Global Bohemian Bedroom Inspiration

August 8, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

We’re officially over with the 4 weeks to a global home but I wanted to take the inspiration a step further and create a few fun mood boards based around my favorite decorating theme: global bohemian. Today I want to share a mood board created from scratch for the bedroom. My bedroom has evolved into a space I wouldn’t plan outright. I love the room we have, but it’s still fun to flex creativity and give those of you who come here for boho inspiration more ideas.

$1000-bohemian-vintage-global-master-bedroom-mood-board-makeover-inspiration-free-design

Rug $149 | End Table $60 | Headboard $249 | Lantern $79 | Coverlet $149 | Blue Pillow $18 | Oversized Kilim Pillow I $89 | Oversized Kilim Pillow I $89

The design does not include provisions for a dresser, so if you really do need to pare everything down into the $1000, I would suggest skipping the custom mixture of pillows and coverlet and going with a set like this one from Target. You could also skip the headboard and use something simpler and hang a pretty, and inexpensive tapestry. Thrifting is everyone’s BFF, so make sure to utilize that as a resource, too.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this free bohemian inspired design. If you enjoyed it, please consider giving it a share so that others may benefit from it too.

The Finishing Touches For A Global Boho Look

August 1, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Welcome to the final post in the 4 week series of how to get the global boho look. The past three weeks, we’ve broken down some of the important layers of designing a space. Week 1 it was all about the foundation of building a room with furniture and how you can develop a global style at this stage. Week 2 we covered the textiles because especially with a global bohemian interior, textiles are essential to get right. And last week we shared tips for artwork in a global boho space. At this point, we’re ready for the fun stuff: Decor.

This is everything from knick knacks to plants to shelf display, vases, candles, you name it. Get ready for decor explosion because there’s a good chance you’re going to want to go shopping once we’ve shared all our favorites.

I really enjoy using Instagram for finding inspiration and to just let my mind melt. If you guys would like, I’ve been thinking of putting together a post about my favorite accounts to follow. Let me know if I should and I will 🙂

And now you should really check out Katie Gavigan Interiors and Casa Watkins Living for their suggestions and guidance on choosing decor for a global designed space. I think you’ll appreciate the different perspectives we each have on global style.

All About The Floors Of Our Bathroom

July 30, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

After ditching the too big bathroom vanity, the next plan I had for our bohemian bathroom remodel was the removal of the floors. The 98 cents a square foot tile had to go. They just look awful. I wish builders and flippers would get away from using it. So bad so that I would’ve preferred starting out with old linoleum than this tile. Call me crazy but I actually like the look of that stuff.

Taking on a bathroom renovation budget is really scary. We’re not DIYers and we don’t have any skills. So the cost for us to remodel the bathroom was much higher than a lot of bathroom renovations on other blogs I’ve read. It felt like the first place in our home that really needed a makeover though. Costs ended up quite a bit more than we initially contracted out for because every layer that came down led to needing the next layer pulled down.

Vintage Bohemian Bathroom Remodel

Because I was already nervous about the cost, I also wanted to make sure I was mild in my choices. I was originally planning for and in love with cement encaustic tile for the floor and a bright turquoise hexagon wall tile. But I worried that it would be too out there for a buyer if we needed to sell in the next 5 years. We certainly wouldn’t be able to afford retiling it just to sell the house.

So I went a hunt for a tile that was white, but still in a shape that echoed the same interesting pattern as the encaustic tile I adored. I ended up with the Jeffrey Court Marrakech tile. It’s a white tile. So I did the white tile with white walls (this may change soon…).

Middle Eastern and Mediterranean inspired vintage bohemian bathroom remodel

Some preliminary ideas for the floors were marble hexagon or slate or a light colored polished stone. But those fell off the table really soon in the planning stages.

For the floors, I wanted something that wouldn’t contrast too much with the wood flooring of the hallways. Well… wouldn’t you know, there’s this relatively new and cool tile that looks like wood. And it’s pretty cheap!

Inexpensive wood look tile with vintage rug

Initially I started looking for a tile that matched the warm pine color. But I hate the finish of these floors and dream of one day replacing them or settling for restaining them. In the end it wouldn’t match so I change my focus for a tile that is similar in color to what I plan for the hardwood’s future. I shared about this floor choosing process last fall here.

So they’ve been installed for about 8 months now and I really love them. They’re quite beautiful and they were inexpensive. That really helped balance the already over the top budget for the space. Have I mentioned how much I budgeted? Gulp. Now, mind you, this includes the relocating of the hot water heater and the new unit- $12,000. But it really did help to go high/low on the space. I digress… I’ll chat all about that another day.

Vintage Bohemian Bathroom: All about the floor choices

So now we’ve got these sweet wood look tiles on the floor. But like most bohemians, I don’t like bare floors. I like rugs. Lots of them.

I tried using grey and black geometric rugs that I picked up last year on clearance at target. I didn’t like it. Then I tried the blue ones I had picked up last summer. But it was too much blue. And then when playing some musical rugs, I pulled this one out of the bedroom.

Vintage middle eastern rug with maroon and navy: a vintage bohemian bathroom

I like it a lot. I bought it for a great deal through ecarpetgallery on eBay (they also have a website you can shop from). I’ve now bought 3 rugs through them and they’re all really lovely. They don’t know I’m writing this, but if they ever did want to collaborate, I’d love to work with them.

Some people may worry about it getting wet. It’s small enough to where I can roll it and throw it in my washer. And it’s heavy enough to where I can vacuum it frequently. So I don’t think I’m going to have much of an issue with mold/mildew.

Maroon and navy runner rug with lace curtains and teal bathroom vanity

When looking all together, you can probably see why I may want to paint the walls. I feel like they need a dark color as heavy as the floor is in the space. But I love the copper stencil border and if I take on painting the walls, I’ll want to redo that too. Who knows if I’ll ever make the time to do all that though.

I don’t know how much of any of this is all that helpful. If you’re taking on a bathroom renovation yourself, I would definitely give the wood look tile a consideration. They’re much easier to DIY, too if you wanted to try and go that route. And weigh in on the whole painted wall dilemma I’m having in the comments below. I’d love to pick your brain!

Whats on my vintage lane credenza

July 28, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

What does a rattan tray, campaign style coaster set, soda crate, doll size peacock chair and wooden puzzle have in common?

They’re all on my vintage Lane credenza!

Bohemian decorated vintage lane credenza

Can I be honest for a minute? Sometimes I thrift a lot, sometimes I don’t thrift much at all. My mood and funds play a big part in those swings.

I don’t always share what I pick up as soon as I buy it because I forget/want to style it/have something else I want to share and don’t want to overwhelm an entire post. And then I forget what I have and have not shared.

#oops

So for the next few weeks while I’m on a “no spend” (nope, that’s not me crying. Just cutting onions ?) I’ll take you around different areas of my home and go over everything I thrifted in that vignette/wall/furniture decorating.

Let’s snoop about the surface of my vintage Lane dresser then shall we?

Doll sized wicker peacock chair, bone inlay inspired frame, agate slice collection on soda crate, wooden puzzle

(Yes, a basket fell off my wall and I didn’t pick it up ?)

Of course there’s my peacock on peacock on peacock set up with the thrifted doll sized peacock chair with the peacock feather with the peacock clip.

Soda crate with rock and agate collection and a wooden puzzle

And in the middle of the credenza/media cabinet, I have my soda crate with agate, crystal and stone collection. And a wooden puzzle I picked up recently at Goodwill. This puzzle ended up being harder than it looked, but I still play around with it for a challenge.

Rattan tray with campaign style coaster set

And on the far right I’ve moved the rattan tray up here and it keeps the little target vase I picked up on clearance that I use for incense, an apothecary jar for the ugliest, and candle, my box of nag champa, and a box of coasters with a campaign style look.

Before we jump into my feautures for this week, I want to share that we have a guest host posting with us today. So check out their blog post by clicking on her face below and then check her out on Instagram and everything, too.

Global Boho Art Prints: Boho Styling

July 26, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

global boho art styled spaces

To piggy back on yesterday’s post about adding art as a layer of a globally decorated space, I wanted to round up some of my favorite art that has global boho flair to it. Since thrifting isn’t accessible to everyone and a lot of art on places like Etsy are first come first serve, I went with Minted as the retailer I’ll feature today because there’s essentially enough to go around for all of you who read here should you decide to buy a piece or not. So how about some global boho art to feast your eyes on today?

Hopefully you’ll find something here today that you love. Enjoy browsing!

Art From Other Cultures

July 25, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Week 3 of the “Get The Global Look” series is here. As Katie Gavigan Interiors, Casa Watkins Living and myself walk you through creating a global style space, we’ve tried to break it down into bite size layers. Now that we’ve set the foundation of the space with furniture and we’ve added texture and interest to the space with textiles, it’s time for us to start getting personal. And one of the most personal pieces you can put in a space is Art. Because everyone gravitates towards different styles and types of art, I cannot tell you exactly what to put in your space. But hopefully these ideas and all our ideas combined will help you find what speaks to you.

So we’re speaking of a global style which means encompassing some or all decor influenced and gathered from cultures around the world. There’s a ton of flexibility on how exactly you want to interpret that. And because the majority of the world’s population doesn’t have a lot of practical use for art, there’s a lot of different “art” to choose from other than the standard print in frame.

Here’s what I personally love, own versions of and recommend you start with:

Japanese Hand Painted Plates and Silk

Imari ceramics are my personal favorite, but I’ve also seen painted silk screens that would add a very interesting oriental vibe to any space.

Chinoiserie Framed Mirrors

BAM BOO MIRRORS. They’re quite literally perfection and you need at least one in your life. Go as simple or as ornate as you can handle.

Framed Fabrics

Remember all those incredible textiles we chatted about last week? Sometimes you can’t figure out how to use them as pillows, blankets, etc. So frame it (or free hang it) and you’ll have instant beautiful, rich art. You can read up more about my crush on textiles and ways to use them here.

Baskets

African baskets are the bees knees, but that’s not the only place to get baskets worthy of display on your walls. Mexico and South America have strong traditions in basket weaving techniques, too.

Wall Hanging

I don’t know that there’s much I can say about weavings that would be all that different than what I’ve said about them before. They’re fun to DIY, they bring in a gorgeous element of texture and interest and their impact in limited only by your willingness to let them take over the space or let them stay understated.

Art depicting landscapes, architecture and life abroad.

Do I need to elaborate on this one? Pick a pretty place abroad and stick it on your wall. I did this in my bedroom with a free photo of Morocco (or so it says, I don’t for sure) from pixabay that I had framed through Framebridge for my hallway and now bedroom.

Try your hand at DIY and recreate techniques from around the world.

Think Shibori, Weavings or an abstract art using colors and patterns from your favorite culture.

I hope this little 101 on global boho art has given you some ideas for decorating your own global space.

Your Homework:

Want to get the global style look in your home? Make sure you’re following the weekly challenges to get you moving in the right direction! Week 1 and Week 2.

This Week: Explore the different options for global wall art. Check out everything we’ve shared and then some. Then pick a piece you normally wouldn’t gravitate towards and put it in your home. This is going to be the most challenging because it’s going to teach you to play with colors, patterns and balancing a space visually with different elements.
