be in those spaces. Plants are the friend that always listens.

The best way to get the most impact with houseplants is to cluster them. Especially for those of us who haven’t had the best of luck and are working with smaller plants, grouping them together makes them visually bigger. Bigger is better, right? Plus it’s just so boho chic, who can’t love that?

It also helps to have cute containers for them to live in. Terracotta is perfect in a lot of the spaces featured because it plays well with wood tones and vintage/boho decor. Planters really are as limited as your imagination though. If you’d like to see a post featuring unique plants, leave me a comment below letting me know and I will happily get that together.

Here are a couple planters on Amazon I’m crushing on:

If you’re struggling to keep houseplants alive, here are a few of my all time favorite, can’t kill plants: Pothos, Sansevieria, Peace Lilly. I can do a more in depth post on fabulously hard to kill house plants, too. Just let me know if you want to see that (really, just tell me what you want me to talk about, and if I have anything to say about it, I’ll get you a post STAT.).

That’s all for today internet! If you’re reading, leave me a comment! It helps so I know whether or not I’m talking to crickets! Stay Rad.

How I Made It: Gold Bamboo Curtain Rods

July 16, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

gols painted bamboo mimic the look of gilded bamboo

One of my favorite pieces that I made for our living room when we first started working on it are the gold bamboo curtain rods. It’s something I always knew I wanted in the space and I think they just get better and better the more my decor style evolves.

I really enjoy a natural element like bamboo glitz up. It’s sometimes the perfect little dose of hollywood regency a room needs. I’m a big fan of gilded bamboo. So if you are too, I’m sharing how I made my gold bamboo curtain rods.

Years and years ago I picked up very long red stained bamboo sticks from Pier One. I’ve hung onto them all this time even though I tend to steer clear of red in my home because I love the look of bamboo and knew I’d end up using them for something. I’ve seen short bamboo rods for sale at dollar stores before and if you live in a urban to suburban area, you may even be able to find someone begging you to take it for free from their backyard (bamboo is an aggressive plant, just so you know!), they’ll just need to be dried out first.

Because mine were already stained and sealed, I needed to give them one hell of a sand down. It took a while but I knew I needed to get rid of as much of the red as possible or I’d spend a fortune on gold spray paint.

Sand bamboo rod finish and any stain down

Once they were sanded and cleaned, it was just a matter of spray painting them. Our garage has a workshop addition with rods in random places, so I use them to slip rods onto when spray painting.

Spray painting bamboo rods

The hardware was created using L brackets, machine screws, and one hole straps. Really easy! I spray painted them the same gold color.

bracket equation using hardware store supplies for easy custom curtain rod brackets

The contrast between the gold bamboo and crochet curtains makes my heart happy. I love a balance of masculine and feminine details in a space, it just makes it feel so cohesive and harmonious.

How I Made It: Dimensional Designed Planters

July 14, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

I love plants, how about you?

I like the look of adding plants to my decor and I think it does a lot for most interior design types. Planters can get expensive and the budget friendly ones aren’t always… pretty or interesting to look at it. You can take a boring terracotta planter and transform it in so many ways though. I’m going to share with you one way I’ve jazzed up terracotta planters that I picked up from the dollar store.

Southwestern and geometric patterns are hot right now and I love what they bring to a space, but these could be made to have any design on them.

I began by cutting out shapes from foam that I felt has a Southwestern or Aztec feel to them. That meant lots of rectangles, triangles, crosses and variations of those shapes.

cut out shapes from dollar store foam sheets

Then, I places them onto a tabletop covered with paper and sprayed the backs with spray adhesive. If you’re not comfortable using spray adhesive, hot glue will work but may leave bumps beneath the shapes, and a good glue stick would work well, too.

spray backs of foam with spray adhesive

Once the spray adhesive went tacky, I played around with the shapes, layered some and created a design that I loved.

At this point I was very tempted to leave the planters as is. The neon against the terracotta is just so fun!

part 1 of original designs

But I’d bought the paint to use for this project and knew that I’d grow tired of the neon (It’s just not really my style). So then I took them out to the garage and sprayed them all with spray primer.

Once the spray primer had time to dry, I just brushed on the paint. I followed up with another 2 coats, allowing each coat to dry fully.

I had a lot of fun playing around with these planters in creation and still do have a lot of fun with them. This is definitely a DIY I will do again with some variation in the future. If you create a version of your own, let me know by tagging me on Facebook or Instagram.

I was inspired to create these after reading the lovely ladies behind A Beautiful Mess blog’s book “A Happy Handmade Home.” If you’re in a creative rut, definitely check this book out! It’s full of wonderful ideas that require little to no skill!

I’ve since painted a couple of them copper. I love the look! I definitely think it’s worth playing around with different paints to get the look you want with these.

Used Living Room Furniture

July 13, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

how to score cheap and cute second hand furniture

We all know that used furniture is the cheapest way of furnishing a home. Free is actually cheapest, but there aren’t many of us that can say that all the pieces we’ve ever wanted have just fallen into our laps. So we’ll just go with second hand furniture being cheapest (for what we want). The smaller the budget, the harder it becomes to get our hands on pieces we covet, but I’m going to share a little bit with you today my process for getting my hands on used furniture, some things I’ve learned to expect, and what I’ve scored that’s second hand in my living room (and spoiler alert – It’s a lot!).

How I Score Cute and Cheap Furniture:

I set a budget, stick to the budget, search multiple sources and don’t get too picky. It can be easy to see a piece that we’ve been searching for but see it’s twice as much as what we know we should be paying for it. Not that it’s not worth twice as much, but that we have a limit to what we can afford and we need to remain realistic while looking at things we want. Keep looking or attempt to negotiate if you’re brave. And if they won’t come down, go back to looking.

I check out a few local thrift stores a few times a month, check in on the OfferUp app, and have alerts set up on Craigslist. That way I’ve covered more ground and have a better chance of finding what I want.

And then I try to be as broad as possible. If I’m looking for a mid century style dresser, I try to broaden my search to include things like “old” “vintage” and “wood.” People don’t know what they have more often that not. Those are the people you want to buy from. And if you’re looking for a particular style of mid century, you’re limiting yourself, so be prepared to wait.

What to Expect with Second Hand Furniture:

Sometimes thrifted furniture can have a smell. Most smells can come out though so I make sure it’s not coming from upholstery, it’s not due to it’s condition (bad smell from mold for example), and I have an idea of what I’m going to do to fix it before I buy it. Most pieces I’ve picked up smell like normal furniture after a wipe down. Others I’ve had to leave in the garage for a couple weeks but then it’s fine again.

Upholstery may need replacing or a professional cleaning. You’ll still score a fabulous piece for cheap, but bear in mind that this also comes out of your pocket so budget for it.

Spiderwebs are abundant. If you’re squeamish, try to find someone that would love to do you the favor of brushing them off for you in exchange for lemonade (or whatever, I love lemonade). But make sure there are no bug eggs because you don’t want to introduce critters to your precious home.

My Living Room’s Used Furniture:

My Sofa

have a seat! the puppy doesn't bite and I promise it's okay to move the pillows!

I found my sofa through a vague Craigslist ad. My sweet friend went with me and let me use her truck to pick it up. When we arrived at the address I was sure I’d arrived at the wrong place because it was a church! But it was the right place, and priced at $25!

My End Table

thrifted craigslist side table perfect toy storage with pretty brass details

The first piece I found through OfferUp was this end table. I love the brass detail and trim on the doors. That combined with a ton of storage within sold me. I paid $20, but it’s a solid piece with good detail so it’ll last a long time.

My Coffee Table

have a seat! the puppy doesn't bite and I promise it's okay to move the pillows!

This retro little table has such a fun story. I found it through Craigslist, as I do with most pieces. The seller wanted $20 and I was quite alright with that since I know there are loads of resalers in the area who would also snatch it up at that price but to resell. The lady and her husband were some of the nicest people I’ve met! She mentioned she had several other people contact her but followed through with us because we contacted first. Seriously, that never happens. And she sent me home with several of her mature houseplants!

My Arm Chair

Entering a casually boho eclectic decorated space the living room of a 1950's brick ranch

Everyone loves this piece. I love this piece. And for $50 it was one hell of a deal. The upholstery needs some TLC but I’m actually happy about that because I have a destructive little boy. Later in life I’ll have it reupholstered, but for now it’s stylish and in a condition that can take a few pen marks.

My Bar Cart

gold vintage bar cart full of lush plants the perfect way to use a bar cart with little kids around!

This was a mother’s day gift for me in 2014. The seller wouldn’t budge on price but it wasn’t a terrible deal at $120. The gold is in pretty good condition and I love it as a plant stand.

My Credenza/Media Console

vintage credenza gone media console looks so good with all those rescued brown glass bottles!

The second most expensive piece in our living room in this credenza. I found it through a Craigslist ad but it led me to a thrift store. It’s beautiful and it great condition. The caning inserts are all untouched and the wood has very few scratches. It has provided so much storage as the left 2 sides has drawers and the right 3 have a single shelf. This piece was $95.

My Wicker Chair

wicker low back peacock chair

I like chairs. But who doesn’t? Hashtags like #moschairjunkie and #chairfeaturefriday prove that! I snatched this chair up for $20. It needs minor cosmetic work but I am such a sucker for imperfection so I’ve left it.

My Wicker Plant Stand

rattan wicker foot stool used as a plant stand

For $10 this slightly saggy foot stool became a fabulous little plant stand. I love that it raises up my thrifted plant inside it’s thrifted planter enough to be a statement.

My Elephant Plant Stand

white elephant plant stand stacked lucite lamp, be still my heart!

I scored this white elephant plant stand through a Craigslist ad for a thrift store for $30. It was originally glazed ceramic with hand painted designs. I wanted white at the time so I painted it, but I may strip the spray paint off one of these days when I stop being lazy about it. My taste changed a bit but I still love it as is. The foot stool beside it was also scored through Craigslist, for $10.

bentwood rocker paired with mexican blanket serape. love the contrast!

And finally, this bentwood rocker came home with me because it was listed with a bentwood foot stool that I wanted but the seller wouldn’t sell them separately. So for $50, I’ve got both. I like the rocker but don’t love it so I’ll get around to cleaning it up for resale soon.

I hope you’ve found this post interesting and useful! What kinds of furniture have you scored thrifting? Are you shy from buying upholstered pieces or do you go for it?

If you have questions about second hand furniture, leave them below and I’ll answer them as best I can!

Give this post a share! Your friends will love it and it helps me out a lot!

Crushing On: Cottage and Loft Like Living Spaces

July 10, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey There Again Internet!

As I’m introducing myself, my home, my hopes and dreams, I think it’s a lot of fun to share with you what inspires me. The kind of homes I gravitate towards on Apartment Therapy and Design*Sponge Home Tours are the lofty/cottagey/cute downtown apartmentey types of homes. I’m a total charm junkie and those kinds of places are full of it. If you love to oggle and drool over charming homes, here are a few you’ll have to check out:

Kristen & Michelle’s Modern Bohemian Home

This home is a really cute one. Totally fits the cottage bill. I love the bright colors of the exterior and the front porch. This little home is the epitome of “the Good kind of cozy.”

51fdabbe74c5b6725b002870._w.1000_h.1000_s.fit_

The shot that most drew me in when viewing their tour on Apartment Therapy was this shot in their kitchen. That vintage stove! Be still my beating heart! I also find the little steel microwave cart incredibly charming for some reason. I just love when things fit together well but are obviously not intentionally put together. Any other home would likely have a sliver of counter top here, but nope, pump up that charm factor with an adorable microwave cart instead.

Sasha’s Silver Lake Bohemian Bungalow

Have I mentioned how much of a charm junkie I am? A home with vintage character is just so enjoyable to look at. I find arched doorways and wood beams visually interesting. I just enjoy looking at them. Sasha’s home does. not. disappoint. Her home tour on Apartment Therapy oozes with all the good things.

1P8A3882web

A home like this makes the perfect back drop for vintage furniture and bohemian accessories. It’s like the best sensory roller coaster you could ever go on. Texture meets character. It’s a beautiful thing. Check out how the wood tone in the floors matches those stunning beams. It all feels so cohesive.

1P8A3877web

Carrie & Hal’s Modern Bohemian Home

If you love mid century modern furniture you have to check this tour out. Seriously, if you only go on to check out the rest of just one tour, check this one out. It has a lot of the same features that I swoon over- arched doorways, french doors, vintage bathroom tile. But, the furnishings are what mid century modern furniture junkie’s dreams are made of. Well, I can at least say they’re what my furniture dreams are made of.

5362fdaedbfa3f0670006402._w.1000_h.1000_s.fit_

The room i felt especially drawn to in this home is the sun porch/sitting porch/maybe an addition to the home/home office space. I need this space in my house. Isn’t it beautiful?

5362fd66dbfa3f0680005ae5._w.1000_h.1000_s.fit_

I would love to be surrounded by all that beautiful sunlight, growing lush greenery. I know it would be so inspiring and motivating. With a limitless budget, I know exactly where I’d put my own study. I think placing a desk in front of any bright window would be inspiring and motivating, though. Maybe just not as much 😉

Natasha & Rob’s Super Smart Small Space

Amongst many other things that make my heart pitter patter, unusually small spaces are another one of those things. I find small space living fascinating. Especially when paired with this phenomenal brick wall with a charming fireplace. The home tour also boasts tons of style, too!

DSC_0475

The Home Where Snow White Grew Up

Well, isn’t that just a title that draws you in? The story is actually quite interesting, you can read all about it in the full house tour. So you basically assume it’s going to be some cute charming cottage in the middle of the woods, right? Not quite. I actually really, really like the simple details paired with the plants and furnishings.

63

No charm is lost on the way to the kitchen though. Old cabinets are incorporated into modern living, an arched doorway for an interesting and airy walk way, gleaming wood floors, and very retro red tile border. They make for a very cozy and welcoming home.

Lauren’s Warm and Light Chicago Condo

The windows and brick wall in this condo are to die for. Obviously all of these homes have something super swanky about them, but the windows in this particular home are incredible. These windows are huge and bring so much light into this space. A space that is beautifully decorated, too. Can’t hurt to oggle and envy those vintage pieces!

Bohemian Charm Meets Mid Century Modern In Sunny Florida

This home tour may not be lofty or cottagey, but I find it incredibly charm infused. I love the layers of textiles and collected furnishings. I think carefully curated pieces can create just as charming of a home as one with built in charm. Well… almost as charming. There’s just something that can’t be beat about built in charm.

I highly recommend that you click those links within each home tour’s section. These homes are so inspiring and I think you’ll really enjoy them! I pin all of my favorite home tours to this Pinterest board. So make sure you give it a follow so you can check out newer ones as I find them!
