DIY Handira, Evil Eye and Felt Tassel Ornaments

December 4, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hello and welcome to the kick off of Christmas week here at A Designer At Home! Today I have a 3 in 1 Christmas ornament tutorial that’s all about bringing in global style for the holidays. The tutorials start easy, then go to medium difficulty, and then a level hard DIY. I was inspired by handira blankets for the easy ornament. I wanted to recreate an evil eye talisman for the medium skill ornament. And the hardest of them is inspired by Mexican Felt ornaments.

3-global-style-ornament-DIYs-tutorials-for-easy-medium-hard-skills

So hopefully the variety gives you something in a skill level you’re comfortable with. And a style that compliments your holiday aesthetic.

This post is the December installment of the Global Styler series which means Stephanie from Casa Watkins Living and Kathy from Up To Date Interiors are also sharing global style ornaments today. Stick around until the end to catch the links for their projects.

Once everything is dry, they’re ready to hang. You can go the traditional route and hang them on a Christmas tree orrrrr….

Handira wedding blanket inspired DIY ornament tutorial with video!

You can hang them on a guava tree! Mine will most likely end up on the Christmas tree, but I’m dragging my feet getting the tree put together. This is totally working for me right now though

Mexican Felt DIY ornament tutorial with video!

What do you think? Could you see yourself making any of these? I think they could make for a really fun activity in between baking cookies, wrapping presents or just winding down at the end of the day with some hot chocolate (or wine works, too).

Budget Botanical Gift Wrap Idea

Holiday Gift Wrapping Idea With Dollar Store Supplies- botanical inspired

One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is gift wrapping. I love finding unique ways to use materials and really going all out with my choices in gift wrap, bows, ribbon, etc. The past few years, I haven’t been very inspired, but this year inspiration struck. With a quick trip to the dollar store, I had everything I needed for these botanical foliage gift wrap ideas.

This post is a collaboration with 6 other bloggers who are using items from the dollar store to create holiday gifts and decor. Visit their projects at the end of this post.

  • Tropical foliage floral pick
  • White gift wrap

  • Gift boxes
  • Hot glue

I created a video tutorial to show how I created three different designs. Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to play around with ideas and come up with more, too.

I made them so it’s easy for me to be pretty jazzed about them. But, I really like how they turned out! The poinsettia is the only part that is holiday themed so it can be adapted for a variety of different gift giving situations, too.

Dollar Store Budget Friendly Botanical Gift Wrapping Idea

I know finding things in one dollar store at another can be difficult sometimes. The floral section seems to be pretty consistent, but if you are having trouble finding these exact items I have a few alternative material ideas-

  • Jute twine from hardware section
  • Burlap from floral section
  • White ribbon from gift wrap and floral section
  • Glitter ribbon from the holiday section
  • Green paper covered floral wire
  • Craft paper from the mailing section
  • Other colors in the plain gift wrap
  • White gift boxes from the holiday section

Where To Buy Fair Trade Home Decor

November 29, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Every time I start to think about shopping for something, I always start looking at the main shopping sites and I always look for the best deal. But what is the sacrifice of buying something at the lowest cost possible? I’m already quite aware of the existence of slave labor and how companies do whatever possible to maximize their profit (even at the expense of the quality of life of actual human beings). I realize that just because something is handmade, doesn’t make it socially responsible. And I realize that especially now with much of our shopping done through a computer screen, we are even more disconnected with where our products come from. So, I wanted to put together a Fair Trade Shopping Guide for myself and you.

My fair trade shopping guide includes a variety of shops that include homewares, clothing, travel gear, etc. But, I wanted to hone in on home goods specifically because this seems to be an area where people are most in the dark. We eat our cruelty free snacks while wearing our pact apparel all while shopping for goods that promote the use of slave labor (or labor quite comprable). Just because a shop is paying their employees, doesn’t mean they’re paying them fairly/ giving them fair work hours/ being conscious of the effects of their facilities on these people’s land/ giving them a clean and safe environment to work in.

I have a lot of fun decorating my home. I really love looking at pretty interiors. I don’t think I’d be living a content, fulfilled life if I got rid of all my decor. But I do realize the effects of my actions. I know my heart wants to do the right thing, but my brain wants the best deal. I’ve tried to strike a balance. And I hope you try to work in some fair trade goods in your purchases, too.

If you have an appreciation for global goods, this is the culturally appreciative way of enjoying them.

Viva Terra – Fair trade, Handmade, Recycled, All Natural Made In USA, Responsibly Sourced Wood

Viva Terra values human and environmental well being (read more about their values in their own words here). Their main focus is green living, but they recognize that part of green living is fair trade so it’s engraved in their mission. With practices like sourcing recycled and reclaimed materials to shorten their carbon footprint and promoting local artisans for their reduced transportation requirements, Viva Terra shows that fair trade truly is a global good.

What can you shop at Viva Terra?

Home Accents– vases, clocks, shelves, pillows, rugs, tabletop decor, wall decor, candles, frames, statues, lighting, tables, trays, poufs, baskets, storage… if you haven’t gathered, they have a very extensive catalog of accents for the home.

Holiday Accents– candle holders, ornaments, twinkle lights, pillows, table runners, garland, vases, stockings, tabletop decor.. Essentially everything you’d need minus the tree.

Wreaths– seasonal and year round wreaths, flower bulb delivery (one-time and monthly)

Lighting– pendants, tabletop, hard-wired, plug-in, twinkle lights, himalayan salt lamps, lanterns, floor lamps, nightlights, candle holders,

Zen Style– candle holders, statues, poufs, tables, chairs, wall art, dinnerware, towels, bells, decor, pillows, wind chime, beds, fire pit

Gifts– sub sections are Blooming Gifts, Artisan Crafted Gifts, Eco Friendly Gifts, Zen Gifts, Gift Baskets

Bed & Bath– Shower curtains, bath decor, organization, bedding, pillows and throws, towels, beds, tables & chairs, dressers & storage, decorative accents

Furniture– sofas, chairs, dining chairs and tables, console tables, chests, coffee tables, accent tables, beds, shelving, bookcases, dressers, nightstands, desks

Patio– Rugs, statues, planters, decor

As you can see, Viva Terra is massive and well established with goods for every inch of the home. You could very well buy exclusively at Viva Terra should you want to and if you like the selection for the need you have.

Mayamiko – Fair Trade, Sustainable Practices, Community Building Initiatives

Mostly a fashion boutique, Mayamiko has a smaller home goods selection but they’re not without an awesome story. That story includes providing nutritious meals, education, women’s sanitary supplies, regularly fairly paid and scheduled work, training and the list goes on and on. They are their own supplier, so the website you shop at is the brand you’ll receive. Read more about Mayamiko’ principals here.

What can you shop at Mayamiko?

Home & Gifts– soaps, tassels, totes, pillows

Global Goods Partners – Fair Trade, Non-Profit, Women Empowering, Handcrafted

This is kind of a jack of all trades site where you can get fashion, toys, gifts and home goods. They’re a non profit which is especially exciting to see. Their focus is on empowering women especially since they’re disproportionaly disadvantaged especially when looking at countries without strict systems in place. Global Goods Partners is the platform, voice and policing agency (they ensure the workers are treated fairly as there is no universal accreditation for Fair Trade home goods) for these artisans, social enterprises and community-based organizations.

What can you shop at Global Goods Partners?

Home– baskets, bowls, trays, canisters, felt flowers and plants, vases, hooks, candles, storage

Office– trays, journals

Kitchen/Dining– cups, trays, utensil holder, coasters

Ornaments

Gifts– bags, journals, candles, jewelry, scarves, baskets

Novica – Fair Trade, World Wide Reach, Artisan Made with local materials

This is a huge resource for buying fair trade goods. With an investor like National Geographic and many others, they are able to have artisans in countries all over the world and provide them with 0% interest loans to obtain the materials needed to create their goods. Each item shares the story of the artisan behind the good. There are fashion and jewelry sections on the website, which is nice to see, but there’s an extensive gift and home decor section, too. They are established and have been for many years. You can even shop Novica goods on Amazon.

What can you shop at Novica?

Sculptures – wood, ceramic, cultural, recycled metal, romantic and abstract

Fair Trade Winds – Fair Trade, Empowering Women, Eco-Friendly, Anti Sex Trafficking Measures

What started as selling fair trade chocolates and coffee through their church, it stemmed into a comprehensive selection of fair trade goods including fashion, jewelry and home. They work with artisan wholesalers to bring a selection of fairly traded artisan made goods. They have symbols on the goods which represent women empowerment, traditional craft, use of sustainable materials, fights human trafficking, and children protection. They also have a really good guide to deciphering fair trade labels that I suggest you read. They also have food on their site, too!

What can you shop at Fair Trade Winds?

Small Business Holiday Shopping Guide

November 25, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

As we are rushing to get the best possible gifts for our loved ones, I wanted to bring a little attention to shopping small businesses. Small businesses are makers and hunters, finding and creating the best goods for us and our homes. I have set out to share the most diverse selection of shops I could find with an array of products that will hopefully peak your interest. There are an array of great gifts and I’ll do my best to do the shop’s selection justice but definitely still visit them all to see all of the offerings. They are also all on Instagram so I’ll link to their feeds so you can see all the inspo, too.

I believe a little bit of the spirit of a maker goes into their creations, making it a more meaningful gift with good energy. You can share the story of the person behind the piece, too. Oftentimes you’ll find that small shop owners source better materials and have broader options for customization than something you’ll find on a shelf without a face. These are my favorites, let’s dive into this good energy…

She doesn’t currently have a shop set up but you can view what she has for sale on her Instagram and she takes custom orders. She creates unique wall hangings with rope and yarn material. And if you’re in California, she runs a macrame class, too.

Peace Guru Candle Co

You can find reed diffusers and soy candles on the Peace Guru Candle Co website. You’ll also find an about us page where they explain that their candles are hand poured in San Diego, CA with non-GMO soy wax into containers with all cotton, no chemicals, wicks and the scents are created with essential oils. The labels themselves are created from hand drawn, hand painted designs. They’re vegan, which I can totally support, cruelty free, biodegradeable, non-GMO, palm-wax/beeswax/petroleum/parrafin free. Candles are a huge gift idea and you can’t go wrong with supporting a small USA based shop doing things the best way possible.

My shibori loving heart was excited when I came across this shop. Beckee is the owner and she hand dyes her creations and even infuses a little magic with water infused with crystals or charged by a full moon. She also sells finds from her travels which means you can have a little of her spirit as well as the spirit of the world. You can attend a class if you’re interested in learning technique (I know I am, whyyyy must I be an east coast gal?) through her website, or you can shop her creations and finds through her Etsy.

The unique art of blending merino wood with macrame is original to Jess and her shop. She’s always dreaming up different designs and color combinations so it pays to keep up with her Instagram. She also announces when she’s doing something a little different, like ornaments. The main attraction is her layered wall hangings. Oftentimes a colored wood background with a smaller macrame design laying over top.

A shop that is located in my own neck of the woods- how cool is that? Hand crafted wood designs make wall art, tables, coasters, headboards and trays by this husband and wife duo. Their selection is always evolving so sometimes you’ll find colors inspired by the ocean, other times you’ll find white and wood tones and other times you’ll find funky bright colors. But they welcome custom work so you can always get exactly what you need. Check out their Instagram for examples of their past work, visit their Etsy to buy online, or stop by the Selden Market in downtown Norfolk, VA to shop in person.

Recycled and organic cotton yarns are knitted to create throws in an eco-friendly way. Using recycled T-shirt clippings to weave into a yarn prevents those shirt clippings from ending up in a landfill. The indoor/outdoor lines recycles polyester, that’s about 78 plastic bottles going into each throw. With cool practices like these, it’s a mission worth supporting to encourage green and local businesses.

They’re in on trend designs like feathers and cacti and I don’t think any one would expect to receive one as a gift, but I know they’d quickly fall in love.

Lamps Plus Holiday Gift Guide Sweepstakes

November 15, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hello my beautiful boho babes! Today I’m popping in with a relatively quick blog post to share with you the Lamps Plus holiday gift guide sweepstakes. I was invited to select my favorite gift items from their site to share with you and you now have the chance to win one. But before we get into all the details on the giveaway, let me just say that Lamps Plus is so much more than just lighting. Before you roll your eyes and say you don’t need another lamp or you rent or any other don’t-need-lighting excuse, hang tight because you’ll be surprised by all they have to offer.

If you haven’t been by there site, there’s an array of categories from furniture to pillows to art to outdoor. Have I ever told you that the first light I ever bought for my house was bought from Lamps Plus? I just went online, searched for ceiling lights, they came up and I have been a customer ever since and now a partner.

Those awesome fabric mid century style chairs I have in my dining room are from Lamps Plus, as is the lighting in my bathroom and the lights I had above my fireplace that are going into my son’s big boy room (that’s coming soon!).

All that to say, if you like anything about my style- there’s a chance for free merchandise from them right now! And even better, you’ll be able to cross off a gift for someone on your list because the prize isn’t just for you, it’s for you and a friend! Let’s get into the details.

I love receiving things for my home for the holidays (and my birthday and mothers day and randomly ;)) and I feel like there’s something for everyone in every phase of their home journey.

BohoAbode-1

Here are the items I chose for my gift guide and your options to choose from to win:

BohoAbode-2 BohoAbode-3 BohoAbode-4 BohoAbode-5 BohoAbode-6

1. Sculpted Accent Table Lamp – Why I chose this? Because it’s neutral but still interesting. It’ll fit in with a variety of styles from farmhouse to coastal to boho. Who would I gift it to? Mom, dad for his office, girlfriend, any relative that’s putting together their place.

2.  Indigo Lumbar Pillow –  Why I chose this? Because it’s got enough color and detail to be an accent piece without being too overwhelmingly personal in it’s style. Who would I gift it to? Siblings working on creating their own spaces, friends with farmhouse, coastal or boho types of styles, and myself.

3. Modern Seagrass Baskets –  Why I chose this? Because baskets are a functional gift. You can use them to put another gift into or you can gift them alone. Who would I gift it to? Anyone! Friends, family, neighbors, pretty much anyone on the list can be crossed off with a basket gift.

4. Glass Teapot Set –  Why I chose this? Because tea, coffee and food always make a great gift. This is a unique spin on that category of gifting in that it’s different from the things you normally see marketed this time of year. Who would I gift it to? Any friends who drink tea, my mom would especially love this, and no shame- myself.

5. Aquamarine Ceramic Planters – Why I chose this? Because I love plants. I love gifting plants and receiving plants and having plants. A big expense when having houseplants is nice planters. Who would I gift it to? Anyone with great taste and a love for plants. I have a girlfriend who has been working hard to bring a boho eclectic vibe to her space and one of these might be making it to her during the holidays 😉

Autumn Bar Cart: Kilim Pumpkin Autumn Art Print

November 10, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hello there my beautiful boho babes! The end of summer is gone, Halloween is gone, are we diving into Christmas decor? If you’re wanting to take a bit longer to enjoy the autumnal vibes, I’ve created a collection of kilim pumpkin printables with matching typography. These are an awesome boho vintage vibe to them and the kilim colors are perfect for an assortment of styles. Here’s how I used mine to style my Autumn Bart Cart:

Anxious to get your prints?

The transition from my Halloween bar cart to autumnal bar cart is simple and keeps Thanksgiving in mind. I kept out a few pumpkins but have mostly dedicated the cart to holding libations for guests. My cacti glasses are on top the radio and I’ve added a bottle of wine with my DIY felt and tassel wine bottle charms (perfect for a hostess gift!).

And candy, of course, because you never want people getting grumpy while waiting on food to be served. This window gets a ton of late day son so the plants are always at home here and don’t get moved, even for the holidays.

It’ll be easy to once again transition to Christmas decor by swapping out the pumpkins, gourd and art. This time of year moves so fast that I don’t like to do excessive decorating for each holiday. There’s just a little too much to be getting done to also set aside time to completely redecorate a mantel, bar cart and front door but I think these few items pack enough of a punch to feel festive.

If you want to get your hands on a pumpkin kilim printable, they’re available free for newsletter subscribers or, for just a dollar, you can buy them in my shop.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I don’t have any Christmas decor out yet, because I totally do. I’m just taking my time pulling all the things out so I don’t burn out. So far I’ve been stocking up on different sized gift bags because I already don’t feel like wrapping anything. And bottle brush trees from the Target dollar spot and light up metallic trees from the dollar store because those are pretty amazing for mantel decorating.

I’m not sure yet what the plan is for Thanksgiving. Normally I just go to whatever family members house I’m expected at. But I’m vegan and even the corn and greenbeans get embellished and/or cooked in animal product. I’d rather just sleep that whole day away, but we will see. I hope you enjoy this look at my simple boho autumn bar cart and that you take a moment to get the art print. Be well!

Starting LDN and everything else I’ve tried for CFS so far…

I’ve been taking low dose naltrexone (ldn) for just over a month at this point and I wanted to share an update on how it’s been going thus far. I started taking ldn because I tried everything else in an attempt to feel better. At my last PCP appointment, I told him I’d be trying […]

Checkerboard: The Latest Insta-Trend

You ever first see a trend and think, “nope, not for me.” That was, and still a little, me with the checkerboard trend. I’ve never liked checkerboard walls or floors. At least not enough to semi-permanently put it somewhere in my home. But I am still in pursuit of an interior design certificate and job […]

My best Amazon Prime Purchases Ever

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that it’s time for Amazon’s annual Prime day. And you likely don’t need me to tell you about my best Amazon Prime purchases ever. But I’m telling you, these are such good products and I got them for a steal too!

Celebrating Pride Month With LGBT Businesses

Part of mindful consumerism, for me at least, is intentionally seeking out companies founded and owned by marginalized communities. Heritage and pride months are the perfect reminder to seek out alternative sources for goods and services. Join me in celebrating pride month with LGBT businesses below.

AAPI Skincare & Beauty Haul & Demo (dry skin, fragrance sensitive)

As my mental health has improved, I’ve enjoyed getting back into my mindfulness consumerism series. With AAPI month upon us, and quickly coming to an end, I took stock of what I needed to purchase and set out to buy replacements from AAPI skincare and beauty brands. I needed face wash, serum, and oil. For […]

Simple Minty Eye Makeup Look (Indigenous Beauty Brands)

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]

Indigenous Owned Shopping Faves

You’re shopping. Here’s everything you need to be shopping for from indigenous owned brands. From beauty to fashion to accessories and body care, these products are top tier. These may be my indigenous owned shopping faves, but they’re quality from design to ingredients to workmanship.

Full Face Latinx Brands

From September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. During this time I wanted to put together a full face of Hispanic owned beauty brands. Some of these brands are well known and others are smaller brands. I tried to find a balance of big name beauty brands and up and coming. After testing […]

Here’s My Faves for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is upon us! It’s always my goal to be mindful of where I’m spending my money. During Heritage and Pride months, I try to make an effort to seek out brands that I may not otherwise be aware of. It’s no surprise, what’s out there is truly amazing. And I want to […]
