Eclectic Bohemian Dining Room Plans Going Forward

January 10, 2017 by CORINNA HENDERSON

It’s New Year New Room Refresh Challenge time and I am so freaking excited. If you’ve been around for a minute or two here, you’ll know I’ve started and stopped my dining room project more than a couple of times. I finally, finally have a clear vision for the space and it’s happened perfectly in time for this challenge hosted by Casa Watkins Living. Envision a bohemian space with tropical and global elements woven throughout. The image in my head is perfect. And seeing it here in the design board has me giddy. Plants, pinks, wicker- what’s not to love?

As with any space in my home, I like to have a little nod to the home itself. It’s a 1950’s build brick ranch, so I’ve opted to bring in a couple of midcentury pieces. I like to balance the stiffness of mid century with the casual vibes wicker furniture has. On top of those two elements, I’m a summer loving, self proclaimed crazy plant lady. It was natural to let a bit of that slip into the space with the color scheme and fabulously tropical wallpaper. As always, my undying love for the mediterranean, middle east and south asian has an influence in the pieces I gravitate towards. Here’s the design board:

Colorful bohemian thanksgiving tablescape

November 7, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

This time of year sure does fly by quickly doesn’t it? We’ve already whipped past Halloween and now it’s time to gear up for Thanksgiving. It’s overwhelming and so exciting! I really enjoy taking dedicated time out to focus on thanks and giving.

Do you enjoy this time of year? I know a lot of people love Thanksgiving because they love the foods offered. Me? not so much. As a vegan, I find this holiday to be one of the more difficult ones. I never want my friends and family to go out of their way for me. But the decorating. Oh boy does the decorating get me excited! This is my first attempt at a full Thanksgiving tablescape.

A huge “Thank You!” goes out to Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Co. for inviting me to partake in this Thanksgiving tablescape themed Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours. You can always start on her blog to work your way through all the tours.

And since this is a round robin style tour, you’ve most likely stopped here from my incredibly talented friend Cassie Bustamante. I know, I know. She’s a tablescape genius. You really ought to also make sure you’ve checked out her Kid’s Thanksgiving Tablescape and all the work she’s done on her daughter’s bohemian bedroom.

So I guess we’ll jump into some pictures with occasional commentary then? Have a seat!

I like to keep it simple. Dishes from the dollar store, inexpensive punches of color from the drinks, thrifted dishes and napkins and pops of warmth from the butternut squash, wooden bowl and salad forks and little decorative accents spread about. The predominantly blue table is given life with pops of yellow and green.

To help give the table a carefree, relaxed vibe, I chose to mix different sets of silverware, plates and napkins. They’ve all got a similar vibe which helps them work together in this setting. Having some matching elements like the placemats grounds all the craziness.

The napkin rings, the bowls, and candle holder are thrift store finds. You’ll never go wrong bringing in second hand elements to a space. Actually, all of the chairs and the table were thrifted too now that I’m thinking about it 🙂

So, where will you be sitting? Pick any seat! It’s yours, friend.

Elephant Salt and Pepper Shakers

If you’re not terribly elaborate with your tablescape decorating, I hope you’ll have found this to be relatable and/or inspiring. The whole set up didn’t cost all that much! And everything can be used again for other occasions and decorating. That’s my favorite way to decorate.

And now for the fun part, continue the round robin and get inspiration from some of the finest designers I’ve ever come across (yeah, I know- it’s crazy I’m amongst this talent, ha!). The next stop goes live tomorrow at 6 am EST and you’ll go to Michael of Inspired By Charm. Enjoy!

If you haven’t seen the tablescape Lindsay from The White Buffalo Styling Co. put together, then you’re not done! Go there now.

A Warm & Cozy Bohemian Home Tour

September 30, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hello and welcome to my home tour! Even with a home mostly torn apart for a dozen or so projects, Fall nesting still has to happen. It’s one of those natural progressions throughout the year. My Fall decorating style is very muted, focusing more on the cozy feeling of a room and little nods to the season sprinkled throughout. I’m excited to share with you a bit what that looks like for me as part of the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours hosted by Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Co. Hopefully you’re stopping in from A Creative Day Blog!

If you’re new here,

Hey, What’s up? Hello! I’m grateful to have you here today. My name is Corinna and I am the designer at home and this is my boho abode. I’m passionate about creating beautiful spaces meant for living in with a lot of bohemian flair. I share my own home’s journey, tips for yours, mood boards with shopping lists, my thrifting adventures and a splash of other interests from my life. I love nature, laughter and creating. After you’ve toured, if you like what you see please follow me on your favorite social media platforms and sign up for email updates!

Let’s tour, shall we?

To set the tone for the tour, light up the Leaves Bath and Body Works candle and tune in to 3 gymnopedies (arr. a. miolin): gymnopedie no. 1. This is what you can expect when you walk into my home on most days. Oh, and my little black and white barking fluff will insist he greet himself and attempt to woo you.

You may notice right away that there’s no entry way. We’re right in the everything space. Last time I did a home tour, I think we had finally pared the number of purposes for this room down to entry way, living, and play space. But then a whole slew of discombobulation started. And it’s back to being the everything space.

eclectic bohemian divided living and dining space

The space is divided into a family gathering/playing/TV watching space and an eating, chatting, working space. There’s a basket for shoes to get kicked off into and a cube divided storage unit full of regularly played with toys and a surface for placing keys onto.

My nod to the season here is the candle you’ve mentally (or literally ;)) lit as you walked in and a small foam pumpkin I pressed brass thumbtacks into for a bit of bling.

eclectic bohemian divided living and dining space

Looking back into the space you’ve just stepped into, you’ll see all of the impromptu dining space I pulled together temporarily. The former dining space and a bedroom are getting flipped. I’ll pop in and explain all of that better next week.

Eating right beside such a bright window is really nice. I pulled in my Craigslist world market bench, peacock fanback chair, small round dining table with brass capped feet, and one of the chairs I had to rebuild a seat for. Beneath sits a woven hemp rug and a Mexican blanket layered for that cozy feeling.

A simple centerpiece works best for our family. It leaves us plenty of space to sit down and have some tea while we catch up. I achieved that neat finish on the lantern with hammered finish copper spray paint with bursts of random gold over the entire lantern. I feel like it adds just the perfect touch of rustic warmth.

I even swapped out my usual teal or navy scarf of the back of the peacock chair for a piece with deeper, richer colors.

As we sit and enjoy our tea, you can let your eyes wander. I’ve carefully chosen and placed every item because I want your eyes to enjoy their visit. I like my guests to wander and ask about the various pieces, feel refreshed with all the greenery, and at home with all the layers.

I’ll invite you to take a load off and relax on the couch with me. By now you’ve probably started to notice a faint secondary smell. Incense. From the other end of the house is a stick of nag champa burning. The two smells blend into a deep, complicated cinnamon, woodsy, musky kind of smell.

In this space, I swapped out some cooler toned textiles for darker, warmer ones. The mid century swivel rocker got wrapped with a  bit of rusty orange fabric and topped with this cute marble pillow. You may start to notice as your eyes wander that there are little pumpkins and gourds spread about. I nod to you Fall. Thank you for your pumpkins and pretty colored leaves.

We can chat, play pentominoes, watch a movie, listen to music or flip through one of my many favorite books to refuel our creativity and spirits.

bohemian cozy and warm fall home tour

My solution for a fireplace-less home? Lots of candles. I can almost convince myself the room is warmer when they’re lit. I know it’s all in my head but I enjoy it nonetheless.

I filled in the gaps of my soda crate rock collection display with more foam gourds.

bohemian cozy and warm fall home tour

I like to keep the bulk of my decor the same year round. I don’t normally overhaul a whole mantle, bar cart or shelves. But I do like to add in fun little surprises. A bit of fun pom pom garland for added texture, a metallic pumpkin in line with my usual trio of bells, and a DIY mercury glass pumpkin in place of the usual brass trunk.

Before you head onto your next stop in this Fall home tour series, here’s a look at the whole space:

If you haven’t yet been there today, make sure you go visit Kristin from Bliss At Home. She’s a seasonal decorating genius and I’m always blown away with her use of colors and finishes to set the mood for a seasonal space. You click visit her Fall Home Tour here.

And please, don’t mind the paint all over the front porch and sidewalk. I would have preferred the opportunity to share my simply Fall decorated front porch. But alas the sweet 4 year old who’s been talking your ear off during your visit put paint all over it all while I prepped lunch 2 days ago. Next time I’ll have a proper porch to share!

What’s On My Rattan Bar Cart

August 25, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Months ago one of my friends alerted me to the fact that the cute rattan line at Target had been put on  clearance. I had been obsessing over it. And I had even been looking on Craigslist for similar bar carts with little luck. So I ran right over to my Target and snatched up one of the bar carts.

Rattan bar cart decorated with vintage bohemian finds

Not exactly a “thrift” score. But I did get it for less than what the ones on Craigslist were listed at.

As for what’s on it? I believe I’ve shared most of these finds with you before. But there is 1 new score that I am totally stoked about.

Vintage atomic style planter with carved wood stand

This brass trunk is the largest version of these I’ve ever seen in person. Not a clue what I’ll store in it, but naturally my hoarding tendencies had to have it.

What’s On My Fireplace Mantle?

August 18, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Blue Fireplace Mantle with plants and warm golden tones

Welcome back to another week of Thrift Score Thursday! This week I’m sharing “What’s On My” fireplace edition.

My fireplace is an old wooden piece I bought through Craigslist and painted “Teal Motif.” I love the funky punch of color it adds to this space.

On it, I have a collection of decor that I’ve thrifted over time. It’s almost a transitional decorated mantle. Not quite fall, but headed in that direction.

Bell Garland Fireplace Screen

June 21, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Colorful bohemian gypsy eclectic fireplace in dining room

Hey, hello!

There’s a monthly challenge that my friend Jess from Domicile 37 hosts every month that invites your favorite bloggers to create a project inspired by the months themed retailer or designer. This month’s themed shop is Urban Outfitters.

Always on top of current decor trends, urban outfitters is a place with really cool pieces- most of which are within the average bears reasonable budget.

But reasonable enough budget isn’t always my and your reality so we’re going to get creative, okay?

Before I share what I created, let’s get into a little “why?”

If you’re new here, you may not have seen my recent faux fireplace project for my dining room. It’s teal and fun and my dreams come true. It’s a focal point in my dining room aservice a fireplace (even faux) should be. But the space below the fireplace has been bugging me.

I don’t have the budget right now to do anything tile related like I’d like to do. And I don’t care for the chalkboard inserts, they’re really cool for the right space but this isn’t the vibe or look for mine. Plus I just did a ton of work doing a wainscoting look in here so I’m wanting to keep that partially visible for a bit (yeah I can see it elsewhere in the room but still). So I really settled on a screen type feature.

I had found this one on Offer Up. It’s like Craigslist in app form if you’re not familiar. But it sold before I could pick it up.

Bell fireplace screen

I really liked the bells and the slight nod to oriental decor that I love. When perusing Urban Outfitters for inspiration, I found the Magical Thinking Klara Hanging Wall Decor, I thought, “Hey, this has bells and has a cool shape. I like it.” And then I thought about it a bit more and decided it would make the perfect simple project to adjust a bit for my preferred location.

So I picked up 2 dozen adorable 2 inch tall bells, found a skein of black embroidery floss, grabbed 2 tacks and a pair of scissors and I was ready to create.

Teal fireplace with hanging bells for faux fireplace screen

Decorating with peacock influence and attempting to add old house charm to a basic brick ranch

DIY home decorating adding missing character like teal fireplace, wainscoting and bell charm

You’ll notice I didn’t use 2 dozen bells here. And that’s because I also recreated the bell garland chime from Urban Outfitters. If you want to see how that turned out, I’m also sharing my front porch alternative and some curb appeal updates today. The bell garland makes an appearance there. 🙂

I hope the idea of using popular retailers gives you some inspiration to take inspiration from their merchandise to create decor for your own home. Creating is therapeutic so it’s sure to be a lot of fun. Please also visit my friends who have shared their own inspired by creations today. Thanks so much for stopping by!

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]
