How I Made It: Leather Sling Hanging Planter

September 16, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

diy-earthy-diy-leather-planter-sling

Hey guys!

Are you ready for another DIY from my bedroom? One necessity for me was plants. Lots of plants. It really uplifts my mood and makes me feel at ease to be around plants. I didn’t want to do anything as permanent as put in shelves (because lord knows I’ll only need to move them a month later) but I also didn’t want to crowd the existing surfaces with plants. So to keep the floor as clear as possible, I created this Leather (pleather) Hanging Planter Sling.

earthy diy leather planter sling

It’s really easy to make and you can totally do this so let’s dive into the tutorial!

(Bonus- You’re going to love the way this Leather Hanging Planter looks!)

Supplies:

Embroidery Floss and Needle

Two square pieces of pleather (leather will damage if any water sits on it, so be sure to go faux)

Cotton Rope

Scissors/Straight Edge/Craft Knife

How To Make It:

Cut out two squares from your pleather fabric.

cut out two pieces of pleather fabric into equal squares

Sew A Knot Through Each Corner.

sew a knot through each corner of the two pieces of pleather, backs facing one another

(backsides facing one another)

Stitch All Four Sides Together.

stitch around all four edges

Cut A Slit Just Large Enough To Pass The Rope Through and Stitch Around The Edges.

cut a slit just barely large enough to pass the rope through

Pass Rope Through The Slit and Tie Off A Knot.

stitch the edges of slit and tie knot to end of rope

Cut Off A Shorter Length Of Rope and Tie The Two Overlapping Pieces Together.

Tying a shorter length of rope over the longer 2 lengths of rope for extra balance and stability

Place An Adorable Plant Friend Onto The Center Of The Sling and Display!

This corner of my bedroom is totally giving me life right now. It always makes me smile! And yeah, I ended up changing out the plant. I LOVE the pothos. I have a hard time remembering to open the blinds in the morning and this resilient vine cuts me some slack.

How I Made It: Moroccan Wedding Blanket Inspired Wall Hanging

September 9, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey Guys!

One of my favorite things to create are wall hangings. With so many variations of wall hangings to choose from, I find myself making more and more because I just have to have them all. This time around I wanted to try making a wall hanging on a circle form and I wanted to achieve a look similar to moroccan wedding blankets. With a few different, yet inexpensive, materials, I’m happy to report that it’s both beautiful and very easy to put together.

Want to learn how to make one? You’re in the right place 🙂

Supplies:

Fluffy White Yarn
White Yarn with Silver thread
Textural Yarn
Sequin Ribbon

A lot of macrame wall hangings use straight objects to hang the strings/yarn/rope from. You’ve probably seen circular bases beginning to pop up as well as used in vintage pieces. Through a series of events totally unrelated to purchasing a ring for this wall hanging, I’m using the 16″bottom lamp ring from LampShop.com. Nope, not sponsored. But I can vouch that the customer service is on point and the pricing is incredible.

I spray painted the ring with a little gold spray paint and let it dry for a few days. Using the Lark’s head knot, I attached the strings to the ring. I didn’t measure the yarn out, but rather hung the wall hanging at the height I would be hanging it in my bedroom.

The process isn’t complicated, just tie the yarn onto the ring (or rod if you prefer) using the larks head knot (check out the break down of this and 4 other essential knots here). So I put together a short video that hopefully explains it well enough.

The texture and likeness of the wall hanging is so true to the textures you’d see in true moroccan wedding blankets. Not sure? Check out this post (on my old blog) where I share all things Moroccan wedding blanket obsessed 😉

Share It With Others and Have It For Later!

That’s it for today my friends! What have you been up to around your homes? I’m itching to get working on my my dining room but we are actually getting rolling on a bathroom renovation first. Don’t miss a single post in that adventure by signing up for my email newsletter!

How I Made It: Mid Century Inspired IKEA Tarva Bed Hack

September 7, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Mid Century Inspired IKEA Tarva Bed Headboard Hack

Hey Guys!

Today I’m here with the Ikea Tarva Bed headboard hack from my boho bedroom. A solid wood bed frame gets expensive. Luckily, IKEA has the solid pine Tarva bed. I find the design a little blah, though. I wanted something reminiscent of mid century design (and unfortunately those never turn up in the right size on Craigslist for me).

If you’re a fan of midcentury furniture, you’ll probably have come across many slatted benches and coffee tables. I like the airiness of them. And better yet, the slatted design allows for air flow. Super important to factor in when your bed is situated over the only vent in the room. Several things to consider later and I came to the conclusion that an IKEA Tarva Bed Hack was a must.

If you like this bed I created and don’t like complicated DIYs, this is a match made in heaven!

Mid Century Inspired IKEA Tarva Bed Headboard Hack

Here’s What I Used:

IKEA Tarva Bed in the Queen size

Wood Glue

Minwax stain in special walnut

Minwax Polyurethane

2 Paint Brushes

A power drill with phillips head bit and screws

1 x 2 Pine lumber (choose a quality you’re comfortable with, but note that the frame is pine. so if you want it to match, you should go with pine in a 1 x 2 size)

How I Made It: Mid Century Inspired IKEA Tarva Bed Hack

Follow the assembly directions for just the headboard, omitting this part:

skip this step

Cut the 1 x 2s down to 64 inches. This will leave a bit of overhang on either side of the headboard frame.

Stain and Seal all of the included parts minus the slats in the headboard and the 1 x 2’s. We won’t be using those slats and will be using our own for a more mid century look.

Mid Century Inspired IKEA Tarva Bed Headboard Hack

Lie the headboard face up on a flat surface and wood glue the 1 x 2s onto the face of the headboard. Start from the top, and use the excess pieces of 1×2 as markers between the slats.

My lumber got rained on in transit so it warped a bit. I find it okay, not really noticeable, and adds that “real life” touch to a true DIY. So be easy on yourself if things don’t turn out perfect.

Mid Century Inspired IKEA Tarva Bed Headboard Hack

Once the glue dries, flip the headboard over and drill into the back of each slat through the frame of the headboard to ensure they stay in place. Mid Century Inspired IKEA Tarva Bed Headboard Hack

Then finish assembling the bed according to the directions.

It’s super easy, but still custom enough not to scream, “Hey! Look at me! I’m an IKEA bed!” Not that there’s anything wrong with IKEA beds, they just don’t always fit into a vintage-y/boho-ey space.

And here’s how the bed turned out:

PS, I’m certain this could be done with the FJELLSE, just note it only comes in a Full/Double, and that’s just a tad tight for my hubby and I (hence the “wrong size” authentic mid century beds I find on Craigslist).

PSS, give this post a share for me, please? I love to share my creations with friends of those who come here!

I really appreciate you being here. <3

How I Made It: Boho Braided Hanging Vases

September 2, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

do it yourself bohemian hanging vasesboho handfuls of wild flowers in diiy hanging vases

Hey Guys!

It’s important for me to have plants in my home, but I also think it’s really great for everyone to explore different options in adding greenery to their own home. I’d like to share one of my favorite options with you today for hanging small clippings of flowers or clippings from your other plants to propagate or just to display. Hanging planters are my favorite and this one today is a small vase and can be used with water or soil.

What You’ll Need:

geometric vase, jute twine, gold beads (or any color that fits the twine), hot glue gun, optional: Stones/rocks/crystals

Boho Macrame Hanging Vases with Braided quartz tail

How I Made It: Boho Braided Hanging Vases

I found a fair of the Nate Berkus cream colored geometric vases on a Target clearance end cap a while back. When one finds cute vases for less than $3, one must pick up those vases. If you aren’t lucky enough to stumble onto Nate Berkus vases, no worries, there are loads of ways of getting an interesting look like bigger/funner beads or paint/vinyl treatments to a basic vase. So get creative and work with what you have or what you can find. Give them a good wipe down and pull off any visible stickers.

Boho Macrame Hanging Vases with Braided quartz tail
Next we’ll need to cut lengths of twine. I used lengths about as long as tip of right hand fingers to left shoulder. I could dig out a tape measure to figure that out but it could take a few hours for me to find it, so I’ll carry on with that vague measurement. Cut 4 equal lengths and eyeball about where you’ll want the bottom of the vase to rest, taking into account that with any braiding, crossing over, and knots you’ll lose a few inches of top length. Go ahead an tie an overhand knot for the base.

Boho Macrame Hanging Vases with Braided quartz tail

Now, this step is basically the cheaters way to creating a fast hanging planter when working with a solid base like a vase. You can hot glue all the knots and beads so that when you go to pull/tighten for the next step, everything stays in place. Glue the knot to the center of the vase.
Then take two pieces of the twine to opposite sides of the vase and tie them into an overhand knot at the edge of the bottom and hot glue in place.

how to start the knots for a hanging vase

Then take one string from each knot and slide a bead onto them. Once taught, place a dollop of hot glue on the back of the bead and press onto the vase. Do the same with the other side. Keep separating the strings and sliding beads and hot gluing in place until you’ve reached near the top. I didn’t go all of the way up because I wanted a bit more space between the strings when it hung for the plants to peep through. Tie the top of the strings into an overhand knot.

Boho Macrame Hanging Vases with Braided quartz tail

You can leave the twine below the first knot free, or you can work a crystal into it. Simply tight a knot, spread the twine to go around either end of the stone, then tie another knot. Or you can work in square knots for some extra fun.

I hope you’ve found this “how to” to be helpful and inspiring. Leave a comment with any questions or feedback (I love comments!) and give this post a share (this helps me out a ton!). Have a wonderful day & enjoy creating 🙂

How I Made It: Rose Quartz Drawer Pulls

August 31, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

DIY Crystal Drawer Knobs (A Designer At Home tutorial)

Hey Guys!

These crystal drawer pulls are one of my all time favorite projects. I turned a basic IKEA Rast dresser into a West Elm Stria nightstand knock off but I wanted to add knobs to make the drawers easier to pull in and out (the Stria dresser has hidden pulls carved under each drawer, but I really wanted to make and use these so I skipped the carving out a handle part).

The knobs are a great way to add a bit of femininity to an otherwise “masculine” and “woody” dresser. I conjured up these rose quartz drawer pulls because they’re pretty and I love crystals. Rose quartz is touted for having love related benefits. So what better room to use them in than the bedroom, amiright? Let’s jump into how you can create your own:

crystal rose quartz drawer pulls knobs (a designer at home)

Supplies:

*Crystal Allies Materials: 1lb Bulk Rough Pink Rose Quartz Crystals
*E6000®
*Flat Cap Nuts
*1/4-20 x 1.18 Joint Connector Bolt
(make sure your connector bolts are long enough to go through the drawer and into the cap nut)
*Power Drill with *1/4 inch drill bit

How I Made It: Rose Quartz Drawer Pulls

Ensure the crystals are free of loose debris. Because we’re working with unfinished quartz, there can be a bit of dust and dirt. Once they are clean, dab a dollop of glue onto the cap nut and place the crystal onto the cap nut. Find a place to rest the quartz while the glue dries.

DIY Crystal Drawer Knobs (A Designer At Home tutorial)

I worked out odd spaces all over my work space to place them. You don’t want the glue to drip down into the cap nut otherwise it won’t screw onto the connector bolt, so make sure they are cap side up.

DIY Crystal Drawer Knobs (A Designer At Home tutorial)

Once the glue dries, it’s all about assembling. I had to drill holes into the face of my drawers, but if you’re simply replacing knobs, you’re set to put them in!

drill holes large enough for drawer pull hardware

it all started with a rast dresser from ikea to west elm stria nightstand knock off to diy rose quartz drawer pulls

And the result is an earthy, boho, feminine touch. It especially pairs well with wood grain but would look lovely on a painted piece, too! I hope you’ve found this little tutorial helpful and informative 🙂 See you next time!

Tour: Boho Vintage Eclectic Bedroom

August 24, 2015 by CORINNA HENDERSON

boho-bedroom-elephant-tapestry-houseplants-bohemian-patterns-painting-wall-hanging-a-designer-at-home

Hey Guys!

Today I’m happy to be sharing the second space I’ve designed in my home- the “Master” Bedroom. It’s a pretty tiny space, but I’ve managed to fit a dresser, two nightstands, a queen bed and plant life. I’ve used some vintage pieces and I’ve used store bought pieces that I’ve DIYed a little magic into. I get so happy when I see pictures of this space because it came together so well. And while there’s things I could change, I’m actually really happy and feel “complete” with this room.

I like to call the style of the space “Bohemian with order.” Because I lean both way with my personality, this design appeases both the type A and type B in me. I love fun patterns with a clean pallet. A moroccan wedding blanket wall hanging structured by a square painted frame (but still messy with it’s paint technique). Whimsical cacti tapered candles paired with refined vintage brass candleware. Crystal drawer knobs with clean copper frames. There’s a strict and intentional balance to keep the room feeling fresh and playful.

As I like to do with a “room reveal” kind of post, I’m going to keep chit chat to a minimum. I’ll have several week’s worth of tutorials, “crushing on” posts for elements within the room, source list, and tips. If you’d like to catch any of those posts, become an email subscriber. It’s the easiest way for me to ensure you receive notification of a new post when it’s posted. You can sign up here.
