Budget Curb Appeal Updates

June 16, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

I know that curb appeal is important, but I don’t generally act on that knowledge. And it’s not because we don’t spend time in our front yard. We actually spend tons of time there because my son enjoys having immediate access to greet all the neighbors. What seems to hold me back is the permanence and cost of the changes I want to make.

Landscaping gets surprisingly expensive fast.

Fencing is ridiculously expensive.

And painting a house takes a lot of paint.

Looking put the window. Giant sunflowers, aqua yard chairs, elephant sunshine. - @adesignerathome

Those are really the main three things I want to do with our front yard. I want lots of plants lining a cute fence. And a house in my dream color: teal (or anything, really, just not that brick!). But after a bathroom remodel, a new roof, and moving the hot water heater (and the electrical work that goes into that) we’re pretty kaput on funds.

I couldn’t just do nothing though.

Psychologically, it matters to enjoy what you see when you pull up to your house. So I made little changes with what I had on hand (and a few other things) to make the exterior a bit more cottage charming.

First thing I did was paint the landing, door and front steps.

Then I used a spare shelf bracket, dollar store hanging planter and free plant from a recent festival the little and I went to to make all the flimsy white aluminum work look a bit more cheerful.

Pots from previous years and dirt I received free in a buy this get dirt free sale a few months ago filled the pots and free herbs from my mom grow in 3 of them. Morning glories and moon flowers from seeds I had in a cabinet fill the fourth.

I mentioned free dirt in exchange for a purchase. And that purchase was raised garden bed kits. They were 4 feet square and 6 inches tall. We made some cuts to fit the rectangular space in front of the living room window and arranged other pieces to fit under a bedroom window. Leftover wood stain makes them feel more finished. I filled one bed with sunflowers, a gardenia, bulbs and a spray painted pot filled with morning glories and moon flowers again. A leftover tomato cage was flipped upside down for the flowers to climb.

Encaustic tile look alike yard pavers and customized raised garden bed kit. Aqua yard details - @adesignerathome

Yard stones painted to have a cement tile look. A boho garden in progress. @adesignerathome

In front of the beds you’ll see inexpensive grey pavers that I used the Americana Fleur De Lis stencil and black patio paint to gave a pseudo encaustic tile look.

And finally, a whimsical flag greets anyone coming up to our porch. It’s a perfect reminder for me, as I can tend to stay in a negative mood a lot of the time. But I know I can choose happiness. I just have to remember to do so. The flag is part of the lifestyle flag collection at Declaration Home. The teal color is pretty amazing, right?

Aqua front porch. Bright paint with brick home. Lifestyle boho porch flag @adesignerathome

The next step I take will either be painting the brick or putting up wood shutters. The budget will play a lot into which one of those gets done first, of course. In what ways have you made your curb appeal more appealing?

Vegan and Eco Friendly Sunscreen

June 12, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

There are a lot of helpful lists for finding products that are cruelty free. And others that are helpful in determining the environmental impact the product has on us and the planet. One of my favorite sources is the EWG.org website. Its even got a menu option after you’ve searched a brand to find out its cruelty free status. But finding a product that is good for you, the planet and the animals can take a bit more time than any one of those lists or search engines can provide. Because none of them are all inclusive and vegan specific data and lists are limited.

So when I spent all of a Sunday cleaning and researching sunscreens, it felt like I owed it to at least 1 other person out there to share what I found.

I’ve checked EWG ratings, I’ve checked leaping bunny certifications and I’ve read all the ingredient lists.

top 7 cruelty free, vegan and eco-freindly sunscreens

Top 7 Environmentally Friendly Vegan Sunscreens.

Every single one of these has an EWG rating of 1, which means it has very little bodily and environmental harm. 1 is best. They’re all also cruelty free. And if ingredient lists are current, they are also all vegan.

1. Sunology

2 oz. tube for $14.99 on Amazon

2 oz. Face for $14.99 on Amazon

2 oz. Kid for $14.99 on Amazon

Bonus* Made in USA, no fragrance

2. Suntegrity

3 oz. tube for $24.00 on Amazon

5 oz. tube for $36.00 on Amazon

1.7 oz. Tinted Face for $45.00 on Amazon

1.7 oz. Primer for  $45.00 on Amazon

Sunscreen is also available in unscented. Product is not prime eligible at the moment. Bonus* Many other skincare items are made by this brand. And their site has loads of great education information regarding zinc and sunscreens.

3. Loving Naturals

4.3 oz. for 19.75 on Amazon

4.3 oz. Sport for $19.75 on Amazon

4.3 oz. Baby for $19.75 on Amazon

Bonus* 100% Natural/Organic, Vegan, Paraben-Free, Cruelty-Free, and Gluten-Free.

4. Kiss My Face Organics

3.4 oz. tube for $14.30 on Amazon

3.4 oz. kids tube for $13.97 on Amazon

Kiss my face is not exclusively vegan. And not all of their sunscreens receive the 1 rating on EWG. The sunscreen stick, sport and the obsessively natural kids are both rated 2. Others from this brand are 3 and higher.

5. Juice Beauty

3.75 oz. Sport for 16.00 on Amazon

2.0 oz. oil-free for 29.00 on Amazon

All products that have been rated by EWG are a 1 or 2 rating. (Their CC cream is a 1!). Bonus* sustainable business practices (solar power, locally sourced ingredients), soy ink use, and support EWG and Breast Cancer Fund.

6. Goddess Garden

6 oz. for $16.19 on Amazon

3.4 oz. Face for $10.79 on Amazon

3.4 oz. Sport for $9.16 on Amazon

3.4 oz. Baby for $16.19 on Amazon (not Prime)

6 oz. Kid for  $12.30 on Amazon

3.4 oz. Kid Sport for $12.28 on Amazon (not Prime)

Bonus* Goddess Garden also deals with aromatherapy for those interested in that aspect of well being.

7. All Good

3.0 oz. tube for $15.99 on Amazon

3.0 oz. kid for $12.79 on Amazon

You win some, you lose some. They do make a plastic-free sunscreen butter but it contains beeswax and is therefore not vegan. I’ll leave the lesser of two evils decision up to you.

Screenshot_20170612-014234

Prices will vary depending on what deals are going on, both on Amazon and other retailers (including brand websites). But I wanted to give you a general idea at least by including what the list price is as I type this. I realize there are much cheaper alternatives. But if you want to do the best for yourself, animals and the planet, it will cost a bit more. Consider it an investment in a better future for yourself. And really, it’s easy to lose our perception on reality. The reality? Many people in the world don’t have access to clean water, let alone sun screen. Food for thought.

I hope you find this guide helpful. Did I include any of your favorites? Any that I missed? Let me know in the comments below!

Global Style Decor: Dining Edition

June 5, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

FB_IMG_1486355182324

Welcome again for more global decor advice from myself and some favorite ladies as part of The Global Styler series. This month we are focusing on the dining experience. Because bringing in a total global experience can be expensive to start from scratch, I’m going to share my top favorite ways of bringing the style to a table with the basics you’ll already have.

Tip!

1. Textile Table Cloth

Invest in a washable artisan made fabric. African mudcloth, serapes and suzanis are my favorite choices for this. They’re generally light enough for easy washing but vibrant and textural for that boho style.

Tip!

2. Artisan Made Centerpiece

Scour thrift stores or buy directly from reputable fair trade artisan sellers. Pottery/cermics, wooden pieces and brass are all great places to starts. You can find etched brass candlesticks and pots (plants are perfect inside these) with Asian designs. Pottery from Mexico either a large piece on its own or smaller pieces grouped together. Imari ceramics are intricate and are A perfect conversation piece. A wooden bowl, sculpture or small figurines from various countries in Africa.

Tip!

3. Mix in global dishes with existing dishes.

Buy glasses or a single dish for the table setting and use your existing dishes or inexpensive ones to fill out the rest of the table.

Once you’ve got these three spots of the dining experience complete, you can slowly build more pieces in. Every style for every space should be done in time for a true collected and well loved look.

Modern Succulent Wall Planter

June 1, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Plants are in the limelight this year. Thanks to influencers embracing and promoting the plant collecting lifestyle, we are seeing more and more products available for housing our plants. I’ve admired vintage wall mounted brass planters but there are planters in other styles showing up too! The Apollo Box reached out to see if I’d be willing to try out one of their circular wall planters in exchange for my thoughts and I was intrigued. If you are, too- keep reading!

the more you know

First off, I’ll introduce The Apollo Box. It’s a “things” shopping site. Categories range from Apparel to home decor to gifts to tech, drink ware and more. When you first hop on the site, you’ll see best sellers and new arrivals. This gives you a pretty good idea of the “things” you can expect to find on the whole site. In the menu you can choose to browse by more specific categories. Yanked straight from their about page, you can find “unique, fun, and creative products.”

Now that you’re familiar with where the product came from, let’s chat about the actual product. It came packaged well with easy to follow instructions and all the hardware needed to get it up on the wall. I used a power drill to drill out holes for the anchors and a hammer to lightly tap those in. Then used the power drill again to put the screws in through the pack piece. Then the glass slips in with metal tabs you’ll press into place to hold it still.

Boho Wall Decor- Modern Wall Planter Frame @adesignerathome

I found putting a plant in it to be a little cumbersome. The glass is higher than the backing of the frame. So you should be careful how high you lay the dirt so it’s not resting on your bare wall. This isn’t a surprise though. When you check out the product page, that’s clear in the pictures. Because it’s so small, getting everything in was tricky but not difficult. I wouldn’t say that would deter me from ever using others or from continuing to use this one.

I put my dirt and succulents in and then I gave it a bit of water and the water dripped out the bottom of the glass some. There’s no seal between the glass and the dirt so that’s not exactly shocking. That’s why I chose to put succulents in instead of something that would need moist-er soil because I guessed that would happen. Wiped up easy with a small hand towel. No worries.

Of course, faux plants are getting more and more realistic. You could avoid soil and water by using sand or rocks with faux. Just another route to go!

I find the circular shape to be a fun modern accent for any space. Modern spaces would naturally benefit from these but with my boho style, it fit right in. I like how it mixes with the textiles, colors and texture elsewhere in this corner of the living room. It also comes in yellow, black and red. Because my fingers are crossed I’ll be painting walls soon, I felt like white would forever be the most neutral.

My final thoughts? Cute and easy to use!

What do you think? Would you mix in a couple with your macrame and woven planters? Do tell boho babes!

Boho Photo A Day Challenge

May 29, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

On June 1st, we’re going to begin our first official photo a day challenge. I know what you’re thinking, those can be difficult to keep up with. And yes, they can. The hardest ones I’ve tried to keep up with were either too vague for me to think of something to post or the overall theme of the challenge wasn’t my personal aesthetic. There’s room for the boho babes to play along too.

I’ve tried to make the prompts simple and specific enough that you won’t be lost for what to post but that you can also put your own spin on things. Of course you can always recycle old pictures and post them new. I wouldn’t expect you to work in a pristine picture of your living room if the day for living room is the worst day of your life. My goal is that we can build community, get creative and see the beauty within our own boho abodes. So you’re probably anxious to see the prompts, so here you go!

the-boho-photo-a-day-challenge-30-days-of-channeling-inner-boho-hosted-by-adesignerathome

Again, the challenge will begin on June 1st so you’ve got a couple of days to start thinking about the prompts and how you may be able to play along. It’s probably helpful for many of you if I explain a little bit about why I chose the prompt for each day and a loose vision for what you can post.

Here we go!

  1. Plants are the bees knees right now. And they have a perfect place within a bohemian style home. Show off what plant babes you’ve got. Whether small or large, show off how you display them, water them, enjoy them.
  2. A messy bed freshly risen out of, the books on your bedside table, the way the light shines on your dresser. Show us the whole space, a favorite spot in the space, or how you like to enjoy the space (PG, of course).
  3. Catch a creative shot of your room through your mirror, how you use a mirror in a vignette or on it’s own, or simply share a mirror selfie.
  4. Whether you’re team light them or use them strictly as decor (or use LED ones!), candles create ambiance and fill out decor. Zoom in or zoomed out, share a shot with a candle.
  5. Interpret this one to mean a dining room, a space you dine, a night out dining, your dinner, the space you prepare what you dine or what you dine on! Photos of dining rooms, to food to plates and more are welcome this day.
  6. You’ve probably got at least one spot in your home with dreamy floors. Aged planks to tiled floors to gorgeous benis, show off how you dress up the space beneath your toes.
  7. What good boho space lacks textiles? None I tell you! Any room, any textile, show it off! I love carpets, rugs, blankets, pillows, wall hangings- them all!
  8. Everybody loves a good vignette. Doesn’t matter whether you go all in or keep it simple, show off a surface of your home you’ve styled.
  9. You know what they say, treat yo self! Plucked from the roadside, picked from the garden, painted, embroidered- you name it! Doesn’t have to fresh flowers to be shown off. Show off anything with flowers.
  10. Show off the fabulous things you’ve gathered shelfie style. Shelves on the wall, bookcase, china cabinet, or surfaces like a media cabinet, nightstand, or kitchen counter. Doesn’t have to be elaborate, but also have fun!
  11. Everyone who doesn’t have the dream kitchen and/or bathroom they’ve always wanted is going to roll their eyes, but don’t! There’s loads of fun ways to jazz up existing tile. Then there’s tiled furniture. Or even decorative tiles you’ve got on display. Don’t dismay. There are loads of ways to interpret this prompt beyond the immediate thought. Even the tiles in a favorite restaurant works!
  12. Art is open to interpretation as well. If you’ve made it, we want to see it. If you bought it, show it off! Downloaded it and framed it? That totally counts, too. Art means something different to everyone so show me what it means to you.

What To Decorate With For Boho Style

May 19, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

For years now I’ve come back to using the same types of items to decorate spaces. They’re a harmonious combination of items that look good in every space. They’re my favorites and I think it would be helpful to give you a list of those favorites in case you’re struggling with decorating, or you’re just nosey. Which trust me, I’m very nosey. So make sure you share your favorite items to decorate with in the comments below!

Scarfs: I always stop by the scarf display when I go to the thrift store because they’re an easy way to add color, pattern and texture to a space- for cheap! I love using larger scarves to embellish a table. I’ll use scarves draped over a chair for a mini upholstery change. Scarves also make pretty wall art!

Brass: I’m not yet ready to let this one go. I know it had it’s moment a few years ago, but it still lends so much to a space. Slightly rustic, aged pieces are my favorite. Brass lighting feels less polished and glam that the silvery versions. Brass animals are always welcome in any vignette I put together. And I think it’s fun to have them peeking around other pieces of decor. And planters. Brass planters! They’ll always be in style so pick one up if you get the chance!

Baskets: Always opt to use a woven basket when you have the choice. They look great as wall art, great on shelves and great tucked alongside other pieces of furniture. Line them with plastic and fill them with a plant. Stack lidded baskets to create a storage palooza table. In the kitchen and pantry, skip the plastic bins when possible and use the baskets. Baskets have an inherit warmness about them since they’re made of wood and wood is from the earth.

Gemstones/Crystals: My favorite use for crystals and gemstones is to fill in small gaps in my decor. I also enjoy incorporating them in hanging planters and vases that I make and even as drawer pulls.

collection of gems, stones and crystals nestled in a thrifted basket complete the cozy feeling for end of the hallway decor

Tapestries: Tapestries are really stinking inexpensive when you compare them to other home textiles. Because of this, I use them as curtains, to change up the look of an old sofa, as a table cloth and as shower curtains. The fabrics can be cut easily to fit a variety of uses.

Pretty Mugs: I’m a big fan of choosing pretty every day items. Dishes are a really easy place to start. And there’s something about mugs that I’m especially drawn to. Right now I have more mugs than I do friends, but I love being able to switch up that one small part of each day. Mugs are a useful accessory. Leave them out to bring a little pretty to the kitchen space. And remember, you can always use extras as small planters.

Incense: This one isn’t about visual decor as it is about the other senses that are still very much alive and in use when you enter a space. I use nag champa most of the time in my home. And there’s a plethora of decorative incense holders so it fulfills the need for visual beauty as well.

How to start a room design: pretty oriental bowl for a boho dining room

Books: If you’re not a book reader, that doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate their beauty. Many books are built in pieces of art. Displayed on a coffee table, leaned against a wall, to raise items in a vignette and as a makeshift tabletop. As long as you’re not tearing the pages out, I won’t hate you.

Whimsy: Remember how I mentioned that I like to take brass animals and have them peeking around other decorative pieces? Whimsy is the unexpected items that make you smile. Birds and unicorns are easy choices. But you can choose anything. A playful child’s toy on display, a smiling moon mixed in with your wall decor, choose something you enjoy and that will make you and others smile when they see it.

hand decorated gypsy bohemian containers

OOAK pieces: Spice up a vignette and make your decor unique. One of a kind pieces include things you make yourself, pieces you find at a thrift store, local artists’ work, and inherited pieces. Shopping at big box stores makes keeping up with trends easy and they help build a big picture for a space, but make it your own by mixing in those one of a kind pieces.

If you enjoy these kinds of things as well, make sure you’re following me on Instagram: @adesignerathome. I just hosted a giveaway including all of these things and will be hosting a bigger one at 50k followers!
