How I Made It: Wall Mounted Clothing Planning System

September 18, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

DIY-clothing-valet-wall-mounted-outfit-planning-do-it-yourself-tutorial-dowel-rod-and-copper-fitting

Hey Guys!

I have been so excited to get this project together to share with you guys. This outfit planning wall organizer is fantastic for small spaces because it takes up vertical space (wall) instead of horizontal (floor). It doesn’t touch the floor so it’s a breeze to clean around. And it’s going to make your mornings easier because you can avoid the morning search-for-any-damn-thing-to-wear shuffle. Bonus: It’s really easy to make, chyea!

What You’ll Need:

(Totals are for 1 outfit planning unit, double for 2, triple for 3 and so on and so forth)
1x1/2″ Copper Cap
6x1/2″ 90 Degree Copper Elbow
3x1/2″ Copper Tee
2x5/8″ x 48″ Wood Dowel (You’ll end up with extra)
Circular Saw, Hand Saw, Any Saw
Super Glue
2x1/2″ 2 hole Copper Strap
Optional: Paint or Stain

DIY-clothing-valet-wall-mounted-outfit-planning-do-it-yourself-tutorial-dowel-rod-and-copper-fitting-system

Wall Mounted Clothing Planning System

If you’re going to paint or stain the dowel rods, do it before assembly. You’re probably reading that going, “duhhhh.” But trust me, I’ve rushed around so much that I didn’t think that part through before. So, friendly reminder, you can do your cuts first, but optionally stain and/or paint them before gluing them into the copper pieces.

Supplies for 2 outift planning wall organizers

I’ve got the cuts listed in the pic above with the supplies, but here they are:

Cuts For 1 Wall Mounted Outfit Planning Organizer

2 pieces that are 24 inches (or half of a 48 inch long dowel rod)

7 pieces that are 3 inches long (just under half of a 48 inch rod, so if you’re making 2, you’ll just need 1 more dowel rod)

Once the easy part is done, cutting and optionally painting/staining, it’s time for more easy! Assembly! You guys have probably caught on that I like video instead of typing things out. My skills are way elementary but this is really what assembly looks like.

Once assembled, you just need to attach it to the wall. If the holes for the straps won’t be going into studs, make sure to use wall anchors. Heavier items of clothing will pull the screws right through the dry wall.

Fun Copper and Wood Wall Mounted Outfit Planning System

And it should look something like this:

Zdiy-outfit-planning-vertical-wall-system-fall-outfit-planning-fashion-coral-painted-door-bohemian-bedroom-room-reveal

get your shoes up off the floor and onto the wall

plan outfits with shoes without the shoes on the floor and in the way or worse a trip hazard

display cute clothes and plan fab outifts in this DIY outfit planning wall organizer

Now you’re ready to get planning!

I had fun selecting outfits that I can’t wear right now because I work too much to wear cute things. But it makes me happy to see the outfits! Now that the photos are done, I’ll use the organizer more practically.

You could also use these in an entryway to hang jackets and hats, too! Or a bathroom for towels. Just omit the shoe holder portion if need be and add a second cap to the bottom end.

I hope you’ve found this post interesting and useful! If you did, please be sure to leave me a comment so I know you’ve visited and give it a share so your friends can check it out!

Thrift Score Thursday #81 + Contributor Post for Remodelaholic

September 17, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

boho-nomad-decorated-bohemian-style-space

Hey Guys!

It’s the most thrifty day of the week- Thursday! Before we jump into the fun and games of #ThriftScoreThursday, I needed to pop in this picture of a pretty amazing little space I threw together full of thrift scores with a recent DIY in the mix. I’m loving this suede embellished terracotta planter with a tribal inspired embellishment. I’m sharing the tutorial as well as the printable template for the tribal inspired design on Remodelaholic today. Go ahead and click to visit it (it’ll open in a new window) so you can check that out after you’re done reading here.

And now, let me share with you what I scored:

Little containers, little boxes, little baskets. They’re all amazing, amiright? Since I’ve got lots of tiny things that need to be stored away, I need lots of little places to put them. No, not really at all. Most of these little trinket containers will forever be empty but I just love them! I think they’re cute and so impractical they must all come home with me. Especially when they’ve got an interesting weave to it.

Or a cool design punched into the metal. I actually can think of a lot of practical uses for the brass one. Like burning incense or putting my jewelry in while I shower.

small-brass-chest-jewelry-incense-details small-brass-chest-jewelry-incense

Do you fall for these little containers, too? Or are they just impractical for your storage needs. (maybe I could store sugar packets in the little basket.. ideas are starting to flow!)

And now to spread some love for fellow thrifters and their amazing thrift scores, here are my featured picks from the feed:

This one is a dead giveaway. How could I not feature my friend Nicole (of Design It Vintage) and this Amazing Macrame find. It’s beautiful and I’m jealous. That’s the story of my life 😉 She also scored an amazing basket (this girl is my thrifting spirit animal, I tell ya).

How I Made It: Leather Sling Hanging Planter

September 16, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

diy-earthy-diy-leather-planter-sling

Hey guys!

Are you ready for another DIY from my bedroom? One necessity for me was plants. Lots of plants. It really uplifts my mood and makes me feel at ease to be around plants. I didn’t want to do anything as permanent as put in shelves (because lord knows I’ll only need to move them a month later) but I also didn’t want to crowd the existing surfaces with plants. So to keep the floor as clear as possible, I created this Leather (pleather) Hanging Planter Sling.

earthy diy leather planter sling

It’s really easy to make and you can totally do this so let’s dive into the tutorial!

(Bonus- You’re going to love the way this Leather Hanging Planter looks!)

Supplies:

Embroidery Floss and Needle

Two square pieces of pleather (leather will damage if any water sits on it, so be sure to go faux)

Cotton Rope

Scissors/Straight Edge/Craft Knife

How To Make It:

Cut out two squares from your pleather fabric.

cut out two pieces of pleather fabric into equal squares

Sew A Knot Through Each Corner.

sew a knot through each corner of the two pieces of pleather, backs facing one another

(backsides facing one another)

Stitch All Four Sides Together.

stitch around all four edges

Cut A Slit Just Large Enough To Pass The Rope Through and Stitch Around The Edges.

cut a slit just barely large enough to pass the rope through

Pass Rope Through The Slit and Tie Off A Knot.

stitch the edges of slit and tie knot to end of rope

Cut Off A Shorter Length Of Rope and Tie The Two Overlapping Pieces Together.

Tying a shorter length of rope over the longer 2 lengths of rope for extra balance and stability

Place An Adorable Plant Friend Onto The Center Of The Sling and Display!

This corner of my bedroom is totally giving me life right now. It always makes me smile! And yeah, I ended up changing out the plant. I LOVE the pothos. I have a hard time remembering to open the blinds in the morning and this resilient vine cuts me some slack.

Crushing On: Wall Hangings

September 14, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

9-uses-for-wall-hangings

Hey Guys!

Last week I shared a tutorial (with a video!) for a moroccan wedding blanket inspired wall hanging. It turned out beautifully and since posting it, I’ve had wall hangings on the brain. So I set out to find gorgeous inspirational spaces to share with you and tips for using wall hangings in your own home.

9-practical-uses-for-wall-hangings

9 Ways To Use A Wall Hanging

Centered Over A Dresser: Add symmetry to a space by centering a decorative wall hanging over a larger piece like a dresser.

AN INSPIRED, BOHEMIAN HOME IN THE CALIFORNIA DESERT Design*Sponge

To Accent A Space Within A Space: This desk space is defined by the fabric wall hanging hung behind it.

Display In A Collection: Create a gallery wall effect by grouping a few smaller wall hangings and throw in a complimentary piece or two in similar colors.

AN INSPIRED, BOHEMIAN HOME IN THE CALIFORNIA DESERT Design*Sponge

To Fill A Small Wall: Got a small wall? Fill it with an intricate wall hanging to add color, texture and interest to the space.

AN INSPIRED, BOHEMIAN HOME IN THE CALIFORNIA DESERT Design*Sponge

Add Height To Shorter Furniture Pieces: Tall and Short walls can benefit from this trick. A shorter piece of furniture can have big impact by hanging a large wall hanging above it.

Center Above A Bed to act as a Visual Headboard: Honestly, who needs a headboard nowadays? This cool wall hanging brings focus to the bed, which is the focus of the room traditionally.

To Make A Statement: Conversation piece, amiright?

Add A Pop Of Color: Tie in a pop of color by using wall hangings to pop the color throughout a space. It looks great against an otherwise neutral space.

To Share A Positive Message: Wall hangings with messages can bring a positive vibe to a space.

Add Texture & Interest Behind A Side Table: The wall hanging adds texture and looks interesting against the stark chrome lamp in front of it.

So now you’ve got all the ways you can use a wall hanging in your space. So go on and find one, or better yet, make one!

How to make White Art POP against White Walls

September 11, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

how-to-make-white-art-pop-against-white-walls-a-designer-at-home

Hey guys!

Sometimes I have this dilema. I love a color (or lack of color) so much that I use it everywhere. Like white. I use white everywhere right now because once upon a time I painted all my walls a very pretty turquoise and hated everything I put in front of it. But it’s really hard to get a white piece of art to show up against a white wall. Especially on camera (and to further that- a low end camera). It bothered me for a while until inspiration struck in the form of reading a blog that I love (VintageRevivals). I needed a barrier, or a “Frame” so to speak, for the art (my moroccan wedding blanket inspired wall hanging to be exact).

how-to-make-white-art-pop-against-white-walls

My kid was distracted with dad and the tv so I grabbed a paint brush, a cup, painters tape, threw some leftover paints together and mixed in some water for an “artsy feel” and got to work. I went simple with a rectangle to counter the circle in the wall hanging, but you could do a hexagon (I show you how to do that in my painted hexagon wall) or a circle (just do the first part of the hexagon from that video) or whatever.

taped-rectangle-with-painters-tape custom-mizing-wall-paints-in-a-cup

To get the “artsy” look I achieved here: Pour a dollop of 2 different paints (I used a yellow toned beige and a cool toned grey) into a cup. Add some water until liquidy but still opaque. Gently mix to keep some separation of the colors. Then just be sure all your brush strokes run in the same direction. Voila! Instant white art popping power.

paint-in-opposite-direction-of-tape-to-avoid-seepage streaky-artsy-painted-effect

If you’re diggin’ the wall hanging, come check out the post for that one. It’s rather easy to put together and so, so pretty. It’s inspired by moroccan wedding blankets. I would love to have one of my own one day but this wall hanging is way cheaper.

I hope you’ve found this idea to be helpful and interesting. Give this post a share if you’d like, it helps me out a lot.

How could you use this technique?

Thrift Score Thursday #80

September 10, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

thrift score thursday11

Hey Guys!

Let’s chat thrifty finds today. It’s Thursday, which means I’ve got a thrifty find to share with you. And if you’ve got a thrifty find and an Instagram, tag a picture of it with #thriftscorethursday, because my cohosts and I also share features from the feed today and every Thursday. I’m first going to dive into an adorable new accessory I picked up for my living room.

I have an awesome little boy’s and girl’s club thrift store right around the corner from my house. It’s normally a mess, but I feel like I find the best stuff for the price I pay here. This last trip, I was prepared to leave empty handed until I saw this doll sized fanbacked chair. It had no price but they’re really cool about giving a good deal at the register. I kept it cool when she said, “50 cents, It’s broken so 50 cents.”

Dolls totally freak me out, but I have lots of small plants and I’m always looking for fun ways to display them. I have a lot of them on my vintage bar cart. And that’s definitely where this plant will go back and forth from so I can make sure it gets enough light.

gold vintage bar cart full of lush plants the perfect way to use a bar cart with little kids around!

And regardless of whether or not anything sits on the chair, I think it’s a fun textural piece that also works as a conversation starter (because I know few people in real life who dig these kinds of things). Once I get those IKEA Vittsjo shelves in here like I talked about when I discussed future plans for my living room, I’ll get it off the floor (same with the books :’D)
