Free Valentine’s Day Printable: I Naturally Select You

February 7, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

There’s just one week left until the beloved, or dreaded, Valentine’s holiday. If you like to give your friends, family and loved ones something a bit unique or you just have a great sense of humor, the cards at the store can fall a little flat (get it, because they’re paper and paper is flat? Ha… ha.)

So I whipped up a second printable for those of you who aren’t sure about my Turkish terms of endearment printables I shared yesterday. This one is for your Science nuts. I, for one, appreciate math and science to a pretty high degree. So I hope you will get the humor in this one!

Print it as a card, print it and frame it, or print a bunch of these to pass out to your coworkers. I’m sure everyone with get a good giggle out of it 🙂

DIY Moroccan Wedding Blanket Pillow

February 6, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

FB_IMG_1486355182324

If I could narrow down my obsessions to just two things that I could translate to a Valentine DIY, it’s be my adoration for all things Turkish and moroccan wedding blankets. Since about the age of 11, I started becoming fascinated with the textiles, architecture, customs, and decor that come out of Turkey and that region of the world. I had a Turkish penpal at the age of 12 and the fondness has grown more and more for the country, it’s history, it’s culture and it’s people. Last year I started studying and learning the Turkish language so I wanted to incorporate that somehow in this project. And the later obsession, moroccan wedding blankets is quite simple. They’re beautiful and textural and I love their story.

Originally I’d thought of taking on the ridiculous idea to add Turkish terms of endearment spelled out in sequin trim in a Moroccan wedding blanket inspired pillow. The further into the project I got, the more I realize it would work a whole lot better if I kept those two focuses separate. So in this post, I’m sharing the tutorial for how I made my handira inspired pillow. I’ll share the other project as well as projects from two of my very good friends at the end of this post.

the more you know

If you don’t know much about moroccan wedding blankets, here’s a little back story: Moroccan wedding blankets are traditionally called Handira and even Tamizart in some places. Most involve the use of patterned bands, with talismanic symbols, and sequins, sequins thought to ward of evil spirits. The blankets are usually started when the daughter is young since they are time consuming to make. It’s part of her dowry for when she weds. Tradition is fading though as the blankets become more and more of a fad with demands from the outside world for them to be made. Many families sell theirs because authentic ones catch a bigger payout than newly made ones for resale.

So now that we know their place in the world of love, now you know why I’d immediately think to incorporate the craft, or rather the look since I won’t be replicating any traditional techniques here, in a Valentine DIY.

tutorial

This tutorial will take you through the steps to create a 16 inch pillow with an envelope enclosure.

1. Cut Trim Materials To 17 Inches

2. Cut One 17 Inch Square Piece of Fabric and One 17 Inch Wide By 22 Inch Long Piece of Fabric

3. Cut 22 Inch Long Piece In Half

20170205_225207

4. Dry Fit Trim To Perfect Arrangement- Leave Half Inch At Top And Bottom

5. Use Liquid Stitches To Adhere Trim To 17 Inch Square Fabric

6. Place The Two Pieces Cut In Step 3 Overlapping To Fit Over 17 Inch Pillow

7. Use Embroidery Thread And Needle To stitch The Pieces Together

The glue I picked up takes 30 minutes to dry. But I’ve picked up some before take 24 hours. So be sure to pay attention to that! You can make your pillow match your style. Just look up Moroccan wedding blankets on Etsy to get those creative juices flowing. And… here’s how mine turned out!

Ideas for refreshing every space of your home

February 3, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Tuesday was reveal day for my and 12 other stylists, designers, and enthusiasts to share a space we’d been working on refreshing for the previous 3 weeks. There’s a plethora of styles and rooms of the house that have been refreshed so I wanted break down exactly what projects you can use to make a refreshing impact in your home. Most of these are projects you can start and finish in a single weekend. What’s better than that?

Ideas For Refreshing Every Space Of Your Home

Print At Home Art

eclectic-botanical-global-boho-prints

I chose these 4 prints for the barren piece of wall. They tie in the pink and green theme of the rest of the space. I’m also infatuated with the night sky and the culture, architecture and textiles of Turkey. You can find these and more prints here.

glam-romantic-bedroom-with-free-hello-gorgeous-printable

For the bedroom, or even a bathroom, this “Good Morning Gorgeous” print is available for download and print here courtesy of Vintage Romance Style. There’s even a coordinating “Hello Handsome” should your household roll that way 🙂

Shelfie Styling

Bold-modern-playroom-reveal-shelf-styling-with-plants-and-wood-accents-This-is-our-Bliss

Even a kid’s space can get a chic, interesting update with some shelfie styling that incorporates the style of the rest of the home with playful, children’s touches. There’s more shelfie goodness here on This Is Our Bliss.

Boho Mid century eclectic china cabinet shelfie styling

The shelves of a classic mid century piece of furniture can enhance the other styles of a space by choosing frames and displaying collections that match the style of the rest of the home. Even if you’re stuck with piece of furniture you don’t find to be “your style,” it can be the perfect spot to display things that are. In my case, I love mixing in midcentury, but hopefully you get the point 😉

Update Lighting

Apartment-Guest-Room-Office-Makeover-glamorous-chic-lighting

Lighting doesn’t have to be a massive impact in a space. But updating older fixtures and ones that don’t match the rest of the room can bring a sense of completeness that you’ll feel in the every day. For a bold, chic, glam space, size appropriate crystal sconces flanking a bed are the perfect touch. There are more glam, bold and chic ideas here on Monica Wants It.

dining-room-chic-update-lighting

With so many dark pieces, it really brightens up a room to bring in an elegant brushed golden hued fixture. It’s the most visually heavy piece in the space, but that’s a good thing. Well designed rooms have balance. More of this space can be seen here on Sharon Joyce Interiors.

1111

eclectic-style-living-room-green-curtains-new-sofa

A tired looking space can be completely rejuvenated by replacing just one piece of furniture. It doesn’t have to be the worst worn piece and it doesn’t have to be the largest piece. Naturally either of those will have the biggest impact like this sofa did for Casa Watkins Living space that you can see more of here.

bright-tropical-chic-office

The piece that really drives home a tropical feel in this space is the rattan chair. There’s nods to the style throughout the space, but changing out a traditional office chair for this rattan one was the perfect move. Get more ideas for refreshing an office space here courtesy of Iris Nacole.

Purge The Old and Unused

Eclectic-Playroom-Office-Refresh

For a perfect example of what simply purging does, this space from Bigger Than The Three Of Us shows exactly what impact that has. No paint, no fancy lighting, no extensive gallery wall to distract you from what is missing. The space is beautiful and functional and that’s what matters.

Utilize The Power Of Paint

Chic-Art-and-Black-walls

You’ll never match the dramatic power of painting an entire space a deep hue. If you’re after drama, just do it. In fact, if you’re craving impact but are loving everything about your space, paint is probably the way to go. See more of this dramatic space here on Domicile 37.

bright-colorful-thrifty-chic-boho-living-room-painted-fireplace

If you can’t paint your walls or just don’t want to or they’re already a perfect hue, paint something else for impact! This neon yellow color speaks a loud happy vibe into this space alongside every other color of the rainbow. For more of this colorful boho space, visit The Thrifty Hippie on Instagram here.

Replace Your Rug

Livingroom-reveal-coastal-rug

Replacing your existing rug (or adding one if you don’t already have one) is like replacing sheets on a bed. The impact can be as loud as you want but it’s still refreshing on a soul cleansing level. See more of the impact this rug made in Pocket Of Posies space here.

Try Wallpaper

farmhouse-chic-herb-wallpaper-backed-linen-cabinet

Using wallpaper in a small place like the back of a cabinet is a small touch but it’ll bring a refreshing touch to the everyday activities involved with using that cabinet. Even small details have an impact in the spaces we bring them to. For more small and big changes made to Seeking Lavender Lane’s spaces, visit the reveal here.

wallpaper-kitchen-botanical-print-japanese-apartment

Once a space that was lacking in the impactfully, mood enhancing touches that can always be found in Up To Date Interior’s home, wallpaper brought a cool modern change to the space. The botanical print is on trend and matches the wood tones in the space perfectly. Click here for more of this japanese apartment refresh.

Build A Focal Point

blue-eclectic-modern-bedroom-wood-headboard

There are so many innovations with wood and faux wood products nowadays that building a focal piece is easier than ever. For the tutorial on this headboard, click here to visit Fresh Crush.

We’re still pretty early on in the new year, are there any spaces you’re hoping to make over this year?

Airy bohemian dining room

January 31, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Today is reveal day for the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge. And I’m happy to say my dining room is looking beyond refreshed! There’s a few things I just have to have in every space of my home because they make my soul happy and fill me with energy. Plants are the main one. Something about their life brings me life. I enjoy caring for them, looking at them, living with them. Naturally green ends up being a major color in every space I design but I have also long loved the color pink and it’s various shades because it compliments green so well. Being a lifelong obsessee over the beach and tropical locations, that lust trickles into spaces through prints, wicker and specificallly in this place the wallpaper. I’ve also been infatuated with midcentury furniture since we bought out 1950’s built home. Thrifting always has a place in my heart thanks to a poor childhood and even moreso in my adult life as I’ve dicosvered it to be the best way to find unique, story infused decor. A sense of airiness, a lot of bohemian style, eclectic vibes and a little influence from the trending cali style and that wraps up my dining room!

As is normally the case with these kinds of things, I’ll explain things a bit further later since the post will be so picture heavy. Leave questions and comments in the form at the end of the post so I can make sure I’ve covered everything you’re curious about 🙂

Once more, before we dive into things, here’s the moodboard I originally shared:

The Best Is Yet To Come Sign from Target

As a reminder, here’s the weekly work I’d forecasted:

week 1: Clear Room, Wallpaper, Thrift Furniture and Accessories, Rehome/Donate/Sell whatever isn’t staying

week 2: Touch up Paint, Refinish Table, Hang Curtains

  • I ended up not doing any of these things. I found the table on craigslist on a whim and decided it fit the vibe of the space better than refinishing the other table. I also decided last minute against curtains. Once the pieces started coming into the room, I felt like the curtains would take away from what was going in so that idea was nixed. I would cross off touch up paint but I left that task up to my husband because he wanted to help. Unfortunately, and you can probably see it in some of the photos, he didn’t mix the paint well and he let spots drip. So I have to go back in and sand those down, mix the paint properly and go back over those spots. Oh well 🙂

week 3: Hang Artwork, Assemble Furniture Placement

week 4: Reveal!

future work: Complete Trim Work Project, Restain Floors, Built In Half Walls, Adding: Painting the lower part of the walls. I feel like this space would be perfect with a darker color below the wallpaper.

Pom Pom Basket Planter

January 24, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A room makeover just wouldn’t be a room makeover with my friends and I getting a little DIY on. For my space, the dining room, I’ve been doing some wallpapering. It’s time consuming and tough work so I’ve taken an easy approach to most everything else. Just to add a little whimsical fun to the space, I knew a simple DIY pompom basket planter was the perfect project to take on.

How To Make A Pompom Basket

Supplies:

Pompom trim

Woven basket

Hot glue gun

How-To:

1. Wrap the Pompom trim around the basket and cut to fit. Repeat as many times as needed for the number of rows desired.

2. Place a small dot of hot glue onto the basket and press the end of the trim into the glue. Glue down trim working all the way around the basket every 2-3 inches.

3. Glue remaining end to sit flush against the start of the piece.

4. Repeat as many times as needed to give the basket all the Pompom effect needed.

20170123_235915

20170123_235939

And, of course, nothing wraps up a fun little DIY session much like loving on my furry pup. If you don’t have a furry companion to love on after you complete your project, you can always just give yourself a pat on the back. ?

Anyways, here’s how my pompom basket planter turned out:
