A Mid Century China Cabinet I Don’t Need & Too Much Work Left

May 4, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Today is the final check in before the reveal of our spaces for the 6 week One Room Challenge. Just to refresh, I’ve chosen to makeover my dining room. The theme for the space is Vintage Eclectic with strong boho vibes. I’ve split the space into 2 main spaces and 4 main functions. Dining and Mudroom are the two main spaces. The backdoor is off this room and we have a parking pad out back. So we go in and out this door an awful lot and it makes sense to designate jacket, bag and shoe drop off and storage here. The 4 main functions of the space are getting in and out the door, eating, crafting and blog work.

Our home is 1,200 square feet and there just isn’t the space to have a separate crafting and working spaces. We all enjoy being right on top of each other while we do different activities so that works out just dandy for us!

We made and cancelled plans for wainscotting. Found and lost a dining set. Fell behind on painting and fireplace plans due to a stomach bug. And I’ve shopped.

Yesterday the Craigslist Gods finally parted the heavy rains on me and I found a dining set! $200 was more than I wanted to spend right now, but it came with the table, 5 chairs (including 1 captains chair) and a china cabinet. I quite like the china cabinet I have so I may resell this one. Even though I like the color and style a lot. It’s a tough call! Mine has open shelves and cabinet, this one is all glass cabinet. Whenever I figure this out I’ll resell the one I won’t keep.

Late Night Chair Arranging- Couldn’t Lift the Table Alone!

Basically, I have all of the pieces to make this happen. But, I need to squeeze out the time to get it all together! I still have the next week and a half to finish up at my day job and hubby has started with a new job and won’t be home much the next couple of weeks. Life threw quite a bit at us this past month. I wouldn’t have thought any of this would happen!

In the next few days I’d really like to:

  1. Install the new pendant light
  2. Resize fireplace mantle
  3. Hang art and lights above fireplace mantle
  4. Finish getting the junk out of this space
  5. Finish Painting walls

And what I’d like to get done in the next month:

  1. Put up wallpaper
  2. Add some new trim (saving the fun job for another time)
  3. Refinish the table and chairs

This should get interesting! Follow along with the project: Sign Up For The Newsletter

Crushing On: Layered Rugs

May 3, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey guys,

With so much needing to be done in the dining room, and so much getting in the way of it all getting done, I thought I’d take a step back today and look at pretty spaces. Because nothing recharges my brain much like a good room ogling session. What’s on my brain today? Layered rugs. Layered rugs are awesome for all spaces. Let’s explore some totally awesome ways of layering rugs and why you should be doing it.

Layered Rugs: Why You Should Do It & Ideas

Helen's Eclectic Boho Haven- House Tour on Apartment Therapy
Helen’s Eclectic Boho Haven- House Tour on Apartment Therapy

Why you should be doing it? Yeah! There’s lots of really fun ways of styling a space and using layered rugs to make a statement. Like in this room, from Helen’s Eclectic Boho Haven (house tour via Apartment Therapy). There’s an area rug that brings a funky texture to the floor, but there’s a secondary rug in the room. It’s smaller but the perfect size and offset color to bring attention to that gorgeous armchair (the one with the wood arms, not the puffy blue beast ;))

I love the use of smaller rugs in spaces to draw attention to a particularly special piece. And in this particular space, it mimics the detailed cords (the lines?) of the larger rug, but in a different shape. Yeah, catch the circles and rectangles? At first glance you may not see it, but it’s a really cool way of adding that extra layer and depth to a space.

How about when you’ve found a funky fun rug for your space? You don’t want to buy the really big size (or the size appropriate for your space) because 1. It’s hella expensive and/or 2. Your fear it’ll engulf the space. This has to be my favorite rug layering trick. Not only does it open up the possibilities for cool rugs on a budget, but there’s lots of practical reasons to do this, too.

Say you have a sisal or jute rug. Do you know what a paint in the butt those things are to get dirt out of those. All. The. Crevices. So throw another rug on top of it. One that’ll vacuum more easily. You get the texture of the natural weave without the pain in the butt cleaning (or maybe I’m the only one with especially dirty dog, child and husband)

And then there’s the practical, “I have an area rug in my kitchen but I stand closer to the counter in certain places and my feet hang off the rug in those spots” kind of rug layering.

I just love it when functionality looks this good. An excuse to add more textiles? As if I needed a whole blog post to make up excuses for adding more rugs to my space. But obviously there’s a method to the madness. I mean, perfectly sane people are doing it!

Some of those perfectly sane people also use rugs to make a space look really cool. And by cool I mean balanced and styled well for the eye. I’m sure a lot of people look at a space with an offset rug and think, “ooh, such a rebel but i can’t stop staring!”

Neutral With fun pops- layered rugs and lots of pillows

It’s because it’s interesting. In the example above, you can follow the line of the rug to the sofa. Almost luring you in to have a seat? Even if you’re not trying to subconsciously lure your guests to get comfortable, you may find that an offset placement like this adds just the right amount of spunk to your space.

So rugs are fun, sometimes there’s a method to the madness of layering them. Sometimes it’s a happy coincidence that it works. Looking at beautiful spaces with layered rugs has certainly given me a few fun ideas to play around with.

Working on any fun home projects right now? I’d love to hear!

Wainscotting Plans & Lighting

April 27, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It’s time to check in on the progress of our dining room makeover. The design for the space is overall eclectic with strong boho notes and a retro vibe. This past week has been incredibly stressful with a lot of intense life changes. So progress has slowed and it looks like it may hurt the overall project getting completed. Whaaa!

I’ll briefly gloss over the big stressor and that is my job! There was a huge issue that they don’t want to resolve so I’ve been voluntold that my last day is May 13th. Without set income, my cute wainscotting plans are on the back burner. And this totally sucks, but we’ve already started work on the roof (and that needed to be done ages ago). So we need to be careful about our spending here on out.

But the plans were really cute! Wanna see my terrible sketch?

rough mission style wainscoting plans for dining room

It’s supposed to be a simple flat panel design with strong mission/arts and crafts influence. I love mission style home details so this was going to be that special touch. I have a fireplace mantle that’s way too big my husband and I are having a bit of fun figuring out how to resize it. We can still put that in place even if the the rest of the feature isn’t panning out.

Lighting and art arrived! None of it has been installed because the art and the 2 swing arm lights are supposed to go above the fireplace and I was waiting because of the trim work but since that’s on hold we’ll go ahead and move along with that. And the overhead light I’m waiting to install until we’ve got our table situation figured out.

I’m using the hairpin legs from the round table I thrifted from Craigslist way back and we’re making a table top. It’s taking longer than was planned which was also a bummer because I had planned on having it finished in time for It’s So Ugly It’s Cool. But my gals totally rocked it and you can check out their projects: Framed Graphic Prints for Under $10, Dresser to Media Stand Makeover, It’s So Ugly It’s Cool: Kitchen Table Set, chinoiserie to velvet reupholstered vintage couch, How to Update a Thrifty Vase, and Thrifted Find | A Pretty Welcoming Vase.

What’s Left? My revised budget friendly list is:

  • Wallpaper
  • Finish Table Top
  • Install Lighting
  • Hang art
  • Resize and Install fireplace mantle and surround

Unless I make enough in sales from my craigslist listings, I will reuse chairs I already have to go with the table. I also have a really cool fabric I’ll hem down for a tablecloth (but that’s not in my final to do list, that may wait until later). And I want to get some of my plants hung instead of all over every surface I can clear off.

Progress I did make was getting the china cabinet cleared out and moved into the kitchen. And the rolling cart that was on that wall is emptied, cleaned and listed on Craigslist. Progress made? Yes. Still lots to do? Yup! Plans changed much? Absolutely! Ha, wish me luck!

Check out the other spaces at Calling It Home.

Where I Work & Play: Multifunctional Spaces

April 22, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Welcome! It’s Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours: Work & Play Edition week! The oh so sweet and talented Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Co. invited me to share the space in which I work and my family and I play. If you’re stopping in from The Décor Fix, welcome welcome! And if you’ve ended up here elsewhere, so glad to have you here, too! Multifunctional spaces are my jam because with a mere 1,200 square feet to work with- I need to maximize and get creative with the rooms we have.

Once upon a time I took the smallest bedroom of our house and turned it into a home office. And I never used it! It was closed off from the rest of the house and I couldn’t leave my boy to play unsupervised. So the room filled with junk and I hardly see it anymore. We have better plans for the space. But that’s after the kitchen gets a facelift and the dining room gets finished. Here’s what that cute space used to look like.

where I blog, my creative corner

Right now, I work in my living room. I just recently shared the new look for this space and how it functions as our current eating space as well as hanging out. But I want to go into a bit more detail of how this space works for me to work in and for my son to play in.

Honestly, though, if I am to be completely honest. I do most of my computer work on my lunch breaks in my car at work. I work full time out of the home and have a mandatory 1 hour lunch break so I take that time to do most of my blog posts. But I didn’t think a picture of my car would be cute?

The white chair that everyone loves is my work chair. It was a $50 Craigslist find. It already needs new upholstery but I’m letting it wear until the kiddo is older. I sit here with my feet propped up on the cute little foot rest and my laptop in my lap. It makes it easy to chat with my husband while he sits on my couch and I’m able to sit my laptop down and slide out of the seat immediately to jump into the latest game my son is playing.

Beside me is the small cabinet in which I keep my blogging binder, current paperwork I’m dealing with and my planner. Isn’t this thing cute? It came in my “organize” Globein box and it couldn’t be more perfect for me.

write with purpose A Designer At Home blogger's planner and focus

And the cubby on the wall with all. the. art. holds a small portion of the son’s massive toy collection. He’s a collector… of toys and rocks. He’s also always wildly interested in what I’m doing which is why it works out so well for us for me to be in the middle of it all while I work.

Hot Water Heater Buying Tips

April 21, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Tips for buying a hot water heater - and a little on our personal experience

Hot water heaters. It’s not something I’d ever shopped for before and I imagine it’s something the rest of you don’t do very often either (house flippers excluded ;)). Since it’s something I’ve done recently in my partnership with Rheem, I thought I’d share some tips for buying a hot water heater.

  1. Determine what your power type is. Most likely it’s one of these: Electric, Natural Gas, or Propane.
  2. Figure out which type of system makes sense for you. Here’s a helpful, interactive page from Rheem that can break down in an easy to understand way: Selecting A Water Heater.
    • Traditional Tank-type
    • Tankless
    • Solar
    • Point-of-use
  3. Have a contractor help you calculate what size system you need. This chart from The Home Depot can help, but it’s always best to consult a professional to be certain. For example, our household is a family of 3, so per the chart we need a 46 – 56 gallon capacity tank. And our home’s required temperature rise is 120 degrees fahrenheit – 55 degrees fahrenheit ground water temperature = 65 degrees fahrenheit. The gallons capacity and the required temperature rise are what you’ll need to see which units will work for your home and it’s location.
    • Tank-types are based on capacity.
    • Tankless are based on gallons per minute.
  4. Do the homework. Don’t settle for replacing your unit with the same thing you’ve had. The manufacturers of these units are always coming out with different models with different features and it’s more likely a different unit will work best for you. Did you know your water heater makes up nearly 20% of your home’s energy usage?Definitely worth investing some time shopping around. (For us, this went way deeper than simply replacing the unit. We moved ours, reran pipes and went from a gas to an electric unit.)
    • New high efficiency water heaters are more efficient at heating water and keeping it hot. This means a lower annual operating cost and more available hot water.
    • New features, including Rheem’s EcoNet Smart Home Automation system utilize wifi-enabled technology, to control your water heater and receive maintenance alerts.
    • Advanced, energy-efficient products, such as the new Rhem Professional Prestige Hybrid Heat Pump Water HEater offer over $4,000 in lifetime savings with less than 2 years payback.

I don’t think choosing an appliance like this has to be hard. It’s intimidating but it’s not hard to buy a hot water heater. Contractors and associates at The Home Depot stores are always there to help you but I think it’s smart to understand what goes into the decision so you can play a role in the purchase.
