Crushing On: Arched Doorways

August 29, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Having an architectural interesting home is lucky. Most of us want one. I surely want one. But architectural detail means something different depending on what style of home you’re after. If you’ve been here since the very beginning, you may remember my dream house. It’s a Spanish revival and I swoon hard for the way the builders renovated it.

To recap some, the things that stood out most to me were the unique tile work, unique window shapes, pops of color and archways.

exterior
It starts with the fabulous exterior featuring an archway.
living space
That has to be the most uniquely shaped passage way!
bath
Even the bathroom has an arch- swoon!

My home is a very basic 1950’s brick ranch.  It does not have any kind of architectural detail. But all hope is not lost on a blank canvas. If you’re like me, we can crush on things we want for our home and then find a creative way to change our home to fit our vision. The first step is finding spaces that have what we want so that we can start to see those things in our home. We may not have the same lay out or features, but I’d bet there’s a creative place you could put an arch in your home.

Are you feeling inspired yet? Naturally I am!

The thing is, archways aren’t especially difficult to add. And they can in fact be a great way to disguise unwanted beams. Here’s a few examples of how I could bring in an archway and maybe you can see how they’d fit in your home, too.

Option #1

boho eclectic living room gallery wall

In between the kitchen and living room is a wall with a doorway. Not ideal, yeah? But it’s a major load bearing wall in the house. The only load bearing wall on that whole side of the house. With modern building innovations, it’s not out of the realm of possible to have it open and seamless without a beam. But the fact remains, this neighborhood isn’t shooting up in value any time soon. It makes much more sense to go the cheaper route than the more expensive route to open up the space. Instead of doing a basic beam and rectangular cut out, adding in an arch conceals the necessary beam and adds character. Budget and Style win!

Option #2

living room boho hallway fur covered chair and fireplace

We’ve got a long hallway that extends off the living room that leads to 3 closets, 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. It’s just a basic opening leading into the long space. The perfect spot to add an archway. There are kits for do-it-yourselfers and they make it seem quite easy! They simply arch the squared off corners of any opening.

Option #3

global bohemian bathroom decorated

Using the same kit, and the advice of a professional, you could apply this same principal in the bathroom. Over the bathtub similar to the one in my dream home, you can add simple arches to cozy up bath time and add a bit of character on a budget.

There’s something special about little details like this that make a home feel cozier, layered and, as the name goes, interesting. Do you prefer the more seamless look of modern lines or do you gravitate towards curves and details? What’s your favorite architectural detail in a home?

Millennial Pink Prints

August 25, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

millennial-pink-free-art-prints

Have you heard about it? Millennial pink? Apparently it’s all the rage right now. And thankfully the effect of being the last person to hear about and look into a trend means that all the gorgeous inspo is already laid out in front of me.

But, isn’t millennial pink just last year’s Pantone’s rose quartz? That’s what I thought when I started seeing inspiration amongst the internet, but it looks like millennial pink means something different to a lot of people. Maybe rose quartz with a touch of peach?

Who knows exactly what this color is supposed to be. What I do know is that the colors I’ve seen labelled as millennial pink are quite beautiful and fit right in with the kilim and rose gold craze. So let’s dive into some free to download and print art to bring that color into your interiors.

Hopefully there’s enough variation in pinky colors there so that everyone can get there hand on a little millennial pink art. Click the photo you like, save it to your computer, print from home or send to a printing service, frame and hang! Instant trendy style on a budget 😉

How To: Add Color Without Paint

August 21, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Colorful Interiors: The "No Paint" Method perfect for indecisive decorators, renters and everyone beyond and in between | ADesignerAtHome

There are a lot of aesthetics that use color to bring out the desired vibe in a space. But for renters and those who find it difficult to commit to decor, paint isn’t really the best of options to consider when wanting to add color to a space. Whether you want to add a small splash, a monochromatic scheme to include color or you want full blown color-palooza, these tips will get you there without the dedication paint necessitates. From experience, here are the ways I like to bring color into my home:

The “No Paint” Method To Colorful Interiors

Textiles

Try It: Drape a tapestry over a sofa, bring in curtains in a bright color, cover a chair with a pretty blanket, lay a runner or table cloth on a piece of furniture, and bring together seating areas with area rugs.

Curtains

Pillows

Throw Blankets

Tapestries

Tablecloths & Runners

Area Rugs

Plants

Try It: Seek out a plant with unique colors or blooms, put a plant in a colorful planter, stick a planter on a painted plant stand (or stool-like object), or stick the planter in a macrame plant hanger made with colored cord.

Plants

Planters

Plant Stands

Plant Hangers

Processed with VSCO with preset

Art

Try It: Pick up frames in funky fresh hues, switch out the mat for a patterned or colored one, choose art made with colors you want in the space, hang colorful woven baskets or painted mirrors.

Mats

Art

Baskets

Mirrors

Vignettes

Try It: Incorporate color into a space by pulling together vignettes with lanterns, candles, books, sculptures and/or vases that are colored.

Lanterns

Candles

Books

Sculptures

Vases

When you pull in elements from each of these different areas, you build the basis for a colorful home. Some quick tips for keeping things cohesive would be to choose colors with similar tones (brights, moody, jewel toned, grey toned, etc.) and to build over time. And remember, what matters most is that you love your space!

Back To Blogging

August 18, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

I’m alive! You guys. I don’t think there’s any true way to explain the joy I feel sitting here blogging from an actual working computer. I have been so intermittent and outright MIA most of this past year. Before the holidays, my laptop took a fall that destroyed the entire screen. We simply didn’t have the funds to buy another laptop, not even an inexpensive refurbished one.

So for a while I blogged from my phone. That was frustrating. And then my parents let me borrow back a 19 inch TV I’d given to them a while back to HDMI connect to my busted laptop. But the laptop was running very slow and the battery was fried so it had to be plugged in constantly and the charging port was busted. It was a terrifying set up. One wrong bump and everything was lost.

But I’m finally back up and running! We had a bit of spare cash and needed to upgrade our current set up for our son’s school. He’s now officially a 5 year old and Virginia requires he be registered in some kind of school situation. With my health the way it is, I wasn’t confident I could keep up with plans and lessons for home school. And Husband wasn’t on board for unschooling.

But I know he’s not ready for a 6 hour day in a classroom with strangers. Yes, I know a lot of kids adapt and figure it out, but I’m not willing to force that kind of anxiety on my particular kid. So I took a chance and checked out k12.com and found that we were eligible for online school. So that was the push that justified spending the extra money. The side benefit is blogging again!

buy-laptop-available-on-amazon

Other things that are going on: I’m finally going full swing on redesigning the bedroom, I’m making updates to the dining room and I’ve instituted Fetty Wap Fridays on my Instagram. Also on the Instagram, in June I had my first successful photo a day monthly challenge and the next one is coming up in September and there will be 30 cohosts! One for each day so that’s bound to be extra fun. Oh, yes, my Instagram handle changed to @thebohoabode. Some projects that got left behind were photographing the bathroom, sharing the updated sun porch, and the hallway makeover that I started. I hope to be back on track sharing all of those things, like, now.

Mixed Textiles: Get the boho look without paint by using a mix of layered textiles

Besides that, we’ve been spending tons of time at various different local parks, watching kids shows, doing laundry and dishes and living regular ol’ life. Oh, we now have a pet toad. Best pet ever, I swear. Simple habitat, we forage for bugs in the yard and he gets fresh air every day in our own yard.

Alright my friends, I’m going to sign out on this one. If you’re still around after all this time, I’m so glad! I hope we can stay better connected from here on out. I’ll leave you with this free download/printable courtesy of Pixabay. Simply click the photo and it will open up a page you can then right click and save the photo on. It’s so end of summer meets early autumn, wouldn’t you say?

African Mudcloth Pencil Pouch Tutorial

August 7, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Helloooo August and Eeeek it’s almost time for school!

One thing you won’t have to worry about this back to school season is going in with chic global style back to school accessories. Because myself and the other gals behind The Global Styler are bringing you 4 different DIYs to bring that global style vibe to the mundane back to school experience.

Here on my blog I’m going to show you how to make this really easy African mudcloth pencil pouch- it’s no see!

African mudcloth Pencil Pouch Tutorial- no sew DIY

You don’t need to use vintage or even authentic fabric for this one, it’s just what I’ve had on hand. In fact, if mudcloth ain’t your thing, use the video as inspiration and use whatever fabric strikes your fancy.

I’m not sure if a pencil pouch is necessary nowadays. Do kids even cart around markers, pencils, pens, erasers, calculators and the like? I graduated in 2008 and my son is doing school foe the first time this year.

If nothing else, this would make a cute makeup pouch for inside my purse ?.

Here’s the video sharing how I made it. I do talk through it but you could watch on mute too and get the gist of it.

Grab Your Supplies:

Fabric

Hot glue & sticks

Zipper

Scissors

Watch The Video:

And then fill it with whatever goodies you’ve got to store!

Starting LDN and everything else I’ve tried for CFS so far…

I’ve been taking low dose naltrexone (ldn) for just over a month at this point and I wanted to share an update on how it’s been going thus far. I started taking ldn because I tried everything else in an attempt to feel better. At my last PCP appointment, I told him I’d be trying […]

Checkerboard: The Latest Insta-Trend

You ever first see a trend and think, “nope, not for me.” That was, and still a little, me with the checkerboard trend. I’ve never liked checkerboard walls or floors. At least not enough to semi-permanently put it somewhere in my home. But I am still in pursuit of an interior design certificate and job […]

My best Amazon Prime Purchases Ever

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that it’s time for Amazon’s annual Prime day. And you likely don’t need me to tell you about my best Amazon Prime purchases ever. But I’m telling you, these are such good products and I got them for a steal too!

Celebrating Pride Month With LGBT Businesses

Part of mindful consumerism, for me at least, is intentionally seeking out companies founded and owned by marginalized communities. Heritage and pride months are the perfect reminder to seek out alternative sources for goods and services. Join me in celebrating pride month with LGBT businesses below.

AAPI Skincare & Beauty Haul & Demo (dry skin, fragrance sensitive)

As my mental health has improved, I’ve enjoyed getting back into my mindfulness consumerism series. With AAPI month upon us, and quickly coming to an end, I took stock of what I needed to purchase and set out to buy replacements from AAPI skincare and beauty brands. I needed face wash, serum, and oil. For […]

Simple Minty Eye Makeup Look (Indigenous Beauty Brands)

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]

Full Face Latinx Brands

From September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. During this time I wanted to put together a full face of Hispanic owned beauty brands.
