Styled Vintage Nightstand

November 19, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey there, Guys!
Here on Thursdays we chat thrifty and this week I’ve got a fun little set up to share with you. You probably know that I prefer to save my #thriftscorethursday finds until I’ve had a change to utilize and style them. So I’ve been keeping the main event from this set up under wraps while I get things situated.
For the longest time, I’ve had the one cabinet beside my sofa and the other side has been pretty bare. It’s always felt visually heavy on the one side so it’s been on the “list of things I’m hunting for” to find another cabinet for the other side of the sofa. And, I found it!

Vintage thrifted end table cabinet styled with bohemian decor
And at a thrift store nonetheless. I normally have zero luck scoring furniture form thrift stores and obtain most pieces through Craigslist, but this one was in great condition and was listed for a great price at $15.
There are a lot of features that made this the perfect imperfect match for the other table. They’re both a similar wood tone, have the two door cabinet, are essentially the same height, and have details that compliment one another. The cane inserts on this one mimic the cane inserts of my credenza/media console.

VIntage Cabinet and Vinyl Sofa bohemian decorating family loved living room
PS, the dust is from the bathroom renovations! The whole house is coated 😉

Atop the table I have some of my favorite Home/Design books, a couple plants (that wood-look ceramic bowl is thrifted and the plant inside was a gift from a craigslist seller when we came to buy a piece of furniture), the gold tray I picked up from a different thrift store, and that mug is the latest mug I thrifted. Basically the coolest mug I’ve ever happened across and since I collect mugs, it had to come home. You’ll also spot one of the brass birds I scored ages ago.

I’ve been reading Emily Henderson’s book, “STYLED,” and have been so enjoying putting the tips and secrets she shares to use. I’m thrilled with the way the end table has turned out.
And because I’m sharing my own styled surface, I wanted to focus on sharing other styled shots from the #thriftscorethursday feed. It’s the best feed out there and full of great inspiration so make sure you’re checking it out and tagging your thrift scores.

Fabulous 6 Week Room Makeovers

November 17, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey Guys!

If you hadn’t already seen, the 6 week One Room Challenge ended last week. And how did I celebrate failing? I visited every single entry linked up. And while I do totally think you should take the time to visit every single entry, too, I also wanted to highlight and share my favorites because there’s just seriously great talent out there- seriously.

6weekroomtransformations

So let’s dive into my favorite 6 week room transformations:

claire-brody-designs-vintage-guest-room

Claire Brody Designs | Guest Room: The highlight of this space for me the ceiling. Not only an amazing color, but also such an interesting way of incorporating a paint color into a space. That, the light fixture, the furniture and the styling made this space an immediate win for me.

bedford-and-bloom-black-and-white-bathroom

Bedford & Bloom | Bathroom: I am not only floored that this space was completed in the 6 week timeframe (I did, after all, also tackle a bathroom and failed ridiculously), but I love the black on white on grey. It’s a sophisticated and rather timeless combination. Plus, those beveled subway tiles are a lot like the ones I’ve already drooled over before so it’s a no brainer- I love this space.

design-loves-detail-kids-camp-lodge-playroom

Design Loves Detail | Kid’s Space: This playroom is ridiculously cute. The highlight of the space is, of course, the slide- like how cool is that? But, there’s also so many other fun details to the space, too. The camp lodge theme is themey, but in the classiest way I could imagine with an RV play tent and plush campfire set.

olde-town-style-glamorous-gals-play-space

Olde Town Style | Playroom: The chandelier makes this space. Such a glamorous space, but yet it looks like so much fun to be in. And it shows you how you don’t have to have a giant play space to have a functional and pretty space. It’s truly pretty and admiration inducing. Being that I do have a girly bone in my body, I had to include this beautifully designed space.

black-and-white-holtwood-hipster-home-office

Holtwood Hipster | Home Office: I am not by nature a minimalist kind of person (it sortof goes against every boho bone in my body), but check this epic office out. The black and white are, again, classic and timeless, but I love how it’s broken up with all the coordinating art and the warmth of the gold. I can sense the creativity flowing in this space.

place-of-my-taste-living-room-boho-vintage-modern

Place Of My Taste | Living Room: Aniko practically stole my vision for a living room. I kid, but I do very much adore every element she brought into the space and I’ve been eyeing down that sofa for ages. The pops of color are the highlight of this space. They coordinate so well and bring an energy to the space.

Living-Room-Makeover-After-the-honeycomb-home

The Honeycomb Home | Living Room: There are few times I wish I were a college kid with a designer for a mom, and a space like this is one of those few times. Simple changes and a few great ideas created such a cool hangout spot. My favorite takeaway of the space in the fireplace filled with books. That is the coolest fireplace filler idea I’ve seen.

jesse-coulter-twin-nursery-vintage-minimalism

Jesse Coulter | Twin Nursery: These babies are going to be growing up in the coolest baby room I’ve personally ever seen (in real life of photo). All of the vintage pieces, that insane rug, and the super fun pom pom garland speak to me on a spiritual level. If I were to ever have another child, this is what I’d aim for.

inspiring-hearts-and-homes- master-bathroom

Inspiring Hearts and Homes | Master Bedroom: When someone just kicks butt at a bathroom remodel, you just have to take a moment to give them kudos. This bathroom is beautiful and all of the elements coordinate, but the thing I wanted to especially bring notice to is the tile around the sink’s splashguard. That’s essentially what I had planned on doing with that really cool patterned tile I picked up.

cad-interiors-blog-family-room-tapestry

CAD Interiors | Family Room: Oh lawd, that tapestry gives me tingles. It’s just all sorts of boho goodness. Looking past the obvious stunner of the space, The planked ceiling is dreamy and those builtins are beautiful. So many interesting architectural elements and they’ve been styled to really let them shine.

maggie-overby-studios-orange-sofa-sewing-room

Maggie Overby Studios | Studio/Sewing Room: Maggie is a thrifting prodigy, she’s even cohosted #thriftscorethursday with us. So it’s no surprise the space she shared for ORC was decked out with interesting and beautiful thrifted treasures. The striking use of color in the space is energizing and I bet motivating for sewing and crafting (good since that’s what the space is intended for anyways!).

theresnoplacelikehomemke-navy-bedroom

There’s No Place Like Home MKE | Bedroom: The stunning use of pattern on pattern in one of my favorite colors immediately drew me into this space. The glamorous pieces like the chandelier paired with fun zigzag and moosehead make this space so interesting and fun. I also saw this style bed pop up a ton in ORC and am crushing like mad on it.

whitedogvintage-bedroom

White Dog Vintage | Master Bedroom: Brittany has an incredible eye for vintage goods, but she’s also phenomenal at decorating spaces. Have you seen her kitchen? This space does not disappoint- look at that rug! It’s the showstopper of the space but then the eye starts to wander and you see that every piece is meticulously coordinated and stunning.

Modern-Eclectic-Eat-In-Kitchen-Reveal-biggerthanthethreeofus

Bigger Than The Three Of Us | Eat In Kitchen: That light fixture is cool, isn’t it? There’s, again, so much to love about this space. There’s a relaxing but interesting vibe going on about the space and I think a lot of that has to do with the careful use of color. That painting is an original, but you’ll have to visit the reveal for all those details.

One-Room-Challenge-House-Hipsters-Office-Makeover-Workspace-Reveal-2

House Of Hipsters | Office: I’m a quick fan to a space that utilizes vintage treasures and Kyla is an easy stop for vintage goodness. This office is the stuff my dreams are made of. I would be happy to curl up on that sofa and watch her work all day. And probably peruse all the trinkets styled throughout the space endlessly. The highlight for me? It’s a toss up between the pink chair and the beaded pendant light.

thouswell-living-room-classic-pieces

Thou Swell | Living Room: The classic pieces in this living room pair seamlessly with the modern pieces. There’s a lot to love about this space, too, but I’m drawn in by the silliest of things sometimes. Once I got past the beautiful use of pattern, I rested on that beautiful wall of brick, and that fireplace screen! Dreamy.

thecuratedhouse-navy-styled-living-room

The Curated House | Living Room: Navy, patterns and beautifully styled shelves? I had to slip this one in. The moody artwork above the fireplace, and that fireplace’s tile are the showstoppers for me, but there’s a lot to like about this space (there’s a dreamy office space you just have to check out).

To summarize: My favorite elements I saw repeated over and over were the use of navy, artwork, vintage finds, gold and contrast. Everyone did an incredible job with the ORC and I love all of the hardwork and interesting design choices. I’ll be participating next Spring again and I’ll definitely be taking noted from these fabulous spaces.

Thrifted Bathroom Accessories

November 12, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey guys! As you may already know, because I’ve been going on and on about it, I’m in the middle of a bathroom remodel. From studs on up, we’ve been changing out the old for new while infusing our own style in the space. It’s been expensive and we’ve bought a lot of new material for the space which is very unlike me. I prefer to source second hand as much as I can. While I didn’t find a used bathtub, vanity, lighting, tile, or anything like that, I did find a few small decorative pieces that I am so stoked to use in the space.

I have been on a basket thrifting marathon this year. Every time I pop into one of my favorite thrift stores, I’ve walked out with baskets. Beside our vanity, I’m putting up shelves that are 7 inches deep. I found these perfect little baskets for corralling little bathroom odds and ends. And then the little ceramic container had to come home. Of course I haven’t a clue what I’ll put in all the little containers I’ve picked up, but I’m sure they’ll fill up fast once we bring everything back in.

And since I totally failed at meeting the One Room Challenge deadline, I thought I’d kick off the features from #ThriftScoreThursday with this gloriously beautiful space designed by Kyla of house Of Hipsters for none other than One Room Challenge.

When Design Plans Change – Sink Faucet Dilemma

November 10, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey Guys!

Today I wanted to sit down and chat a little bit about one of the roadblocks we hit during this bathroom renovation. Everyone knows that taking on a remodel of any kind in a house that’s a bit older is nearly always going to lead to a surprise of some kind. Thankfully we’ve found no leaks, no lead, no structural issues, no bad wiring. None of the usual culprits at least. So basically we’ve been so blessed in this process. But one thing we did run into is something I’ve never seen brought up before and that’s why I felt like I had to chat about it.

Design Dilemma- how we handled out faucet design plans being foiled by SCALD GUARD

Older faucets don’t have scald guard.

My original design plan involved the use of oil rubbed bronze and brass/gold. One of the pieces I was excited to use in the space is the brass circlet toilet paper holder. It is a beautiful piece, but that wasn’t the only reason for my excitement. The octagonal base actually closely resembles the base of the shower/tub fixtures in our old bathroom. How cool, right?

36228591_027_b3 vintage-kohler-sink-faucet-tapered-base vintage-kohler-shower-faucet-base

I figured I’d pull out the ol’ Pinterest trick of spray painting the fixtures and call it a day.

Unfortunately, in one of the visits from potential contractors, it was pointed out to us that the fixtures in the bathroom were original to the build of the house. OK, who cares, was my initial reaction. And then they proceeded to explain what it is (regulates the water temperature so that it doesn’t get too hot, causes scalds or a burn) and I thought that sounded like something we really should have in a house with a 3 year old who likes to start his own baths.

I know it’s the right thing to do to replace the fixtures not only for my child’s safety, but for anyone else who may live in this house in the future.

And that’s when I started having fun looking at new fixtures for the bathroom. Luckily, I’ve had the awesome opportunity to work with Moen for this bathroom remodel. So we did not have to come out of pocket for the fixtures, but they are within the budget we initially set for them.

Bathroom fixtures can we an expense that hits hard, especially if you’ve never taken on a bathroom remodel before. We’re talking hundreds of dollars here. But the great thing about choosing fixtures is that they’re easy to take with you when you move. You see them every day so they provide function but also add to the feel of the space. I personally do feel like they’re worth investing some money into. Especially if you’ve already splurged in another area of the same space. Fancy tile with a basic towel rack? That tile won’t feel as fancy…

2b417185-e51b-4a63-9e20-83fce050040c_400 e041d029-2795-4ff7-87c2-b2ec2f8bdf74_400

The fixtures we chose to use in our space are the MOEN Banbury 4 in. centerset high arc sink faucet, and for the tub/shower we chose to use the Ashville 1-Handle Tub and Shower Faucet. Our toilet paper holder and towel rods are also from the Ashville collection, for reference. One thing I have to note here is that the finish appears to be oil rubbed bronze with gold/bronze peeking through. Those gold spots are actually quite copper. Which works fabulously with out oil rubbed bronze and copper metallics theme.

My home was built in 1954 which meant that we were on the teetering edge of possible problems. While we avoided all the well known problems, scald guard was something I’d never heard of. I hope this gives you helpful insight into the considerations that need to be accounted for in a bathroom remodel and that you’ve found this helpful!

Christmas Decorating Shaming

November 9, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

christmas decorating shaming -NOT COOL!

I had to pop in today with a rant post and I hope that’s OK. There aren’t that many of you reading here so I figure I’m only offending a small population if it is offensive.

What does it have to do with you when I start decorating for Christmas?

It really grinds my gears when I see beautiful people sharing their holiday vignettes from last year with the caption that they’re trying to be PC about when they took the picture. I shouldn’t have to include a disclaimer as to when my picture was taken. It shouldn’t offend you that I started pulling christmas decorations out November 1st.

If I want to decorate starting November 1st and it makes me happy to do so, why does that disgruntle others?

If you want to decorate November 1st and don’t, why do you hold back for what others think?

cool story bro, but what does that have to do with when I decorate - adesignerathome decorate whenever YOU want, Man. -adesignerathome

I can enjoy thanksgiving dinner surrounded with the people I’m grateful for with Christmas ornaments in the jar on my china cabinet.

Christmas ornaments sparkle and are beautiful. I have a few that are faceted that I like to leave in hurricane vases year round.

Because they make me happy.

Decorating to make myself happy does not infringe on anyone else’s human rights.

I wish people made themselves happy without worrying about other people. It’s a holiday. It’s a celebration. There are no rules.

Pull out your decorations whenever you want to and don’t give a single thought to when everyone else does it. Whether early, late or not at all- it shouldn’t matter to anyone else.

It’s a rough world. Even for those of us with stable jobs and healthy families. We need to be kinder to one another. Arguing or feeling shame over when we decorate for a holiday is unnecessary.

Don’t add to the hate in the world. Add to your own happiness.

my holiday cheer starts when i want it to, not when your calendar tells me to - adesignerathome

Books

These three books I absolutely have to recommend. If you haven’t had a chance to read them, you need to. I think they all make great gifts for someone who loves to be at home, love their home, or wants to love their home.

Subscription Boxes

Candles

And the most cliche gift I can recommend to gift to a homebody is a candle. With so many candles available to choose from, finding one that smells amazing and looks beautiful is an easy feat.

And don’t forget to make sure you’re getting your cash back on your online purchases! I do so much of my shopping online because it’s easier than taking my Target obsessed 3 year old out. But, I always click through Ebates first (and if I forget, I have the extension in my browser to remind me) so that I can get a percentage of my sale as cash back. It’s just one more way I squeeze pennies out of holiday shopping.
