My Vintage, Global Bohemian Home Style Mix

May 17, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Not one person’s home is truly just one style. Right? Besides spaces specifically designed to emulate a specific -esign style, there are influences from other styles in all of our spaces. My home encompasses inspiration from multiple vintage eras, many different areas around the world and it all falls under the very loose bohemian style. Being a thrifter through necessity and love, some styles come through purely because the piece fits the bills, and others are specifically sourced out to add to the overall vibe of the space. Either way, I’m going to break down a bit about how and why I’ve gotten to my style.

If you’re new here- Hi! I’m Corinna and A Designer At Home is my musings from home with interior design passions. I garden, take selfies with my cats, walk everywhere possible barefoot and love the color teal. I’m a boho momma and I love to share my adventures in creating a sanctuary within my home. Big thanks to Stephanie from Casa Watkins for pulling together this My Home Style Blog Hop: Mix, Match, Coordinate Edition. At the end of this post you’ll find links to the other bloggers sharing their styles today.

Vintage:

Vintage style in itself is vague and all encompassing. It’s generally accepted that an item should be older than 20 years to be considered vintage. But if an item or looks like it’s from 1920-1980, it’s essentially vintage style. I love pieces from the 1950s through 1970’s. Mid century modern and hollywood regency are my favorites and I love using them together because they are on relatively opposite ends of the design spectrum.

Global:

I’m always trying to balance my adoration of other culture’s decor, style and items that are produced by the people of those cultures with respect. I know fast fashion gets a lot of heat for cultural appropriation and I think a lot of those same arguments can be said for home decorating. I truly find it beautiful though and incorporate as many authentic, fair trade pieces as possible, mixed in with thrifted pieces and a few inspired by pieces to round things out.

Boho:

Plant filled, second hand scores boho eclectic mantle decorating reflection of boho tapestry and bohemian bedding Rattan-Mirror-Hollywood-regency-meets-bohemian-style

I freaking love the boho you guys. If only I knew that the internet was going to be what it is now when I was in high school. My bedroom was legit bomb dot com. And the first couple of places I lived in before I met my husband were decked out with tapestries and the like. I’ve since refined my style a bit but it’s still true to what I really enjoy in a space. And we should love our homes, love being in our homes and the way they look. Lots of layers, patterns, texture, whimsy and plants make up the best boho spaces.

My Tip For Blending Styles:

Choose one style for your furniture, one style for your accessories and one style for your fabrics. It’s a really easy way to work in multiple styles without losing your mind trying to match things up. The more you build the space, the more you’ll get the hang of what will and won’t work in the space.

I hope you’ve found this break down of my main styles interesting and helpful in some way. Don’t forget: Comment below what styles you find most in your home. Which styles are your favorite?

Hanging Decorative Tiles The Stress Free Way

May 15, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Displaying decorative tiles in your home is just one more way you can add color, texture, pattern and interest. Many of us immediately equate tiles with a permanent fixture though. And that’s really not the case. You can display them as decor much like you would plates or baskets. Especially intricate, handcrafted tiles. Simply hanging them sounds great until you realize they don’t have built in hardware for hanging.

Some Solutions:

  • Easel on a surface
  • Plate hangers
  • Double sided tape
  • Hanging hardware & a heavy duty adhesive

These solutions didn’t quite jive with me and I’ll briefly explain why. I haven’t found an easel that I like. Double sided tape will destroy the wall and could fail. And I didn’t want to make any permanent changes to the tiles like gluing hardware to it.

Of the proposed solutions on my internet search, the plate hangers seemed the most promising. But I’m concerned that bending the plate hanger to fit the thickness of a tile may not work out as well as I’d hope. I had an idea that wouldn’t cost me anything- jute twine!

Here’s a very quick video demonstrating how I used the jute to securely hold the plate.

The jute adds even more texture. I had it on hand. It’s a long lasting solution that’s painlessly reversible. It almost frames the tile and I really like the way that looks.

The Frida tile was a gift from my friend at The Cozy Casita. She’s the one who made the tiled tray I’ve told you guys about before. And the smaller tile with the blue bird was won in a small giveaway hosted by Desha Peacock on Instagram. You can check out Etsy for pretty decorative tiles or check out local ReStores for tiles that have been salvaged.

Also, I think this is a good way to distract from tiles in a bathroom/kitchen that aren’t looking so pretty or your style. Hang a couple over top older/boring tiles. Or as a pseudo backsplash if you rent or don’t have the budget to install a backsplash in a backsplash-less space.

Well, that’s all my thoughts on this project. Let me know if you have any other ideas for hanging tiles in the comments below. And help me out by sharing this post!

My Husband & My Vegan & Cruelty Free Ulta Haul

May 12, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

I try to lead a cruelty free, eco-friendly home. And that means I spend some time researching brands and ingredients to see if they will work for us. If you’re new here, There’s myself (27), my husband (28) and our son (5). My husband has psoriasis but otherwise normal skin with breakouts on his back. I have sensitive eczema prone skin, fragrances generally cause me to be itchy, I don’t normally have break outs but I am very dry. And our son is normal (for now ;)).

Recently Ulta was 15% cash back on Ebates.com so I took the opportunity to pick up products I’ve been wanting to try for myself as well as products I think my husband should try.

Turkish Jewelry Inspired Wood Bead Garland DIY

May 1, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

A big part of making decorating decisions for me is to take inspiration from some of my favorite places in the world. You know I love middle eastern, Asian and South American style decor. So when the theme for this month’s The Global Styler series was announced as, “My World’s Favorite Place,” I was stoked.

My favorite place in the whole world is a place I’ve never been to. And I have no idea why I’ve had this long standing obsession with it but I don’t question it. I have a spiritual connection to Turkey.

Before I dive into the inspiration and how to for my creation for the series, I want to give a quick run down of what this series is. Just in case you’re unfamiliar, The Global Styler is a monthly series where myself, Kathy from Up To Date Interiors, Jessica from The Handmade Home and, the one who brought this series to fruition, Stephanie from Casa Watkins Living take on a theme and share our ideas and tutorials. Catch new posts on the first Monday of every month!

inspiration

I’ve always enjoyed jewelry. Wearing it, looking at it and making it. It’s something I haven’t done a lot of since becoming a mom but as I search for myself more and more, I find myself going back to these old loves. Turkish jewelry is as beautiful as youd imagine any jewelry drom that part of the world. I wanted to take that as my inspiration to make the trending wood bead garland my own.

Arrange Beads In Order. My pattern is Medium Round Wood Bead, Medium Round Wood Bead, Medium Oval Wood Bead, Medium Round Wood Bead, Medium Round Wood Bead, Silver Spacer, Blue Glass Bead, Silver Spacer, and Repeat. I gave either “tail” of the garland a Small Blue Bead and Round Wood Bead detail. And in the center of the garland I added 3 Silver Pendants with Silver spacer, Blue Glass Bead and Silver Spacer on either side.

Arabian Turkish middle eastern jewelry inspired wood beaded garland

It takes some time to sit down and sort them all out, but it’s worth it to pre plan otherwise you may run out of beads to make the pattern even on either side. Simpler patterns won’t need as much time to plan out other than making sure you have an even number of beads to alternate the pattern long enough for the space you plan to display it.

Thread the needle onto the embroidery thread and start putting beads onto it. Leave a bit of slack if you’ll be hanging the garland on hooks like I did.

Knot the thread over the last bead to secure everything in place.

How I fixed my Shadowban on Instagram

April 28, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It’s been ages since we’ve chatted. And because of that it feels super weird to jump back in with my thoughts on the Instagram shadowban since that’s not what I normally chat about here. But, I’ve been seeing everyone freaking about it. Wondering if they’ve been shadow banned. Theorizing why engagement is down and how Instagram targets who to shadow ban and who not to shadow ban. I think I’ve figured it out! At least for myself. And instead of direct messaging each and every one of my good friends while everyone else sits confused, I thought I’d throw up this post and hope Google does me justice and shares it with you all.

Here’s the Test:

In a recent Instagram post, I did what I usually do. I put my caption and the most relevant hashtag. Then I did what any other Instagrammer does and buried the paragraph of other tags in a separate comment. You know, keeping the caption looking clean and pretty and such.

I tested my page on this ban checker site.

And as I started to theorize, this was the result.

Getting shadowbanned and how I figured out how to remove the shadow ban

The only hashtag that I showed up in was the one I used in the caption.

So I went in and removed that comment and edited the caption to include all those tags.

And here’s the result!

I lifted my Instagram shadowban and it was stupid simple to fix it

Immediately fixed!

I’ll keep playing with it a bit more. And like I said, I don’t normally explore these things nor write about them so please don’t think I’m trying to play expert. The proof is in the pudding! I had to share my findings 🙂

Try it for yourself and let me know in the comments if it worked for you. And if it did, spread the word!

Update 1: Tried it with another post- results still in line with theory!

Update 2: When testing other posts of mine, I liked around the site a bit more and found this on the site I me tiones above.

“A post on Facebook says moving hashtags from the comments to the caption removed the ban, is this right?

No one knows how the internal algorithm works (other than Instagram). Yes, it removed the ban on that post but there is no workaround for the general case. There is no “trick” to avoiding the ban or cheating this test”

So my theory isn’t that original but it’s okay. It just means there may be something to it more than just me being a conspiracy theorist 😉

I was Instagram shadowbanned and I Fixed My shadow ban!

Simple Minty Eye Makeup Look (Indigenous Beauty Brands)

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]
