Different Ways To Light Up A Yard

June 28, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Different Ways to Light Up A Yard

Having just wrapped up a large portion of a curb appeal project, I learned and discovered different options for illuminating the yard. So, like I love to do here, I want to share what I found with you. Between solar lights, motion sensing lights, garden stakes, plug-in, hard-wired, ambient and security lighting, there’s a lot to navigate. I’ve found using multiple lights to be the best scenario for our yard.

  • Main Porch Light

    • Something attractive that matches the exterior, interior and style of the neighborhood is definitely important. Coordinating with the other
    • For safety reasons, it’s good to make sure this light is hard wired. So it can’t purposefully or accidentally be unplugged or compromised if the weather doesn’t permit it be recharged.
    • Sensitive motion sensing lights can be helpful if you have visitors coming late at night but you don’t want to leave your porch light running constantly. I don’t know about your house, but if my light is running non stop, you don’t want to walk out onto that porch because every moth in the neighborhood is flying under it. With it set to high sensitivity, it cuts on when it senses a car driving past so it’s pretty good!

  • Strategically Placed Security Lights

    • No matter the neighborhood, it’s a good idea to have lighting in the dark corners around the property. It helps deter potential burglars, property theft, peeping toms (just keeping it real) and helps you from tripping or falling into holes.
    • It pays to shop around a bit and find a light with added features. Motion sensing lights that not only cut on with movement, but whose sensitivity can be adjusted are helpful if you have trouble with a light getting tripped too often. I find it helps, too, to have one that will stay on for a bit after it detects the motion has stopped. And lights that cut on with nightfall and off again with the morning sun are helpful because we already have enough to remember, right?
lampsplus1 lampsplus1 lampsplus1
  • Ambient Lighting

    • Lightly illuminate seating areas and gardens for an ethereal glow and for ambiance. I like to plop a few around my front porch so it can be enjoyed even in the middle of the night. Sometimes stars and the sounds of crickets are irresistible.
    • For these lights, I like to use something solar powered since I prefer them to be a set it and forget it without being a drain on my electric bill.
    • Plus, it’s been said that bugs like roaches don’t like light. So I may be extra hopeful in thinking these may help but I’m willing to try anything little tricks to keep those things away from the house.

  • Decorative Lighting

    • So we’ve covered illuminating the garden, covering dark corners and making sure the front is lit. But how about the places you want to hang out? Tabletop lamps help make an outdoor space feel more cozy and can even be found in solar power. String lights add a whimsical ambiance and spot lights add focus to parts of your house and yard you want to show off.

Using different intensities of light in different parts of your yard with different functions adds safety, accessibility and attractiveness to your yard. Everything from drinking morning coffee, to late night guests to letting your dog out before bed, choosing the lights that work best for the demands your outdoor spaces needs will life a bit easier.

Interior Design Coloring Books

Interior Design Coloring Books Matching Passion with Stress Relief

Many of you who follow the happenings of this blog already know that recently I quit my job without a backup for that income. The stress I was feeling was affecting all parts of me, mentally, physically and emotionally. So my husband and I agreed to have me quit and we’d figure it out day by day. So far, it’s been the biggest blessing I’ve ever experienced. Without getting too emotionally and making this awkward for anyone else to read, I’ll leave at I did it, I’m happy and I’m not nearly as stressed out as I was before.

So what do I do to fill my days? Besides being more present my son, friends, family and husband, my house is cleaner, more projects are finished, I garden more successfully, pray more deeply and I cook. I’m not more present here on the blog, but I am enjoying refining and growing my interior design style during this time, too.

Between practice and reading I feel like I’m learning a lot. I’ve found a way to have fun with this passion and destress at the same time are interior design coloring books. It’s something I can do to keep busy and off of facebook while my son plays with his friends and it’s therapeutic and fun. And since it’s related to the realm of decorating and design, I thought I’d pull together some of my favorite coloring books and others I’m personally wanting to try here on the blog to share with you.

I’m a huge fan of the blog and book author, Melissa Michaels. She writes at The Inspired Room and even though our styles differ quite a bit, her ideals and practical approach to decorating is one I admire. I’ve been part of the book launch promotion group for her past 3 books and I’m in the group again for her coloring book release. I’m not obligated in any way to share the coloring book here today but I have been luh-ving it so I wanted to mention it just in case you’re in the market, I do think you should check it out.

The Inspired Room Coloring Book: Creative Spaces to Decorate as You Dream

The ones I’m most excited about trying next are these next two. The subject matter of the first is right up my alley and I think if you’re into the boho/eclectic style, you’ll find yourself drawn to this one, too. And the other just looks hilariously reassuring because that cover- it’s actually messier than most of my house (this shocks me ;))

If you’re into lots of little details, these two below are ones I really liked the concept behind. The pages show clear scenes but give you lots of options for making the details as different as you want.

Granted, a lot of the books cater to a specific style. But I still find it fun taking those bones and transforming them with color. It’s like a challenge. Probably one designers on tight budgets feel often since the ideal piece doesn’t always magically appear for a good price.

There are even series of books dedicated to the stress relief properties of this hobby. Pretty cool, eh?

Some things I’ve been looking for in coloring books that may help you, too:

  • Clear lines. Not enough definition of the subjects on the page and they become fustratingly difficult to color.
  • A variety of designs to color. Some rooms, some pillows, etc.
  • Removeable pages.
  • Designs on only 1 side of the page so the colors don’t get muddles.
  • Thicker than printer paper pages so the pages don’t ripple.

So there you go! I hope you give book coloring a try. It may not be for everyone, but they’re pretty inexpensive to pick up and try so I think the investment is worth it. Do you have any favorites? I’ll be honest, I really like the ones with mandalas, too!

Bell Garland Fireplace Screen

June 21, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Colorful bohemian gypsy eclectic fireplace in dining room

Hey, hello!

There’s a monthly challenge that my friend Jess from Domicile 37 hosts every month that invites your favorite bloggers to create a project inspired by the months themed retailer or designer. This month’s themed shop is Urban Outfitters.

Always on top of current decor trends, urban outfitters is a place with really cool pieces- most of which are within the average bears reasonable budget.

But reasonable enough budget isn’t always my and your reality so we’re going to get creative, okay?

Before I share what I created, let’s get into a little “why?”

If you’re new here, you may not have seen my recent faux fireplace project for my dining room. It’s teal and fun and my dreams come true. It’s a focal point in my dining room aservice a fireplace (even faux) should be. But the space below the fireplace has been bugging me.

I don’t have the budget right now to do anything tile related like I’d like to do. And I don’t care for the chalkboard inserts, they’re really cool for the right space but this isn’t the vibe or look for mine. Plus I just did a ton of work doing a wainscoting look in here so I’m wanting to keep that partially visible for a bit (yeah I can see it elsewhere in the room but still). So I really settled on a screen type feature.

I had found this one on Offer Up. It’s like Craigslist in app form if you’re not familiar. But it sold before I could pick it up.

Bell fireplace screen

I really liked the bells and the slight nod to oriental decor that I love. When perusing Urban Outfitters for inspiration, I found the Magical Thinking Klara Hanging Wall Decor, I thought, “Hey, this has bells and has a cool shape. I like it.” And then I thought about it a bit more and decided it would make the perfect simple project to adjust a bit for my preferred location.

So I picked up 2 dozen adorable 2 inch tall bells, found a skein of black embroidery floss, grabbed 2 tacks and a pair of scissors and I was ready to create.

Teal fireplace with hanging bells for faux fireplace screen

Decorating with peacock influence and attempting to add old house charm to a basic brick ranch

DIY home decorating adding missing character like teal fireplace, wainscoting and bell charm

You’ll notice I didn’t use 2 dozen bells here. And that’s because I also recreated the bell garland chime from Urban Outfitters. If you want to see how that turned out, I’m also sharing my front porch alternative and some curb appeal updates today. The bell garland makes an appearance there. 🙂

I hope the idea of using popular retailers gives you some inspiration to take inspiration from their merchandise to create decor for your own home. Creating is therapeutic so it’s sure to be a lot of fun. Please also visit my friends who have shared their own inspired by creations today. Thanks so much for stopping by!

Hobnail milk glass lamp and perforated lampshade

June 16, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey There!

While I’m definitely one to “ooh” and “aah” down the aisles at Target and West Elm, there’s something refreshing about looking at a space and being unable to completely replicate it. I’ve grown more and more to love this style so as I redecorated bits and pieces of my bedroom, thrifted lighting came in.

The first piece was the ceiling light. The short story of this light is Brynne found it and being the awesome person that she is, shipped it to me upon my request. It’s perfect in every way imaginable.

The next piece that came in is the hobnail milk glass and wood table lamp. I found it at the Goodwill (I freaking love that place! Didn’t know I had one so close until recently) for $5 and the size is perfect and I enjoy the unique look.

And the last piece I brought into the space is this perforated lamp shade. I just picked it up last weekend. I’d seen these before online but never in person. It’s so pretty and girly. The contrast with the sleek modern lamp is a treat.

Now that I’ve shared my recent thrift scores, here are my favorites from the feed:

Curb Appeal: How To Plan A Garden

June 14, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

I want my garden to look lush and full now, but I know I’ll end up setting myself up for failure if I don’t plan my garden for the future. Since this is something I’m working through while wrapping up a few other projects, it felt like a great time to share what I’ve been learning and my plans for my yard.

Let’s jump into the fun part:

rightfrontyard

I plan on putting two trees in the yard because we need the shade on our house. There aren’t many structures or trees around our house and that means the sun heats our house up pretty quickly. That’s one of the big reasons why the awnings are staying put for the most part. Only windows that aren’t so much affected because of their placement get to come down.

I chose a mimosa tree because I’ve loved them since I was little, the flowers are pretty and who wouldn’t want to drink mimosas under a mimosa tree?

And the apple tree because I definitely believe in some level of self sustainability. If we can grow some of our own produce and water it with collected rain water, it’ll put a pleasant dent in our grocery bill.

In the actual garden bed, I have planned for 3 banana leaf plants towards the back. In Between those I have decided on an ornamental grass that gets about 4 feet tall. Around those I’ve left room for potted plants. Maybe some kind of bulb?

From the driveway to the sidewalk to the front door I’ve started working on a path with pavers and there will also be some pavers that lead to the water spigot to make access easier than it is now.

You’ll have to wait until next week’s reveal to see what else I’ve been working on- the suspense! But for now, here are some tips for garden planning:

Tips For Garden Planning

  1. Know Your Zone. Plants not in your zone will not survive very well.

  2. Plan for Different Seasons. If you don’t want a brown garden in winter, mix in some cold hardy evergreen plants.

  3. Identify Needs for the Space (i.e. Privacy, Shade, Space for a water hose). If you need to access anything in your garden, make sure there’s ample space. Create paths when needed. Choose bushier, taller plants for privacy or vines that will fill out a trellis.

  4. Working with the mature height and width in mind, Create tiers for more interest. Plants start out small but each plant grows to a different height. Make sure there’s enough space around each plant and that they’re placed in a way where you can see all of them when they grow to full height.

  5. Play around with an online garden planning tool. There’s loads of free ones that offer different features. It’s good to get a visual of what you’re working with before you’re digging and redigging.

And I’ll leave you there. Your garden can be as complicated or simple as you want it to be. Drought tolerant or water loving, flowering or green, your garden needs to suit you. Online garden planning sites can help to give you a visual before execution and preplanning will give your garden interest and accessibility where and when you need it. In 1 week, I’ll be sharing my curb appeal progress!

My thrifted teal fireplace mantle

June 9, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

thrift score thursday12

Hey there! How about we chat thrifty faux fireplaces and other swanky second hand items today, yeah? If you’ve been by the blog of Instagram this past week, you’ll have seen my “new” colorful fake fireplace set up in my dining room. I’ve always obsessed over the architectural detail and have been looking for a mantle and surround for years. It just so happened the weekend before I shared my living room and dining room in the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours, I found a perfect one!

We got it home the day before my son’s 4th birthday party. And then I painted it up until minutes before guests arrived Saturday. And we got it attached to the wall Sunday. I work under pressure, y’all.

wp-1465188793131.jpg

On the fireplace mantle I am using my collection of thrifted brass candlesticks and my eBay found cactus candles. The plant is in a thrifted basket. The brass planter is from Goodwill and the fringe plant stand I found through Craigslist and added the fringe. The wooden piece between the plants was passed down to me, it belonged to my great grandmother. The art (Hobson Sconce) and lamps (Hobson Sconce) are the only items that weren’t second hand.

What do you think?
