The Ornate Wood Cabinet I’ve Avoided Talking About

April 21, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

thrift score thursday12

Hey There! So I guess I’ll just dive in, instead of beating around the bush about this piece. Lookie what I recently picked up!

thrifted ornate cabinet with cool hardware

It’s not real wood. And there’s a small spot of damage that you can’t even see when skimming this picture. I didn’t realize it wasn’t real wood until I saw it. But I still LOVED the hardware. So I bought it for the $60 anyways. But then we got it home and I noticed the damage on the door. It’s hollow. Coolest hollow core door ever? Maybe. But that makes it a bit difficult when wanting to leave the piece as is.

So I avoided talking about it because I was so certain that I was going to patch the hole and paint the whole piece. I definitely think it’d look cool painted. But I just didn’t wanna. It’s not the final decision. But for now, I’m not painting it.

So anyways… Let’s look at some fab features, mkay?

Just… YASSS. Loving and crushing hard on that epic basket collage.

Design Dilemma: How I Work Through Design Decisions

April 19, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Making decisions turns my brain into mush. Especially when I’m forcing myself through decisions that I normally sleep many months over. But when you’re working on a 6 week long challenge to overhaul a space, you have to force yourself to think fast. Because I do a lot of my shopping online, I can’t physically hold up options of compare them side by side before committing to a big decision. Here’s how I’ve been working through some big decision in the dining room remodel:

The big decisions I’m trying to make are wallpaper and statement artwork. I’ve narrowed the wallpaper down to two choices and the artwork I’ve narrowed down to 6 different pieces. So I saved each of the art pieces and a room shot of each wallpaper. I opened up two tabs of Picmonkey (just my editing tool of choice of the moment, you can use whatever you like) and opened each room up.

0015894_peonies-copper

PEONIES COPPER

0025028_descano-flower-green-botanical

DESCANO FLOWER GREEN BOTANICAL

And then I use the overlay tool to place the images of art over the wallpaper. My vision for the space doesn’t involve the art directly overtop the wallpaper but since they’re in such close proximity, they need to play well together.

Artwork Option 1: Red Flowers Bouquet

Artwork Option 2: Pink Flamingo

Artwork Option 3: Springtime In Marseilles

Artwork Option 4: Rainforest

Artwork Option 5: Dancing Peonies

 designcombo10

I like it.

designcombo9

Too busy on busy.

Artwork Option 6: Golden Palm Tree

designcombo11  I love it. ✓

designcombo12

I don’t love it.

And once I get through playing with the photos and making notes. I’m usually at a point where I’ve either completely narrowed it down or I’ve got it narrowed down to one or two. And then I have to have to have a serious heart to heart with myself. Do both of these wallpapers match my specific aesthetic? Will it flow with the rest of my home or am I picking it because I like it by itself? When I peek through the doorways leading from my living room to my kitchen to my dining room, do they make sense? Once I’ve got my furniture in front of and around these pieces, will I still love it?

And honestly, while I do love the copper peonies wallpaper, I don’t think I will love it in my home. I feel like choosing that will just be my way of trying to channel my inner Melissa Michaels, when that’s not actually how I enjoy decorating my home. I feel like a lot of really great designers would use it and it look stunning with the way they decorate, but me? I don’t have that particular style. I will say though, the descano flower green botanical is a lot like the Justina Blakeney wallpapers I’ve been gushing over admiring but can’t afford. So it’s a really cool compromise to come down to.

But then I decided I didn’t LOVE any of the original art choices I narrowed it down to. But I did start to have a vision. So I jumped back into the art search game and here’s what I came up with. It really has to look good to YOU. I find playing around with lots of options like this shows me what I like.

back to the drawing board

Top Right, Bottom Right

Ha, it’s crazy what my brain goes through. But this is exactly what I do! And if you’re in the middle of a design dilemma yourself, maybe trying these techniques out will help you get closer to your own decision and vision.

Playful, Colorful, Feminine Art for The Home

April 18, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

In my quest for artwork for my dining room, I started to notice a pattern in the pieces I was most drawn to. They’re playful, colorful and feminine. Which mostly sums up how I enjoy decorated spaces in general. Other than simply sharing a shot of the piece in particular I’m loving, or even just a couple of the ones I’ve been coveting, I thought a fun spin on things would be to share with you the specific artists behind the art I’m loving. Because those guys and gals are the real MVP’s of some room makeovers. And I’ll include a little sampling of each artist, just in case you’re in the market for art yourself.

10 artists whose art youll want to add to your walls now

Kiana Mosley (Read About The Artist)

From pretty florals to abstract and lots of energy, she offers variety in the Art prints available. I really enjoy the bright bursts of color in the floral pieces.

Alexandra Dzh (Read About The Artist)

Bright and vibrant flowers, foliage and fruit are what you can enjoy from this artist.

MIN-H0Q-GNA-001_A_PD MIN-0EO-GNA-001_A_PD

Angela Thompson (Read About The Artist)

Fresh and Modern, i.e. totally hipster. I love the fun youthful vibe Angela’s  pieces have.

MIN-6U4-GNA-001_A_PD MIN-RG0-GNA-001_A_PD

Stephanie Ryan (Read About The Artist)

Really pretty, delicate and feminine florals. If you’re dealing with a space leaning too masculine, these prints will bring in the girly in a fun way (or you could add a dose of lace and doilies- your choice ;))

MIN-3WC-GNA-001_A_PD MIN-8NQ-GNA-001_A_PD

Wilder California (Read About The Artist)

A pretty popular one with design bloggers, and it’s not surprising why. Plants and swanky cool filters make these photographs worthy of gracing many walls.

MIN-1U4-GNA-001_A_PD MIN-784-GNA-001_A_PD

Betty Hatchett (Read About The Artist)

Betty is an artist whose worked I’ve gravitated towards before. Her Healer print lives in my bedroom. She does an array of different styles though, and I think she has something that would suit many different people.

MIN-4CR-GNA-001_A_PD MIN-1G4-GNA-001_A_PD

Natalie Malan (Read About The Artist)

A classic and timeless, yet still ultra trendy floral is Natalie’s specialty with her fine art prints. Similar designs are constantly gracing the face of planners and notebooks. And they can have a special spot in our decor, too!

MIN-ZK6-GNA-001_A_PD MIN-4TJ-GNA-001_A_PD

Kelsey McNatt (Read About The Artist)

Whimsy and fun are the first thoughts that come to mind when browsing Kelsey’s shop. Any shop with a flamingo is a winner in my book.

MIN-GNR-MGA-001_A_PD MIN-3GW-MGA-001_A_PD

Cass Loh (Read About The Artist)

Cass’s pieces are full of fun. I’m not normally a typography kind of person, but c’mon- that’s hilarious. And how jungalicious is that forest print?

MIN-78W-GNA-001_A_PD MIN-737-GNA-001_B_PD

Kelly Ventura (Read About The Artist)

With a lot of abstract pieces to browse through, my brain starts to feel like I’m looking at inkblot cards- in a good way! I love the way the mind can wander in a piece like that. And then there’s the doses of botanical inspired pieces, which are always good.

MIN-R04-DNA-001_A_PD MIN-170-GNA-001_C_PD

Do you have any favorite artists? Or a style you go back to time and time again? I tend to be all over the place but I definitely found my pattern when brainstorming for our dining room design. Whether it be fun, youthful, whimsical or serious, art is such a fun way to play with the mood of a space.

Epic Etsy Finds & The Shops Behind Them: Ball And Claw Vintage

April 17, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Epic Etsy Finds and The Shops Behind Them- part II

If you know anything about me by now, I love to get off topic. Especially when a room has a deadline. Instead of talking about the dining room I’m supposed to be working on, I wanted to chat a little bit today about another Epic Etsy find of mine and the shop behind the item! Because every great item on Etsy has an awesome shop behind it. Today, the spotlight is on Ball and Claw Vintage.

Have you seen their Instagram feed– holy beautiful boho!

So the reason why I wanted to chat about this particular shop today is because of their mud cloth inventory. And the reason why I wanted to chat about indigo mud cloths is because they are really beautiful faux upholstery fabrics. I love draping them over a chair, tucking it into the sides and keeping it that simple to cover old/ugly fabric.

And here’s a really cute clock I picked up to eventually use in my son’s room when that space gets finished. I love the turquoise!

The shop has a lot of other really cool merchandise, too. You’ll see the merchandise styled in their Instagram feed to give you an idea of their potential, but these pieces will look so good in an array of space. Here are a few of my faves:

Isn’t their stuff so cool? Perfect if you’re loving boho vibes like I do! Or if you just need a dose of cool textiles, they’ve surely got you covered. If you stop by their Instagram or Etsy shop, be sure to tell them I sent you.

Where To Buy: Trendy and Cheap Planter Pots

April 14, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hello! If you’re a quick one, you’re already putting several things together. 1. It’s Thursday, so we’re talking thrifted items so naturally the “Where To Buy” is thrifting. 2. We’re working on the dining room for the One Room Challenge, I love plants, plants are a big part of my decorating style so I’ve thrifted like crazy to find lots of planters. 3. This is totally the follow up to my post earlier this week where I covered my “pro” tips for plant purchasing. 4. I’m going to show you pictures of the plants and planter pots I’ve just bought!

First up, let’s chat about the vignette I shared on Instagram. All 3 basket planters were picked up for less than $10 at thrift stores. Eclectic interiors is having it’s time in the trendy spotlight so finding unique planters at the thrift store is an inexpensive way of trying out the look. Bonus: The ginger jar and tall wooden vase were also just picked up at the thrift store.

Brass containers go for big bucks on sites like Etsy. They also work really well for eclectic, glam and boho interiors. I found this one for $2 at the Goodwill outlet. It’s huge! Really, any large container can be used as a planter like this. Keep your eyes peeled and get creative.

And here’s a small one you’ve seen pop up here before.

Another basket planter- these are my favorite for a good dose of texture to a space. And the little ceramic Dutch inspired windmill planter. Isn’t that just so cute? I really enjoy the juxtaposition of the windmill and the succulent!

This would fill up that blank wall space perfectly! Macrame wall hanging tutorial with knots and variations - A Designer At Home

By spending a bit of time sorting through the shelves at the thrift store, allowing yourself to have some fun with your decor and reimagining pieces as a new life as a planter- you can beef up your plant collection for way cheaper than buying pots at the home improvements stores.

Missed my plant buying tips? Find those here.

It’s feature time! I went through the feed and found even more wonderful examples of cute and trendy thrifted planter pots. As always, I encourage you to give the features a visit and some love.

Boho Wallpaper Options and progress

April 13, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A big part of my design plan for the dining room is big impact with interesting walls. I shared an inspiration pic last week that had a shibori look wall treatment above wainscotting. I love it! And while I do love the exact look, I’m looking to do something slightly different. I’ve never wallpapered before. I have stenciled, but that’s not really the look I’m going for. And I need something a bit more than just paint. So, wallpaper it is! And I’m actually excited about that because wallpaper can do something that paint and stencils just can’t.

Wallpaper Boulevard has offered to work with me on this project, and since I’m so indecisive and am having trouble making a snap decision, I thought I’d share my favorites here today to see which one you like best.

boholicious dining room wallpaper ideas

Top Row: KATSUGI COBALT & TURQUOISE,  DESCANO FLOWER GREEN BOTANICAL,  TAHITI SCENIC

Bottom Row: PEONIES COPPER,  IRIS INDIGO SHIBORI,  CITIES TOILE ROBINS EGG

Which ones do you like? I also did plant shopping and shared a sneak peek of what that’s looking like on Instagram:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEBscaaKcua

And then there’s just the usual patching holes, piles of things I can’t figure out what to do with a spots of walls that are still being painted. But that’s not nearly as interesting as pretty wallpaper, right?

Don’t forget to check in on the other linking participant’s spaces at Calling It Home.
