Design Challenge: Misproportioned Mirrors (and a drexel mirror!)

January 28, 2016 by CORINNA HENDERSON

Hey Guys!

I have a fun #thriftscorethursday post today! In fact, it’s not just a TST post, but also a design challenge post (a series where I share a design challenge I’ve run into and how I’ve resolved it- check out the first one where I chat about metals in our bathroom.). This time I’m chatting about my plans to hang a mirror above the coveted cabinet I was so excited to shave off an extra $65 off of that I wrote a whole blog post about the experience. The design challenge entered when the cabinet arrived and I went to hang the mirror I scored on the curbside 2 weeks ago.

Womp, womp. This mirror is much too big for this cabinet. I was mainly concerned with accessing the doorway to the left since it nearly hits the end of the hallway. I decided 15 inches was the max depth I could squeeze into this space. What I didn’t account for was the width of the mirror I had already planned on putting at the end of the hallway.

So I went back to the drawing board. I had a budget for this hallway makeover. I have already blown the budget and I could not justify spending a single dime on another mirror. I contemplating throwing a rug on the wall above the cabinet but I really needed a mirror to elongate the space visually and reflect light to brighten things up (those are 2 tips from my tips for low light hallways– it’s a good read!)

Thankfully, and I say that loosely, I’m a Craigslist score hoarder. Real bad. I love things that are $20 and less. It’s almost impossible for me to pass up the good stuff for that little. I scored this, I believe to be Drexel, bamboo and brass mirror. It’s pretty cool, right? I’m not sure what’s causing the haze but I love the vibe it brings to this space.

(PS- I’ll have a new camera on Friday, pictures should be much better here on out)

For a smaller cabinet like this one, I think it’s safe to go as small as 1 inch smaller on either side of the mirror (2 inches smaller overall), but for larger cabinets you’ll want to extend that distance the larger your cabinet is to keep proportions visually pleasing and to keep the wall from getting to heavy.

I love the bamboo and brass details of your mirror! I figure it’s pretty safe to hoard things that are under $20 when it always seems to save money down the road, right? 😉

The bamboo mirror is much, much better! Fantastic! I just recommend you change the position of the electrical outlets, They are too visible and unbalance the aesthetic of your corner.

Starting LDN and everything else I’ve tried for CFS so far…

I’ve been taking low dose naltrexone (ldn) for just over a month at this point and I wanted to share an update on how it’s been going thus far. I started taking ldn because I tried everything else in an attempt to feel better. At my last PCP appointment, I told him I’d be trying […]

Checkerboard: The Latest Insta-Trend

You ever first see a trend and think, “nope, not for me.” That was, and still a little, me with the checkerboard trend. I’ve never liked checkerboard walls or floors. At least not enough to semi-permanently put it somewhere in my home. But I am still in pursuit of an interior design certificate and job […]

My best Amazon Prime Purchases Ever

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that it’s time for Amazon’s annual Prime day. And you likely don’t need me to tell you about my best Amazon Prime purchases ever. But I’m telling you, these are such good products and I got them for a steal too!

Celebrating Pride Month With LGBT Businesses

Part of mindful consumerism, for me at least, is intentionally seeking out companies founded and owned by marginalized communities. AAPI Skincare & Beauty Haul & Demo (dry skin, fragrance sensitive)

As my mental health has improved, I’ve enjoyed getting back into my mindfulness consumerism series. With AAPI month upon us, and quickly coming to an end, I took stock of what I needed to purchase and set out to buy replacements from AAPI skincare and beauty brands. I needed face wash, serum, and oil. For […]

Simple Minty Eye Makeup Look (Indigenous Beauty Brands)

As much as I loathe dealing with fallout atop base makeup, I still always start with base makeup. But lucky for me, there’s no powder products going on my eyes today. Despite being a simpler makeup look, there’s still a lot of drama going on. A sharp cat eye winged liner elevates the eyes. And […]

Full Face Latinx Brands

From September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. During this time I wanted to put together a full face of Hispanic owned beauty brands. Here’s My Faves for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is upon us! It’s always my goal to be mindful of where I’m spending my money. During Heritage and Pride months, I try to make an effort to seek out brands that I may not otherwise be aware of. It’s no surprise, what’s out there is truly amazing. And I want to […]
