Statement Bathroom Decor: Lanai Mirror

April 2, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Statement Mirrors. We put them in every room of those house. Statement mirrors are popularly used above buffets, behind sofas, over dressers and fireplace mantles. But one place I don’t often see a statement mirror is in the bathroom. And I find that fascinatingly odd because the mirror is the one and only necessary art piece in the room. Especially if you own your house, I have to give you the biggest encouraging thumbs up to go for the mirror of your design dreams. Because you can always take it with you when you move and use it in your new bathroom or another room.

Tip!

Ditch the complicated gallery wall. Go with a sophisticated large scale mirror to fill your wall space.

Previously in my bathroom I had a statement mirror. It was a moroccan style mirror and it’s gorgeous. I’m definitely not getting rid of it, just using it elsewhere in the house. It just didn’t have the “wow” factor the space really needed. So when a PR rep reached out to me to see if I would be interested in reviewing the Lanai Mirror from Serena & Lily, I restrained myself from saying “heck yes!” and agreed in a slightly more professional manner. The mirror was sent to me free of charge. I want to disclose that up front.

the more you know

So, here are my thoughts:

This mirror is heavy. And as a result, it needs to be packaged well to prevent it from being damaged in transit. Thankfully, the mirror came packaged in a careful and thoughtful manner. All of the bamboo that sticks out had specially shaped pieces of foam around them to ensure the mirror truly stayed in place and cushioned on it’s way here.

So these babes aren’t doing as well of a job at concealing my paint fail but maybe they’re being that helpful friend, encouraging me to Get. It. Done. Already. Like, really, the easiest thing I need to fix. Lazy city. Lol. I opted to move the Palm into the living room. ? it survives! I really, really want it to thrive! Rainy day over here. What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods? #showmeyourboho #eatcraftdiy

But really, that’s the boring stuff. If you want to know what I think of a $400 mirror, you probably want to know about the mirror, amiright? Like I said, it’s heavy. And that’s because the bamboo is real, lacquered bamboo. It is not plastic, it is not dried out, hollowed out, cheap pieces of bamboo. The lattice, interlocking design goes overtop a single piece of mirror. It’s not a bunch of small mirrors cut to fit in all the little cavities. I was very, very dissapointed with a mirror I bought from a popular flash sale site years ago that did that. When the cheaper route is taken and the mirror is not solid with the design resting overtop it, the image in the mirror is distorted. Plus, all those extra grooves make dust collection inevitable and impossible to clean. Also, the backing is more than just cheap MDF stapled on. This mirror is quality.

New mirror vibes ✌?✌ #showmeyourboho

A post shared by Corinna | Hampton Roads, VA (@adesignerathome) on Mar 28, 2017 at 5:15pm PDT

It’s really freaking pretty. Like, you guys. Really. It’s a warm and lively raw bamboo finish. The mirror itself is of really good quality. The interlocking bamboo pieces are done in a way that looks seamless (and they’re spliced and connected in a way that it won’t ever come loose).

Oh, it can also be hung vertically and horizontally. There is strong hardware on the back to hang it both ways.

Would I buy this mirror? Yes. I have spent this amount of money on a mirror before. And I absolutely, in my mirror buying experiences, beleive this to be worth the money.

Shop

Now, I’m not a salesman. But if a tropical vibe is your thing and you’re in the market for a gorgeous mirror, you can buy it here. I couldn’t find where they participate in rebate sites like Ebates.com, but when I went looking for coupon codes, I found that they have a refer a friend program. So if you’d like 20% off (that’s almost $80 off!), here’s the special link. And you can sign up to refer friends as well and get rewarded (I’m not sure what the reward is yet since that part was vague when I got the link). Then once you’re on the site you can just search “Lanai Mirror.” Either way you shop, if you shop, it’s a good mirror that I think a lot of you would like.

Let me know if you enjoyed this review, if you have questions and if you’d like to see more reviews by leaving me a comment below. Be well and I’ll chat with you again soon.

Epic Etsy Find: Encapsulated Flower Crystals

March 24, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

The next discovery in my “Epic Etsy Finds & The Shops Behind Them” series is a a wonderfully whimsical one. Handmade encapsulated tumbled crystals and dried flowers are set in a resin mold shaped like various sized crystals. They’re lightweight and curiously interesting to look at. Love by my friends and family so far, it’s always an item that draws the fingers. Though not actual crystals themselves, there still seems to be an energy within them that radiates an energy that everyone must feel. Solaras Garden is where you can find these “crystals.”

Do you find yourself drawn to elements of the earth? Drawn to the sea, rocks, crystals and fresh breeze? You probably have your own crystals, precious stones, plants and carved wood decor about your home. You may find yourself having hippie, gypsy or bohemian tendencies. If you do, you’re probably always on the look for unique decor. Handmade or found items that speak their own unique tale within your own life’s story.

A post shared by Corinna | Hampton Roads, VA (@adesignerathome) on Mar 10, 2017 at 5:35pm PST

Shanna has an array of crystals available in her shop. Filled with dried flowers, seahorses and more, they can be bought in singles or sets.

She sent me a set of three (with no obligation to write a blog post I’ll add). So far I’ve enjoyed displaying them together the most. I have a thing about sets and displaying things in threes so this is working best for me. I currently have them displayed on shelves I put up above the toilet in my bathroom. I encourage lingering no matter what the room in my home. A sensory experience is what I lust after and these have been the perfectly interesting piece.

As with everything unique and peculiar, you just have to check them out. You can visit her shop here, but I’ll share a few of my favorites below if you just want a quick glance. I hope you’ve enjoyed this find within the series!

Boho Decor: Spring Pillows And Throws

March 20, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Happy Spring! It’s the time to enjoy the warmer days, cool breeezes, spring showers and fresh flowers! And with those seasonal changes, we need to freshen up our interiors. There’s no longer a need for heavy throw blankets and cozy throw pillows. We can use lighter fabrics and brighter patterns to fit in line with the changes outside. While switching some things up in my own home, I started looking online for some fresh items to pull into the mix. Here’s what I’m loving for this Spring:

Boho Spring Pillows and Throws

$100 Room Makeover Challenge

March 15, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

March-challenge-graphic

My update is coming at you kind of late because I keep running into road blocks and creative indecision with the space. I started with such a clear vision and now that we’re nearing the end I’m having decision remorse. I’ve never constrained myself to a budget before. I’m actually struggling.

Mirror was taken from another room, lumber is for a DIY console table to add weight and warmth to the end of the hallway.

Both ends are now lit but the lights don't match and I don't love them in this space.

I’m wondering if using this planter basket as a lampshade will give me the feel I’m after.

What have I actually done?

I’ve patched the walls and touched up the white paint. I thought I’d be happy with this since I loved the way the refreshed white paint in the living room turned out. I was wrong. I don’t love it. But I’m not sure I have the time nor budget to do anything about it.

I stole the mirror from my bathroom. The bathroom has loads of good vibes already and I needed to steal a bit of that for this space.

I changed out the light fixture for the rattan one that was in my bedroom. But again, I’m not sure I love it.

Do I love anything yet?

No. I don’t know what is wrong with me ?

What am I going to do about it?

Keep my fingers crossed. I still need to paint the doors and I hope that brings a more polished and finished vibe to the space.

I also need to pick up an additional piece of lumber to get the console put together and then I’ll paint it. Having a piece of furniture in the space should help bring warmth.

Also, need to get the mirror hung but I want to wait until the console is up so I can make sure it’s hung at an aesthetically pleasing height.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed on my lighting situation for now. Maybe something will pop up last minute. A girl can hope!

Check out the updates for all the other spaces, too!

Bohemian Spring Mantel

March 14, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It’s doesn’t feel or look like we’re nearing the end of Winter and are transitioning into greeting Spring, but alas, it is that time of year! Spring decorating means a lot of things to a lot of people. For some that has an Easter flair to it, for others it’s all about the floral. Whatever spring decor looks like to you, there’s a lot to be inspired by and I’m going to show you today where I ended up in my own Spring mantel decorating. Bohemian vibes in an airy, colorful way.

Decorating for Spring: Bohemian Spring Mantel

Pretty and Airy Teal Bohemian Spring Mantel

The Amy Dowling of My Life From Home invited bloggers within the community to come together and collectively share our Spring specific decorated mantels. Of course I was on board for that! I love sharing my style of decorating, especially when it’s something as special as welcoming a new season. If you’re new here, hello! My name is Corinna and you’re at A Designer At Home where I share decorating tips and inspiration for the boho abode.

Spring Decorating: Bohemian Mantel

My fireplace mantel is not attached to a functioning fireplace. It’s vintage and necessary because there is no fireplace in my house and I crave architectural interest. Teal is my favorite color and I love to have a burst of it in every room. For the living room (and in the future, for whatever room it may move to) that’s the fireplace mantel.

Spring Decorating: Bohemian Mantel

I’m a maximalist decorator but I tend to tone down holiday or seasonal decor because I already change things around enough. The additional excuse that we’re headed to a new season is too much to add to this Decorating ADD train. But I do enjoy welcoming in new seasons by giving them a nod in subtle ways.

Because our son is quite young, we still do a lot of interactive play on the floor. To make that more enjoyable experience, I keep poufs, pillows and cushions handy for sitting on. And while I’m a textile junkie, especially fond of rugs and layering them, I do keep a bit of bare floor space because matchbox cars race especially fast on them.

Spring Decorating: Bohemian Mantel

Previously I had deep maroon colored tassels on either side of the mantel, But I wanted to brighten things up and add an element of airiness with the knotted garland. I actually salvaged this off of the hammock I had last summer after my foot when through the thing and rendered it useless. Le sigh. It was a beautiful hammock. But it’s beauty lives on by embellishing my mantel. Also, in the name of airiness, I replaced the hamsa with a thrifted mirror.

Boho-ifying A Hand Me Down Sofa

March 9, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Last weekend I was gifted a small sofa. It’s one of those loveseat style fold out sofas that turn into a bed. It’s a light denim fabric and a style of sofa I wouldn’t ever buy for myself but a free sofa when you’ve got a spot begging for one is a given. Take it! But light denim wash doesn’t jive with the rest of the space. I couldn’t spend any money to make it fit into the space so I took to looking at my hoard stash of things to boho-ify it. I found 3 different combinations that turn this hand-me-down sofa into a bohemian sofa, perfect for lounging on.

I took a colorful elephant tapestry, a turquoise dyed coverlet and a fuchsia boho bed sheet as the base for each of the boho sofas I put together. I also pulled in throw pillows I’ve got about the house, an indigo mudcloth and a chevron throw. Which one do you dig most?

old sofa covered in turquoise hand dyed bed coverlet with indigo mudcloth and mongolian fur pillow- hand me down sofa done bohemian

I’m not afraid to pick favorites here. I really like the way the tapestry one looks. I’ve left it for now even though I don’t like using orange in my home. There’s just something about it here that I’m digging.

Starting LDN and everything else I’ve tried for CFS so far…

I’ve been taking low dose naltrexone (ldn) for just over a month at this point and I wanted to share an update on how it’s been going thus far. I started taking ldn because I tried everything else in an attempt to feel better. At my last PCP appointment, I told him I’d be trying […]

Checkerboard: The Latest Insta-Trend

You ever first see a trend and think, “nope, not for me.” That was, and still a little, me with the checkerboard trend. I’ve never liked checkerboard walls or floors. Simple Minty Eye Makeup Look (Indigenous Beauty Brands)

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]
